Tel: , fax: aress: polito@nestor.uniroma2.it July 15, 2011 Abstract In this paper we introuce the space-fractional Poisson process whose state probabilities p α (t), t> 0, α (0, 1], are governe by the equations(/t)p (t)= λ α (1 B)p α (t), where(1 B)α is the fractional ifference operator foun in the stuy of time series analysis. We explicitly obtain the istributions p α(t), the probability generating functions G α (u, t), which are also expresse as istributions of the minimum of i.i.. uniform ranom variables. The comparison with the time-fractional Poisson process is investigate an finally, we arrive at the more general space-time fractional Poisson process of which we give the explicit istribution. Keywors: Space-fractional Poisson process; Bacwar shift operator; Discrete stable istributions; Stable suborinator; Space-time fractional Poisson process Mathematics Subject Classification: Primary 60G22, 60G55. 1 Introuction Fractional Poisson processes stuie so far have been obtaine either by consiering renewal processes with intertimes between events represente by Mittag Leffler istributions[mainari et al., 2004, Beghin an Orsingher, 2009] or by replacing the time erivative in the equations governing the state probabilities with the fractional erivative in the sense of Caputo. In this paper we introuce a space-fractional Poisson process by means of the fractional ifference operator α =(1 B) α, α (0,1], (1.1) which often appears in the stuy of long memory time series[tsay, 2005]. The operator (1.1) implies a epenence of the state probabilities p α (t) from all probabilities pα j (t), j<. Forα=1we recover the classical homogeneous Poisson process an the state probabilities p (t) epen only on p 1 (t). 1
For the space-fractional Poisson process we obtain the following istribution: p α (t)= Pr{Nα (t)= }= ( 1)! ( λ α t) r r! Γ(αr+ 1), Γ(αr+ 1 ) 0. (1.2) The istribution of the space-fractional Poisson process can be compare with that of the time-fractional Poisson process N ν (t), t> 0,ν (0,1]: Pr{N ν (t)= }= (λtν )! (r+ )! r! ( λt ν ) r, Γ(ν(+ r)+1) 0. (1.3) Forα=ν= 1, from (1.2) an (1.3), we immeiately arrive at the classical istribution of the homogeneous Poisson process. The space-fractional Poisson process has probability generating function an can be compare with its time-fractional counterpart where G α (u, t)=u Nα (t) = e λα (1 u) αt, u 1, (1.4) ν G(u, t)=u N ν(t) = E ν ( λ(1 u)t ν ), u 1, (1.5) E ν (x)= x r, ν> 0, (1.6) Γ(νr+ 1) is the one-parameter Mittag Leffler function. We show below that the probability generating function of the space-time fractional Poisson process reas ν G α (u, t)= E ν ( λ α (1 u) α t ν ), u 1, (1.7) an its istribution has the form p α,ν (t)= ( 1) ( λ α t ν ) r Γ(αr+ 1),! Γ(νr+ 1) Γ(αr+ 1 ) 0,α (0,1],ν (0,1]. (1.8) We also show that the space-fractional Poisson process N α (t) can be regare as a homogeneous Poisson process N(t), suborinate to a positively sewe stable process S α (t) with Laplace transform In other wors, we have the following equality in istribution e zsα (t) = e tzα, z> 0, t> 0. (1.9) N α (t) = N(S α (t)). (1.10) The representation (1.10) is similar to the following representation of the time-fractional Poisson process: N ν (t) = N T 2ν (t), (1.11) where T 2ν (t), t> 0, is a process whose one-imensional istribution is obtaine by foling the solution to the time-fractional iffusion equation[beghin an Orsingher, 2009]. Finally we can note that the probability generating function (1.7), for all u (0,1), can be represente as ν G α (u, t)= Pr min X 1/α 1 u, (1.12) 0 N ν (t) where the X s are i.i.. uniformly istribute ranom variables. 2
2 Construction of the space-fractional Poisson process In this section we escribe the construction of an alternative fractional generalisation of the classical homogeneous Poisson process. First, let us recall some basic properties. Let us call P (t)=pr{n(t)= }= e λt(λt), t> 0,λ>0, 0, (2.1)! the state probabilities of the classical homogeneous Poisson process N(t), t> 0, of parameterλ>0. It is well-nown that the probabilities p (t), 0, solve the Cauchy problems p t (t)= λp (t)+λp 1 (t), 0, >0, (2.2) p (0)= 1, =0. Starting from (2.2), some time-fractional generalisations of the homogeneous Poisson process have been introuce in the literature (see e.g. Lasin[2003], Mainari et al.[2004], Beghin an Orsingher[2009]). These wors are base on the substitution of the integer-orer erivative operator appearing in (2.2) with a fractional-orer erivative operator, such as the Riemann Liouville fractional erivative (as in Lasin [2003]) or the Caputo fractional erivative (as in Beghin an Orsingher[2009]). In this paper instea, we generalise the integer-orer space-ifference operator as follows. First, we rewrite equation (2.2) as p t (t)= λ(1 B)p (t), 0, >0, (2.3) p (0)= 1, =0, where B is the so-calle bacwar shift operator an is such that B(p (t))= p 1 (t) an B r (p (t))= B r 1 (B(p (t)))= p r (t). The fractional ifference operator α =(1 B) α has been wiely use in time series analysis for constructing processes isplaying long memory, such as the autoregressive fractionally integrate moving average process (ARFIMA). For more information on long memory processes an fractional ifferentiation, the reaer can consult Tsay[2005], page 89. Formula (2.3) can now be easily generalise by writing t pα (t)= λα (1 B) α p α (t), α (0,1], 0, > 0, p α (0)= (2.4) 1, = 0, where p α (t), 0, t> 0, represents the state probabilities of a space-fractional homogeneous Poisson process N α (t), t> 0, i.e. p α (t)=pr{nα (t)= }, 0. (2.5) In turn, we have that (2.4) can also be written as t pα (t)= λα Γ(α+1) r!γ(α+1 r) ( 1)r p α r (t), 0, > 0, p α (0)= 1, = 0. α (0,1], (2.6) 3
Note that, in (2.6) we consiere that p α j (t)=0, j. Equation (2.6) can also be written as t pα (t)= λα p α (t)+αλα p α 1 (t) α(α 1) p α 2! 2 (t)+ +( 1)+1 α(α 1)...(α +1) p α! 0 (t), 0, > 0, p α (0)= 1, = 0. (2.7) By applying the reflection property of the gamma functionγ(z)γ(1 z)=π/sin(πz) for z=r α, we have also that t pα (t)= λα p α (t)+αλα p α sin(πα) 1 (t)+λα π r=2 B(α+1, r α)pα r (t), 0, > 0, p α (0)= (2.8) 1, = 0, where the sum is consiere equal to zero when <2 an B(x, y) is the beta function. From (2.7) an (2.8) we see that forα=1 we retrieve equation (2.6) of the homogeneous Poisson process. An example of process whose state probabilities p (t), epen on all p j (t), j<, is the iterate Poisson process Ñ(t)= N 1 (N 2 (t)), where N 1 (t) an N 2 (t) are inepenent homogeneous Poisson processes. The process Ñ(t) is analyse in Orsingher an Polito[2011]. Theorem 2.1. Let N α (t), t> 0, be a space-fractional homogeneous Poisson process of parameterλ>0 an let G α (u, t)=u Nα (t), u 1,α (0,1], be its probability generating function. The Cauchy problem satisfie by G α (u, t) is G t α(u, t)= λ α G α (u, t)(1 u) α, G α (u,0)=1, u 1, (2.9) with solution G α (u, t)= e λα t(1 u) α, u 1, (2.10) that is, the probability generating function of a iscrete stable istribution (see Devroye[1993], page 349). Proof. Starting from (2.6), we have that t G α(u, t)= λ α Γ(α+1) = λ α Γ(α+1) =r =0 = λ α Γ(α+1)G α (u, t) = λ α G α (u, t)(1 u) α, thus obtaining formula (2.9). It immeiately follows that u ( 1) r r!γ(α+1 r) pα r (t) (2.11) u +r ( 1) r r!γ(α+1 r) pα (t) ( 1) r r!γ(α+1 r) G α (u, t)= e λα t(1 u) α, u 1. (2.12) 4
Remar 2.1. Note that, for α = 1, formula (2.10) reuces to the probability generating function of the classical homogeneous Poisson process. Furthermore, from (2.10) we have that[n α (t)] j =, j, α (0,1). Remar 2.2. Let X, = 1,..., be i.i.. Uniform[0,1] ranom variables, then G α (u, t)= e λα t(1 u) α = Pr min X 1/α 1 u, u (0,1), (2.13) 0 N(t) where N(t), t> 0, is a classical homogeneous Poisson process of rateλ α with the assumption that min(x 1/α )= 1 when N(t)=0. Theorem 2.2. The iscrete stable state probabilities of a space-fractional homogeneous Poisson process N α (t), t> 0, can be written as p α (t)=pr{nα (t)= } (2.14) = ( 1) ( λ α t) r Γ(αr+ 1)! r! Γ(αr+ 1 ) = ( 1) (1,α) 1ψ 1! (1,α) λα t, t> 0, 0, where h ψ j (z) is the generalise Wright function (see Kilbas et al.[2006], page 56, formula ( )). Proof. By expaning the probability generating function (2.10) we have that G α (u, t)= e λα t(1 u) α (2.15) [ λ α t(1 u) α ] r = r! ( λ α t) r ( u) m Γ(αr+ 1) = r! Γ(αr+ 1 m) m=0 = u m( 1)m ( λ α t) r Γ(αr+ 1) r! Γ(αr+ 1 m). m=0 From this, formula (2.14) immeiately follows. Remar 2.3. Note that the iscrete stable istribution (2.14) (which for α = 1 reuces to the Poisson istribution) can also be written as p α (t)=( 1)! = ( 1)! ( λ α t) r 0 r! e w Γ(αr+ 1) Γ(αr+ 1 ) ( λ α tw α ) r r!γ(αr+ 1 ). (2.16) Theorem 2.3. Let S γ (t), t> 0,γ (0,1), be aγ-stable suborinator, that is a positively sewe stable process such that e zsγ (t) = e tzγ, z> 0, t> 0, (2.17) 5
an with transition function q γ (s, t). For a space-fractional Poisson process N α (t), t> 0,α (0,1], with rate λ>0, the following representation hols in istribution: N α (S γ (t)) = N αγ (t). (2.18) Proof. In orer to prove the representation (2.18) it is sufficient to observe that 0 G α (u,s)q γ (s, t)s= 0 e λα s(1 u) α q γ (s, t)s=e λαγ t(1 u) αγ. (2.19) Remar 2.4. Note that, whenα=1, formula (2.18) reuces to N(S γ (t)) = N γ (t), (2.20) an this reveals a secon possible way of constructing a space-fractional Poisson process. Consier now the first-passage time at of the space-fractional Poisson process Since Pr{τ α < t}=pr{nα (t) }, we have that τ α (t)=inf{t : Nα (t)= }, 0. (2.21) Pr{τ α < t}= ( 1) m ( λ α t) r Γ(αr+ 1) r! Γ(αr+ 1 m). (2.22) m= Hence Pr{τ α s}= ( 1) m ( λ α ) r t r 1 Γ(αr+ 1) (r 1)! Γ(αr+ 1 m). (2.23) m= r=1 Note that forα=1 we obtain the classical Erlang process. First we have an therefore Pr{τ 1 < t}= ( 1) m Pr{τ 1 s}= λe λt = λe λt m= r=m = e λt (λt) m, m= (λt) m m= (λt) m m= =λe λt(λt) 1 ( 1)!. +λe λt +λe λt ( λt) r (r m)! (λt) m 1 m= m= 1 (m 1)! (λt) m (2.24) (2.25) 6
Remar 2.5. Note that, with a little effort, fractionality can be introuce also in time. In this case, for example, the fractional ifferential equation governing the probability generating function is ν t νν G α (u, t)= λ α ν G α (u, t)(1 u) α, ν G α (u,0)=1, u 1,ν (0,1],α (0,1], (2.26) where ν / t ν is the Caputo fractional erivative operator (see Kilbas et al.[2006]). By means of Laplace transforms, some simple manipulations lea to νg α (u, t)= E ν ( λ α t ν (1 u) α ), u 1, (2.27) where E ν (x) is the Mittag Leffler function[kilbas et al., 2006]. In turn, by expaning the above probability generating function we have that p α,ν (t)= ( 1)! ( λ α t ν ) r Γ(αr+ 1), 0,α (0,1],ν (0,1]. (2.28) Γ(νr+ 1) Γ(αr+ 1 ) When α = 1 these probabilities easily reuce to those of a fractional Poisson process (see Beghin an Orsingher [2009]): p 1,ν (t)=( 1)! ( λt ν ) r Γ(r+ 1) Γ(νr+ 1) Γ(r + 1) = ( 1) ( λt ν ) r r!! Γ(νr+ 1) (r )! r= r (λt ν = ( 1) r ) r Γ(νr+ 1). r= (2.29) Moreover, let X, =1,..., be i.i.. Uniform[0,1] ranom variables an N ν (t), t> 0, be a homogeneous time-fractional Poisson process of rateλ α with the assumption that min(x 1/α )=1when N ν (t)=0. The probability generating function ν G α (u, t), for u (0,1), can be written as νg α (u, t)= E ν ( λ α t ν (1 u) α ) (2.30) = ( 1) r(λα t ν ) r (1 u) αr Γ(νr+ 1) = ( 1) r (λ α t ν ) r r r ( 1) [1 (1 u) α ] Γ(νr+ 1) =0 r (λ α = [1 (1 u) α ] ( 1) r t ν ) r Γ(νr+ 1) =0 r= = Pr X 1/α 1 u Pr Nν (t)= =0 = Pr min X 1/α 1 u. 0 N ν (t) Formula (2.30) shows that the contribution of the space-fractionality affects only the uniform ranom variables while the time-fractionality only the riving process N ν (t).
