NBI-HE ITP-UH-08/96 hep-th/ arxv:hep-th/ v2 5 Jun 996 Hgher genus correlators for the hermtan matrx moel wth multple cuts G. Akemann Nels Bohr Insttute Blegamsvej 7, DK-200 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark akemann@nb.k an Insttut für Theoretsche Physk, Unverstät Hannover Appelstraße 2, 3067 Hannover, Germany akemann@tp.un-hannover.e Abstract An teratve scheme s set up for solvng the loop equaton of the hermtan one-matrx moel wth a mult-cut structure. Explct results are presente for genus one for an arbtrary but fnte number of cuts. Due to the complcate form of the bounary contons, the loop correlators now contan ellptc ntegrals. Ths emonstrates the exstence of new unversalty classes for the hermtan matrx moel. The two-cut soluton s nvestgate n more etal, nclung the ouble-scalng lmt. It s shown, that n specal cases t ffers from the known contnuum soluton wth one cut.
Introucton The stuy of mult-cut solutons of matrx moels s nterestng for several reasons. Frst of all t completes the perturbatve analyss aroun N =, exhaustng the full parameter space of the couplng constants for all possble kns of solutons. Ths s mportant n orer to tell, whether there exst fferent types of phase transtons, unversalty classes or contnuum lmts than the ones, whch are alreay known for the one-cut soluton of the moel. Seconly there may be applcatons apart from quantum gravty to two mensonal QCD or statstcal physcs. Results of ranom matrx theory are use for example n the stuy of the spectrum of the QCD nspre scretse Drac operator. The mergng of several cuts nto a one-cut soluton of a complex matrx moel wth temperature woul be of nterest there n varous lmts [] an references theren. In ths paper the approach of teratvely solvng the loop equaton for the hermtan one-matrx moel [2] s chosen an generalse to an arbtrary but fnte number of cuts. The success of ths metho s base on a nonperturbatve treatment n the couplng constants, whch s val for an arbtrary polynomal potental. Even away from the ouble scalng lmt hgher orers n the genus expanson can be obtane explctly. The valty for an arbtrary potental makes t possble to rea off mmeately, whether the results are unversal or not. Here ths wll lea to a whole set of new unversalty classes for the planar two-pont functon or two-loop correlator. Another reason for choosng the loop equaton technques s that t seems, that the metho of orthogonal polynomals s not applcable to mult-cut solutons n general. Solvng the strng equaton for the norms of the polynomals numercally, nstabltes or a so-calle chaotc behavour has been foun by a varety of authors [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. The regon, where these nstabltes occur, seems to match precsely wth the part of the phase space, where the mult-cut solutons omnate. Ths has been shown for the hermtan moel wth an even sextc potental as an example [4, 8]. So apart from the symmetrc two-cut soluton an some cases of egenerate mnma of the potental, where smooth numercal solutons have been foun [3, 6, 8], an analytc expresson for the orthogonal polynomals even for the planar lmt s stll mssng n the case of a generc mult-cut stuaton. As an example The two-component ansatz for the recurson coeffcents mae n [9], [0] an [] s restrcte to the purely symmetrc case of two cuts. The falure of a more general ansatz for more cuts s stue n [2].
the nonsymmetrc two-cut soluton, whch s presente here most explctly, explores such a regon of chaotc numercal solutons [7]. The paper s ve up nto two parts. In the frst part the teratve scheme for solvng the moel wth s cuts s presente, nclung results for genus one. The secon part s then evote to a more etale stuy of the two-cut soluton, whch also contans an analyss of the ouble-scalng lmt. In secton 2 an 3 the man efntons an the loop equatons for the hermtan moel wth multple cuts are splaye, followng closely the notaton of [2]. The planar soluton s erve n secton 4, nclung the requre bounary contons. Then, n secton 5 the teratve scheme for hgher genera s presente. Specal care has to be taken to the nverson of the loop equaton ue to the zero moes, whch occur for more than one cut. The one-loop correlator of genus one s gven for an arbtrary number of cuts. Turnng to the two-cut soluton, secton 6 contans the full two-pont functon as well as the free energy of genus one. After a short scusson of general propertes n the symmetrc lmt, secton 7 eals wth the fferent possbltes of takng a contnuum lmt, splayng some new results. Secton 8 closes wth a fnal scusson an future prospects. 2 Basc efntons Throughout the paper the same notaton as n [2] s use, whch s resplaye here for completeness. The partton functon of the hermtan one-matrx moel s efne by Z [N, {g }] e N2 F[N,{g }] φ exp N TrV φ, 2. where the ntegraton s over hermtan N N matrces φ. The matrx potental s gven by the followng power seres, g j V φ j φj. 2.2 j= A specfc potental of fnte orer can be nspecte by settng the extra couplngs to zero n the fnal result. In ths way of keepng all the couplng constants g throughout the calculaton, they can be use as sources for expectaton values 2 of the followng type, m F [N, {g }] = g m N Trφm, m N Averages are efne as usual by Qφ = Z φ Qφ exp N TrV φ. 2
Introucng the loop nserton operator p j p j+, 2.4 g j j= the generatng functonal or one-loop average Wp can thus be obtane from the free energy F Wp = N k=0 Trφ k p k+ = Tr N p φ pf + p. 2.5 In the same way all the mult-loop correlators can be erve by applyng p to F or to Wp Wp,...,p n N Tr n 2 p φ Tr p n φ conn = p n p n p F, n Here conn refers to the connecte part. As the loop correlators an the free energy have the same genus expanson, F = Wp,...,p n = g=0 g=0 N 2g F g, 2.7 N 2g W gp,...,p n, 2.8 eq. 2.6 s val for each genus g 0 separately. Fnally the asymptotc behavour of Wp for large p can be rea off from the efnton 2.5 lm Wp p ± p. 2.9 The r.h.s. oes not epen on N, so the leang contrbuton clearly comes from the planar part lm W 0p p ± p, lm W gp O p ± p2, g
Usng ths fact the genus expanson of eq. 2.5 reas W g p = pf g, g, 2. so the p-epenence of W g p s completely absorbe n the total ervatve. The last two equatons wll become mportant, when the genus expane loop equaton s nverte, whch etermnes Wp teratvely n genus. 3 The loop equaton The ervaton of the loop equaton for multple cuts can be performe exactly along the same lnes lke for the one-cut case, explotng the nvarance of the partton functon uner a fel reefnton φ φ + ǫ/p φ. The result ffers only by the contour C of the complex ntegral s. fg. C ω V ω 2π p ω Wω = Wp2 + N 2 pwp, p σ, 3. where V ω = j g jω j. In the ervaton t has been assume lke n the one-cut case e.g. n [3], that the ensty ρ N λ N N δλ λ of the egenvalues of the matrces φ has a compact support σ n the vcnty of N =. Here σ conssts of an arbtrary but fxe number s of stnct ntervals s σ [x 2,x 2 ], x > x 2 >... > x 2s. 3.2 = From rewrtng Wp n terms of ρ N λ Wp = λ ρ Nλ p λ, 3.3 t s clear, that when expane at N = Wp has s cuts along the real axs on σ an s analytc elsewhere. Hence the contour C n the loop equaton 3. has to enclose all sngulartes of Wω, but not the pont ω = p. It may now well be stuate between two cuts, n partcular a ouble-scalng lmt can be performe at an nternal ege of a cut s. chap. 7. Insertng the genus expanson eq. 2.8 nto the loop equaton 3. one gets ω V ω 2π p ω W 0ω = W 0 p C 4
p C s C x 2s x 2s x 2 x Fgure : The contour of ntegraton C = s = C for genus zero an ˆK 2W 0 pw g p = g g = W g pw g g p + pw g p, g, for hgher genera, where ˆK s a lnear ntegral operator efne by ˆKfp C 3.5 ω V ω fω π p ω Knowng the result for W 0 p one can etermne W g p for g teratvely from contrbutons of lower genus on the r.h.s. of eq. 3.5, prove that the operator ˆK 2W 0 p can be nverte unquely. 4 The planar soluton The quaratc equaton 3.4 for the planar soluton W 0 p can be solve n the followng way. Deformng the contour n eq. 3.4 to nfnty one gets W 0 p 2 = V ω V ω pw 0 p + C 2π p ω W 0ω. 4. The soluton s then formally gven by W 0 p = 2 V p 2 V p 2 + 4Qp, 5
Qp = C ω V ω 2π p ω W 0ω, 4.2 where the mnus sgn s chosen n orer to fulfll the asymptotc eq Now f t s assume that W 0 p has s cuts n the complex plane, one can make the followng ansatz for the square root, W 0 p = 2 V p Mp 2s = p x. 4.3 Mp s assume to be an analytc functon, whch stll has to be etermne. The sgns of the complex square root are efne by the followng choce, lm p ± 2s = p x p s. 4.4 The analytcty of Mp allows one to wrte t as ω Mω Mp = 2π ω p. 4.5 C Now solvng eq. 4.3 for Mω an pluggng t nto eq. 4.5 yels ω V ω Mp = C 2π 2s, 4.6 ω p = ω x because the W 0 ω-term vanshes ue to ts asymptotc behavour at nfnty ω. When evaluate for a gven potental of fnte egree, Mp wll be a polynomal of egree s. Therefore the maxmal possble number of cuts has to be s max 3. Rensertng the soluton for Mp nto eq. 4.3 an eformng back the contour leas to the fnal result, the planar one-loop correlator wth an s-cut structure, W 0 p = ω V ω 2s p x C 2π p ω ω x From ths result the planar egenvalue ensty ρλ lm N ρ N λ can be recovere, takng the lmt N of eq. 3.3 ρλ = 2π lm W 0 λ ǫ W 0 λ + ǫ ǫ 0 = 2π Mλ 2s λ x, λ σ. 4.8 = 3 It can be shown, that even s max hols. 2 = 6
Equvalently ρλ coul have been obtane from the sale pont equaton for the partton functon n terms of the egenvalues see for example n [2]. Here the soluton takes a close form for an arbtrary number of cuts s. In the planar soluton for W 0 p eq. 4.7 the eges of the cuts x, =,...,2s, stll have to be etermne as functons of the couplng constants g, N +. These bounary contons are erve by explotng agan the asymptotc behavour of W 0 p p. All the coeffcents n eq. 4.7 of the orer p s own to p 0 must vansh, whereas the p -coeffcent must equal unty, δ k,s = 2 C ω 2π ω k V ω 2s = ω x, k = 0,...,s. 4.9 These contons prove only s + equatons for the 2s constants x. Ths s suffcent f an only f s =. For s 2 the remanng equatons are gven by a crteron of stablty aganst tunnellng of egenvalues between fferent cuts n the lmt N [4]. Stablty s acheve by mposng equalty of the chemcal potentals of all cuts n the sale pont equaton for the ensty ρλ. These contons can be most sutably wrtten n the form [5] 0 = x 2k x 2k+ λ Mλ 2s = λ x, k =,...,s, 4.0 where the ntegraton s performe between each two neghbourng cuts. Ths secon type of bounary conton for s 2 leas to the appearance of ellptc ntegrals n the hgher genus correlators as well as n the planar mult-loop correlators. 5 The teratve proceure After havng solve the planar part of Wp as a startng pont, hgher genus contrbutons can now be teratvely etermne by nvertng the genus expane loop equaton 3.5. From W g p all mult-loop correlators of the same genus can be obtane then by smply applyng the loop nserton operator p to t see eq. 2.6 an 2.5. Along the same lnes lke n the one-cut soluton [2] a change of varables from couplng constants to moments wll allow to express the hgher genus correlators nonperturbatvely n M k 7
the couplng constants g, epenng then only on a fnte number of these moments, wth M k φ k ω C ω 2π V ωφ k ω, k N +, =,...,2s, 5. ω x k φ0 ω, φ 0 ω 2s. 5.2 = ω x Deformng the contour to nfnty an expanng φ k ω the moments can be seen to epen n the followng way on the couplngs, M k 2s = g k+s + g k+s+ x j 2 + kδ j j= Here an explct epenence on the number of cuts s enters. The moments may also be use to characterse mult-crtcal ponts. Namely because of M k = k! the m-th mult-crtcal pont at x s gven by k λ k Mλ λ=x, 5.4 M k = 0, k =,...,m, M m 0, 5.5 whch ncates that the egenvalue ensty ρλ n eq. 4.8 accumulates m extra zeros at x. Seconly t can be seen from eqs. 5.4 an 4.3, that the planar oneloop correlator epens on all moments, when Mλ s expane n a Taylor seres. Ths s a specal feature of genus g = 0 only. 5. Determnaton of the bass In orer to procee t s necessary to ntrouce a bass for the operator actng on W g p n eq. 3.5, ˆK 2W 0 p χ n p p x n, n N +, =,...,2s
Gven that the r.h.s. of eq. 3.5 s a fractonal ratonal functon of p havng poles at the x only, W g p wll then have the followng structure W g p = 3g 2s n= = A n,g χn p, g. 5.7 The A n,g are complcate functons of the x an the moments M k. As the orer of the hghest pole n W g p s not change by assumng a mult-cut structure, W g p wll epen on at most 2s3g moments, followng the same arguments lke n the one-cut soluton [2]. A set of bass functons fulfllng eq. 5.6 s efne by χ n p M φ n p n k= M n k+ χ k p, n N +, =,...,2s, 5.8 whch can be proven by nucton. However, ths efnton s not unque, as the kernel of ˆK 2W 0 p s not empty, Ker ˆK 2W 0 p = Span{p l φ 0 p; l = 0,...,s}. 5.9 Ths can be shown by usng the bounary contons of the frst type eq Now because of the asymptotc behavour eq. 2.0 only terms O at large p may be ae to W p 2 g p for g. Ths requrement reuces the set of zero moes to be allowe zero moes : {p l φ 0 p; l = 0,...,s 2}. 5.0 In partcular for the one-cut soluton ths argument exclue any zero moe to be ae, makng the efnton of the bass n eq. 5.8 unque. In the general case any lnear combnaton of the s functons can n prncple be ae to W g p for a soluton wth s cuts. In aton to ts asymptotc W g p has to fulfll eq. 2., whch can be use to fx the bass unquely. It says that the p-epenence of W g p must be completely absorbable nto ervatves wth respect to only be possble, f the bass functons χ n Mk p an p. Ths wll p may be expresse completely n terms of x p as functons of p. So the χn p n eq. 5.8 must be reefne n orer to acheve ths, whch wll precsely fx ts zero moe content. The ervatves of the x an the moments M k can be obtane by applyng the loop nserton operator p to the efntons 9
5. an to the bounary contons, when rewrtng t n the followng way: 2s p = V p + V p Usng the entty j= = x p + x 2s = k= M k p M k j p j+ g j. 5. V pv ω = the result for the moments reas M k p = k s j= j 2s j= j M k+ k l= x p ω 2, 5.2 p φk+ p x j x k l+ φ l x j x k M j x j p M l p φ j p, x j p =,...,2s, k N The quanttes x p are gven by the soluton of the followng set of lnear equatons, 0 = 0 = 2s = 2s = K,j x k M M x x 2j x 2j+ λ x p pk φ p + 2k p k φ 0 p, k = 0,...,s, p φ p K,j, j =,...,s, 2s k= λ x k λ x, 5.4 where p has been apple to eqs. 4.9 an 4.0. The result of the latter s erve n appenx A, where some care has to be taken to the nterchangng of p an eformng the contour n eq. 4.6 for Mλ to, 0
nfnty. It can easly be seen from the lnear system of equatons 5.4, that the soluton wll always take the form M x p = φ p + s 2 l=0 α,l p l φ 0 p, =,...,2s. 5.5 The α,l, =,...,2s, l = 0,...,s 2, wll then be etermne by the followng set of equatons: 0 = 0 = 2s s 2 = l=0 2s s 2 = l=0 α,l x k p l 2s k = l=0 x k l p l + 2k p k, k = 0,...,s, α,l K,j p l, j =,...,s. 5.6 Comparng the coeffcents n powers 4 of p l, l = 0,...,,s 2, leas to 2ss equatons for the α,l. They wll only epen on the x an K,j. Hence the only fference between the x p n eq. 5.5 an the respectve quanttes n the one-cut soluton [2] s the occurrence of a lnear combnaton of the allowe zero moes from eq More explct results for s = 2 are gven n the next chapter. Now all necessary ngreents for reefnng the bass 5.8 n terms of total ervatves are collecte. Solvng eq. 5.3 for φ k+ p an expressng ts p-epenence as p-terms plus zero moes, a unque bass can now be obtane nuctvely from eq. 5.8 by subtractng these corresponng zero moes: χ n p p M n k+ χ k p, M φ n The frst bass functons then rea χ n part k= =,...,2s, n N p = x p, =,...,2s, p = 2 pln M 2s 3 3 χ 2 4 The coeffcent of p k s zero for k = s. j= j pln x x j. 5.8
5.2 Calculaton of genus Havng etermne the bass, the loop equaton can now be nverte step by step n genus. For genus g = eq. 3.5 reas ˆK 2W 0 pw p = pw 0p. 5.9 Usng the result for W 0 p eq. 4.7 an the loop nserton operator from eq. 5. the r.h.s. s gven by pw 0p = 3 6 = 2s = + 4 φ 0 p s = p x 2 8 2s p x 2 8 2s s 2 = l=0 2s,j= <j,j= <j p x p x j M x p x = p 2s x x j p x p x j α,l x l p x Here the fact has been use, that all the regular parts comng from pl p x, l =,...,s 2, wll vansh ue to eq. 5.6, such that W 0 p,p = pw 0p fulfls ts correct asymptotc. The two-loop correlator at fferent arguments W 0 p,q can be obtane n the same way, whch s erve n appenx B. The result for the one-loop correlator of genus one wth s cuts can now easly be obtane by usng the bass eq. 5.8, W p = s = χ 2 p 8 2s s 2 = l=0 2s,j= <j χ p χ j p x x j α,l x l χ p. 5.2 The ntegraton of W p n orer to get F as well as the calculaton of hgher genera gets techncally very much nvolve, as the ntegrals K,j then have to be ntegrate or fferentate wth respect to the x, =,...,2s. For the case of two cuts, the ntegrals K,, =,...,4, can be expresse by the well known complete ellptc ntegrals of the frst, secon an thr 2
kn, makng a more etale analyss possble. Ths wll be the subject of the next chapter. 6 The two-cut soluton The case of two cuts may alreay appear for the symmetrc quartc potental, when the couplng constants are sutably chosen [6]. The approach presente here allows for a close treatment of an arbtrary polynomal potental nclung hgher genus contrbutons. It s beyon the scope of the metho of orthogonal polynomals, as t has been mentone alreay n the ntroucton. The explct soluton for the zero moe coeffcents α,0 n eq. 5.5 wll allow to nspect the planar two-loop correlator n more etal. Knowng the complete x -epenence of these coeffcents makes t also possble to stuy the ouble-scalng lmt. The set of equatons 5.6 reas for s = 2 0 = 0 = 0 = 0 = 4 α = 4 α x 2 = 4 α x 2 x = 4 = α K, 6. where α α,0 an K x 2 x 3 λ 4j= λ x j λ x, =,..., The soluton for the ntegrals K n terms of complete ellptc ntegrals may be taken from [7], the result beng splaye n appenx C. The soluton of the eqs. 6. reas M x p = φ p + α φ 0 p, =,...,4, 6.3 3
where the α can be foun after a teous calculaton to be α = + x 2 x 4 Ek, x x 4 x x 2 Kk α 2 = + x x 3 Ek, x 2 x 3 x 2 x Kk α 3 = + x 2 x 4 Ek, x 3 x 2 x 4 x 3 Kk α 4 = + x x 3 Ek, x 4 x x 3 x 4 Kk k 2 = x x 4 x 2 x 3 x x 3 x 2 x Havng the explct result for the x p at han, the planar two-loop correlator can be evaluate also for fferent arguments most explctly. It s erve n appenx B, whch reas p x p x 4 q x 2 q x 3 W 0 p,q = 4p q 2 p x 2 p x 3 q x q x 4 p x2 p x 3 q x q x 4 + p x p x 4 q x 2 q x Ek 4j= p x j q x j Kk f{x } 2p q The functon f{x } of the x s gven n eq. B.6. The result fulfls ts requre analytcty propertes see appenx B. As t must be regular at concng arguments, t has to be compare wth eq for the two-cut soluton, whch can also be foun n appenx B, W 0 p,p = = 4 <j p x p x p x 4 + p x 2 p x 3 p x p x j + Ek 4 4j= p x j Kk f{x }. 6.6 These results for the planar two-loop correlator are clearly unversal, as they epen on the couplng constants only mplctly va the enponts of the cuts. The part proportonal to the ellptc ntegrals smplfes conserably 4
n the lmt of a symmetrc potental, where x 4 = x an x 3 = x 2. The moulus wll then be ksym 2 4x x 2 = x + x 2 2, 6.7 an the functon f{x } becomes 6. Results for genus g = f sym {x } = x + x Wth the more explct results for the two-cut soluton at han the free energy F can now be ntegrate from W p. As t has been mentone alreay the knowlege of F n not necessary to get the hgher orers of W g p though. Insertng the bass functons eq. 5.8 nto eq. 5.2 W p reas W p = = 4 = pln M 6 <j pln x x j x α p. 6.9 Usng the well known relaton for the ntegral Kk, k 2Kk = 2k 2 k 2 Ek k 2 Kk, 6.0 the followng helpful relaton can be erve, 2 4 pln Kk = x α p + pln x x 3 + pln x 2 x 4. = 6. The free energy F now can be rea off easly from eq. 2., W p = pf, F = = ln M 2 ln Kk 6 ln x x 3 + ln x 2 x 4 ln x x j <j
Takng the symmetrc lmt 5, the result looks very smlar to the free energy of genus one of the On-moel for n = +2 [8]. The calculaton of hgher genera may now be performe by computer algebra, usng eq Takng the ervatve p, all quanttes can expresse algebracally by the known expressons for the x p an Kk an Ek, usng eq. 6.0 an a smlar expresson for Ek. The partcular case of havng two cuts allows for a certan check of the one-loop correlator, whch s val for all genera. If one s takng the symmetrc lmt at the en of the calculaton, whch s mplemente by settng the o couplng constants g 2+, N, to zero, all the o powers of expectaton values of matrces wll vansh, Mk p, Trφ 2k+ sym = 0 k N. 6.3 Consequently Wp wll become an o functon n p, W sym p = Tr N p φ = p + N sym = N k=0 Trφ 2k sym p 2k+ 6.4 Trφ 2 sym p In partcular the term O wll sappear for all genera. Now the only p 2 functon of p contane n the bass wth ths asymptotc behavour 6 s the zero moe φ 0 p. Hence t s not contrbutng to the symmetrc one-loop correlator Wg sym p for all genera. Usng ths specal property the result for W p can be checke n ths lmt. Extractng the φ 0 p-epenence from eqs. 6.9 an 6. t can be shown, that ts coeffcent nee vanshes n the symmetrc lmt. 5 The moments wll then behave lke M n 4 = n M n, M n 3 = n M n 2. 6 For s 3 there wll always be zero moes left wth an asymptotc O. p 3 6
7 The ouble-scalng lmt of the two-cut soluton It has been argue that n the ouble-scalng lmt.s.l. all the multcut solutons shoul be equvalent to the one-cut soluton for the followng reason. Ajustng the couplng constants to acheve a mult-crtcal behavour at one of the eges of the cuts, say at x j, the.s.l. magnfes the accumulaton of zeros at x j such that the structure elsewhere can be neglecte. However, ths argument s only true, f the cuts o not touch or vansh at the same tme. The gven soluton wth two cuts therefore supples an example, where ths can be checke explctly. It wll be verfe, that the generc.s.l. at any x j s equvalent to the.s.l. of the one-cut soluton [2]. But f the scalng lmt s taken at a cut, whch smultaneously shrnks to zero, or merges wth the other cut, or both, a fferent contnuum behavour wll turn out. 7. Scalng lmt at x j In the generc case the.s.l. s performe at one specfc ege of the cuts x j, where for the m-th mult-crtcal pont m extra zeros accumulate n the egenvalue ensty eq Fxng the couplng constants approprately to reach ths pont, p an x j wll scale n the followng way x j = x c j aλ m p = x c j + aπ, 7. whereas the x j are kept fxe. For an m-th mult-crtcal pont the moments scale accorng to M k j a m k, k =,...,m, 7.2 where agan the M k j o not scale. Lookng at the explct soluton for the frst bass functon, whch s gven by eqs. 6.3 an 6.4, t s clear, that the zero moe contrbuton wll be sub-omnant n the scalng lmt eq. 7., x j p = M j The ervatves of the moments take the form M k j p = k + 2 M k+ j φ j p.s.l x j p φk+ j p,
φ k+ j p = p x j k+ p xj j xc j x.s.l Lookng at the nuctve constructon of the bass eq. 5.7 t s obvous then, that the zero moes wll be also sub-omnant for the rest of the bass, whch s hence gven by χ n j p M j φ n j p n k= M n k+ j χ k j p, n N +.s.l. a m n Consequently n the scalng lmt eq. 7. the bass for the poles at x j precsely looks lke the one for the one-cut case at x = x j [2]. The other bass functons, whch are sub-omnant a 2, wll not be neee, as only contrbutons from poles at x j are omnant. The complete equvalence to the one-cut soluton n the.s.l. wll now be shown by lookng at the startng pont of the teraton W 0 p,p an at the scale loop nserton operator. It s easy to see from eq. 5.20, that the leang part n orers of a wll be W 0 p,p = 6 p x j 2.s.l., 7.6 whch s the same lke n the one-cut soluton. The scale p from eq. 5. wll take the form p = x j p x j + k= M k j p M k j.s.l., 7.7 where x j p are gven by eq. 7.3 an eq. 7.4 respectvely. Hence the generc.s.l. of the two-cut soluton precsely maps to the.s.l. of the one-cut soluton n [2], when the quanttes c an M k there are replace by c j xc j x an M k respectvely here. However, one has to bare Mk j p an j n mn, that n ths symbolcal equvalence of the respectve formulas the moments wll explctly epen on the number of cuts as functons of the couplngs see eq In reference [2] explct results up to an nclung genus g = 4 are presente n the.s.l., whch are val here as well. The analyss concernng the possble kns of combnatons of moments, that can appear n eq. 5.7, also apples here. 8
7.2 Mergng an shrnkng cuts n the.s.l. A fferent scalng behavour may be expecte, when the.s.l. s performe at a pont, where the two cuts merge, or one of them shrnks to zero, or both happens together. When the case of mergng s consere, t has to be taken nto account, that extra zeros of Mp lyng between the cuts wll be pcke up n ths lmt 7. Ths wll yet only affect the orer of mult-crtcalty, but not the scalng behavour of the zero moes. The outcome of the analyss wll be, that n the.s.l. at ether mergng or shrnkng cuts the zero moe contrbutons wll stay sub-omnant, although becomng sngular n the latter case. Nevertheless the contnuum results wll change n all cases, as n eq more terms wll contrbute. When the shrnkng an mergng of the cuts s consere smultaneously, say x 2,x 4 x 3, even the zero moes wll be enhance such that they contrbute n the.s.l., leang to another fferent contnuum theory. Frst the stuaton of the two cuts mergng s consere n the lmt x 2 x 3, whch can be parametrse by x 2 = x c 3 + aν, ν > 0, x 3 = x c 3 aµ, µ > 0, p = x c 3 + aπ, 7.8 as at the crtcal pont p x 3 wll also scale. Lookng at the explct results eq. 6.4 for the zero moes, the moulus k 2 wll be of the orer a, k 2 x x 4 = aν + µ x x c 3 xc 3 x 4 + Oa So the ellptc ntegrals can be expane n k 2, whch reas Ek Kk = 2 k2 + Oa The scalng behavour n α 2 an α 3 comng from the factor x 2 x 3 wll thus be cancelle, leavng them sub-omnant as n the generc case, α = x x c 3, 7 From analytcty propertes an the postvty of the egenvalue ensty t follows [9], that Mp wll always have at least one real zero between two ajacent cuts for arbtrary s. 9
α 2 = α 3 = α 4 = x c 3 x x x 4 2 x c 3 x, 4 x c 3 x x x x x c 3, x 4 x c The coeffcents α an α 4 are regular n the lmt eq. 7.8 anyway. The result for the x p, = 2,3, wll therefore be the same lke n eq Stll, the contnuum lmt s altere, as n eq. 5.3 more terms wll survve now n comparson to eq. 7.4 n the generc case, M k 2 p = k + k+ M k l= 2 M 2 x 3 x 2 k l+ φ 2 p φk+ 2 p φ l 2 Ml 2 p M 3, φ 3 p, 7.2 an the same for the nces 3 an 2 nterchange. The.s.l. performe at the nteror of the two cuts mergng therefore leas to a new contnuum lmt of the theory. The startng pont for the teratve soluton n the scalng lmt reas W 0 p,p = 6 p x x 2 x 3 p x 2 p x 3 =2,3 Usng eqs. 7.3 an 7.2 to obtan the ouble-scale bass, the genus one result can easly be acheve. Secon, the case of the scalng lmt s consere, whch s performe at a cut smultaneously shrnkng to zero, say x 4 x 3. It s convenently parametrse by x 3 = x c 3 + aν, ν > 0, x 4 = x c 3 aµ, µ > 0, p = x c 3 + aπ, 7.4 where the other possble case x 2 x can be obtane by nterchangng the nces 4 an 3 2 everywhere. The moulus k 2 wll reach unty n the lmt 7.4, where the ntegral of the frst kn Kk becomes sngular. The 20
ntegrals n eq. 6.4 can now be expane n terms of the complementary moulus k 2, k 2 k 2 = aν + µ x 2 x c 3 Consequently the factor Ek Kk x x c 3 vanshes logarthmcally, + Oa Ek Kk + Oaln a. 7.6 ln a Ths agan spols the possble omnance of the zero moes, the result reang α 3,α 4 α = α 2 = x x c, 3 x 2 x c, 3 aln a. 7.7 So although becomng sngular n the lmt 7.4 the zero moe contrbutons wll stll be sub-omnant n the bass eq The consequences for the teratve proceure n the.s.l. are the same lke for the mergng cuts, where n eqs. 7.2 an 7.3 the nex 2 has to be replace by 4. An even fferent kn of contnuum lmt can be foun, when the process of mergng an shrnkng s put together. In ths lmt the zero moe contrbutons n the bass wll no longer be sub-omnant. Startng wth the followng parametrsaton, the moulus an also the rato Ek Kk x 2 = x c 3 + aν, ν > 0, x 3 = x c 3 x 4 = x c 3 aµ, µ > 0, p = x c 3 + aπ, 7.8 k 2 = wll stay fnte, ν + Oa. 7.9 ν + µ 2
The moulus may thus reach any value n 0,. For the specal choce ν = µ, t hols that k 2 = k 2 = 2. The ellptc ntegrals can then be expresse by the gamma functon. Usng Legenre s relaton, whch then reas 2EkKk Kk 2 = π 2, 7.20 an the specal value K 2 = 4 π Γ 4 2, the rato of the ntegrals s gven by E 2 K 2 = 2 + 4π Γ 4 4 The α, = 2,3,4, wll therefore scale n the esre way, α = x x c, 3 α 2 = Ek, aν Kk α 3 = + ν + µ Ek, aν µ Kk α 4 = Ek aµ Kk, ν k2 = ν + µ, 7.22 leavng the form of eq. 6.3 unchange for = 2, 3, 4. In ths kn of.s.l. the teraton merely smplfes, n contrast to the generc case. The only terms to be left out n eq are those wth an nex. Ths ens the short survey of all possble contnuum lmts to be performe n the two-cut soluton. 8 Concluson an outlook The results presente here complete the perturbatve analyss n N of the hermtan one-matrx moel. All possble solutons classfe by the number of cuts are erve n an teratve scheme for hgher genus contrbutons to the loop correlators, whch generalses the results of [2] for the one-cut soluton. Explct expressons were gven for the one-loop correlator of genus zero an one an for the planar two-loop correlator at fferent arguments. The latter s unversal for each number of cuts s, provng a whole set of new unversalty classes. The two-cut soluton was splaye n full etal, nclung the genus one contrbuton to the free energy. When nvestgatng the ouble-scalng lmt, 22
the two-cut soluton was proven to be equvalent to the one-cut soluton n the generc case. However, when takng the contnuum lmt at mergng or shrnkng cuts a fferent behavour was reveale. A canate for ths new contnuum behavour s stll mssng. Up to now n most nvestgatons of matrx moels there has been assume a one-cut structure of the corresponng quanttes. The results gven here shoul make t possble to eal wth mult-cut structures also n other moels, where the loop equaton technques have been apple successfully. Just to name a few examples lke the On-moel [8] or the superegenvalue moel [9], partcularly n the complex matrx moel [20] most explct results shoul be accessble, completng the analyss of [2]. The hope s bese fnng new unversalty classes an contnuum lmts there as well the appearance of new types of crtcal behavour, whch mght stll be hen n the full space of solutons. Acknowlegements: I woul lke to thank the Nels Bohr Insttute for fnancal support an ts warm hosptalty, where part of ths work was beng one. In partcular I wsh to thank J. Ambjørn, C. Krstjansen an Yu. When applyng p to Mλ n the ntegran, the resultng functon wll no longer be analytc, havng an extra pole at p. Therefore two thngs have to be taken nto account. Frst, the contour n the expresson for Mλ eq. 4.6 cannot be eforme to nfnty but n the en of the calculaton 8, takng t to enclose the poles of the ntegran only, Mλ = ω C C λ 2π ω λ V ω 2s = ω x.
