31 29 8. CONCLUSION When modelling stochastically trending variables, the usual regression methods need to be modied, in order to guarantee valid inference. The vector autoregressive model allowing for I(1) variables and cointegration has been analysed in detail, and the challenge is to apply it to nonstationary climate data, in order to avoid the fallacies involved in spurious correlation and regression.
