1 Addendum to ARI Standard , Air Terminals September 2002 The September 2002 Addendum to ARI Standard , Air Terminals, is comprised of only the shaded portions shown, which has been incorporated into the already published 1998 version of ARI Standard 880 to avoid confusion. The Addendum addresses a new type of unit, modulating diffuser units, for inclusion in the ARI Standard There are no changes to any of the other type of units in this Addendum. Particular additions (shown shaded in the Standard) are as follows: 1. Add paragraph In paragraph 4.1, add item "i". 3. In paragraph , add the last sentence. 4. Exclusion: This certification program does not apply to the rating and testing of retrofit units. 7 ARI STANDARD AIR TERMILS Section 1. Purpose 1.1 Purpose. The purpose of this standard is to establish for air terminals : definitions and symbols; classifications; requirements for testing and rating; minimum data requirements for Published Ratings; marking and nameplate data; and conformance conditions Intent. This standard is intended for the guidance of the industry, including manufacturers, engineers, installers, contractors and users Review and Amendment. This standard is subject to review and amendment as technology advances. Section 2. Scope 2.1 Scope. This standard applies to air control and distribution devices used in commercial air distribution systems which are ducted air devices and provide control of air volume and/or air temperature by one or more of the following means: a. Fixed or adjustable directional vanes. b. Pressure dependent volume dampers or shutoff valves (including air induction nozzles and dampers). c. Pressure compensated volume dampers or shutoff valves (including air induction nozzles and dampers). d. Heat exchange. e. On/off fan control. f. Variable speed fan control. These devices may or may not have a fan to deliver air into a space. 2.2 Exclusions. This standard does not apply to registers, diffusers and grilles or to products specifically covered by: a. The Air Heating and Cooling Coils Sub-Section of the Air Conditioning Heat Transfer Products Section of ARI. ARI Standard 410. b. The Room Fan-Coil and Air-Induction Units Sub-Section of the Air Conditioning Heat Transfer Products Section of ARI. ARI Standard Definitions. All terms in this document will follow the standard industry definitions in the current edition of ASHRAE Terminology of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration unless otherwise defined in this section. 3.2 Acoustically Isolated. The specimen under test shall have a sound pressure level at least 10 db higher than any extraneous sound sources, such as sound generated from the air supply or duct walls, to insure that the test specimen is the sole contributor to the sound level being measured (see Figure 1). 3.3 Air Primary Air. Air supplied to an air terminal inlet under positive static gage pressure, normally from an air handling unit Secondary Air. Air drawn into an air terminal by means of induction and discharged through the air terminal outlet Standard Air. As defined in ASHRAE Terminology of Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, dry air at 70EF [20EC] and psia [ kpa]. Under these conditions, dry air has a mass density of lb/ft 3 [1.204 kg/m 3 ]. 3.4 Airflow. Unit volume displacement of standard air per unit time. Normally measured in cubic feet per minute (cfm) or cubic meters per second (m 3 /s). The various types of airflow are defined as follows: Design Airflow. The flow of conditioned air through an air terminal required to meet a given heating or cooling design load Rated Airflow. The flow of air through an air terminal at which test or performance data is generated Standard Airflow. Airflow corrected for standard air density. Q s = Q a (ñ a /ñ s ) Induced Airflow. The flow of secondary air into an air terminal resulting from a pressure differential created by the velocity of the flow of primary air through the terminal. Section 3. Definitions and Symbols 1

8 ARI STANDARD Air Terminal (Terminal). A device that modulates the volume of air delivered to a conditioned space in response to a given load (see Figures 2 and 3). The various types of air terminals are: Bypass Terminal. Air terminal that diverts excess primary air to the return Integral Diffuser Terminal. Diffuser with the features of an air terminal Dual Duct Terminal. Air terminal with two supply inlets that is used primarily for mixing cold and warm air streams at varying proportions Induction Terminal. Air terminal that supplies varying proportions of primary and induced air Parallel Flow Fan-Powered Terminal. Air terminal in which primary airflow is modulated in response to the cooling demand and in which the integral fan is operated to deliver induced air Series Flow Fan-Powered Terminal. Air terminal in which the primary airflow is modulated and mixed with induced air by a continuously operated integral fan to provide a relatively constant volume discharge Single-Duct Terminal. Air terminal supplied with one source of primary air Modulating Diffuser Terminal. A diffuser with an integral air terminal. 3.6 Damper. A device used to regulate or modulate the flow of air Inlet Damper. Controls all air flowing into an integral diffuser terminal Outlet Damper. Controls only the air being discharged through the diffuser part of an integral diffuser terminal. 3.7 Equivalent Diameter. Diameter of a circular equivalent of any duct for equal cross-sectional areas. 3.8 Model. An air terminal of the same type with similar characteristics available in a progression of sizes. For fanpowered air terminals, a model is defined by a progression of various inlet dimensions and fan volume capacities. For nonfan-powered air terminals, it is an air terminal of various inlet dimensions. 3.9 Octave Band. Frequency band with an upper band limit that is twice the frequency of the lower band limit. The center frequency of an Octave Band is the geometric mean of its upper and lower band limits. The octave band center frequencies of interest are listed in Table 1: Table 1. A duct static pressure averaging arrangement in which a common tube interconnects at least four evenly-spaced duct wall taps and is connected to a pressure measuring device Pressure. For the purpose of this standard, pressure shall be associated with standard air Minimum Operating Pressure. The static pressure drop through an air terminal at a given airflow, with the damper/valve placed in its full open position Pressure Compensated Control System. Airflow through the air terminal is independent of system pressure Pressure Dependent Control System. Airflow through the air terminal varies in response with system pressure Published Ratings. A statement of the assigned values of those performance characteristics, under stated rating conditions, by which a unit may be chosen to fit its application. These values apply to all units of like nominal size and type (identification) produced by the same manufacturer. As used herein, the term Published Rating" includes the rating of all performance characteristics shown on the unit or published in specifications, advertising or other literature controlled by the manufacturer, at stated rating conditions Standard Rating. A rating based on tests performed at Standard Rating Conditions. 2

9 ARI STANDARD Application Rating. A rating based on tests performed at application rating conditions (other than Standard Rating Conditions) Quiet Air Supply. Condition in which the sound power level introduced in the frequency band of interest by the air supply alone is at least 10 db lower than the measured sound power level generated by the air supply and the air terminal under test Rating Conditions. Any set of operating conditions under which a single level of performance results, and which causes only that level of performance to occur Standard Rating Conditions. Rating conditions used as the basis of comparison for performance characteristics Retrofit Unit. Air terminal intended for installation into existing air distribution systems, and containing little or no sound attenuating materials "Shall," "Should," "Recommended" or "It Is Recommended." "Shall," "should," "recommended" or "it is recommended" shall be interpreted as follows: Shall. Where "shall" or "shall not" is used for a provision, that provision is mandatory if compliance with the standard is claimed Should, Recommended or It Is Recommended. "Should," "recommended" or "it is recommended" is used to indicate provisions which are not mandatory but are desirable as good practice Size. Air terminal characteristics related to the dimensions of the unit Sound Power. In a specified frequency band, the rate at which sound energy is radiated by a noise source, measured in watts Sound Power Level. In a specified frequency band, ten times the common logarithm of the ratio of the sound power radiated by the noise source under test to the standard reference sound power of watt Sound Power-Radiated. Sound power transmitted from an air terminal casing (plus induction port for fanpowered air terminals) Sound Power - Discharge. Sound power transmitted from an air terminal outlet Sound Pressure. In a specified frequency band, a fluctuating pressure superimposed on the static pressure by the presence of sound Sound Pressure Level. In a specified frequency band, 20 times the common logarithm of the ratio of the sound pressure radiated by the noise source under test to the standard reference pressure of 20 micropascals Symbols and Abbreviations. Terminal units falling within the scope of this standard shall be classified as one of the following eight types: a. Single-Duct Central Air Terminals b. Dual Duct Central Air Terminals c. Induction Central Air Terminals d. Bypass Central Air Terminals e. Series Flow, Fan Powered Central Air Terminals f. Parallel Flow, Fan-Powered Central Air Terminals g. Inlet Damper, Integral Diffuser Terminals h. Outlet Damper, Integral Diffuser Terminals i. Modulating Diffuser Terminals Section 5. Test Requirements 5.1 Test Requirements. Air terminals shall be tested in accordance with ASHRAE Standard 130, except as noted below Calibration. Instruments shall be calibrated at least once per year by comparison with a certified standard in the range of use or shall itself have been certified as to accuracy Supply Air Static Pressure Measurement. The static pressure of the air entering the test unit shall be measured by means of a Piezometer ring per Section of ASHRAE Standard Discharge Air Static Pressure Measurement. The static pressure of the air shall be measured at 2.5 duct diameters downstream of the terminal outlet. A piezometer ring shall be used if static pressure traverse measurements are not uniform within 10% Sound Measurement Installation. 4

11 ARI STANDARD Discharge Sound Power Level Determination. To determine discharge sound power level, the air terminal shall be installed in accordance with Figures 9.1 through 9.4 of ASHRAE Standard 130. Alternatively, for integral diffuser air terminals, the discharge sound power level may be determined in accordance with Figure 4. For Modulating Diffuser Terminals, the discharge sound power level shall be determined in accordance with Figures 7 and 8 of ASHRAE Standard Radiated Sound Power Level Determination. The air terminal shall be installed in accordance with Figures 10.1 through 10.3 of ASHRAE Standard 130 to determine radiated sound power level Mounting of Equipment Requiring Support. To achieve isolation, a trapeze type mounting with rubber isolating pads shall be used for all compatible terminals Acoustically Isolated Duct. Recommendations for acoustically isolated ducts, or equivalents, used as inlet and outlet ducts in radiated sound tests are shown in Figures 5 and Dual Duct Air Terminal Test Configuration. Dual duct terminals shall be tested with one valve controlling air flow and one valve fully closed Radiated Sound Power Tests - Series Flow Fan Terminals. The total air flow discharging the test unit shall be measured using an acoustically isolated flow measuring device installed as shown in Figure 6 of ASHRAE Standard 130 (3.5 D e distance to discharge flow measuring device is a minimum value.) Induced Airflow. Induced airflow is calculated by subtracting the primary airflow from the discharge (total) airflow. Primary airflow is measured in accordance with Section 4.4 and discharge (total) airflow is measured in accordance with Section 5.1 of ASHRAE Standard 130. Section 6. Rating Requirements 6.1 Standard Ratings. Standard Ratings shall be established at the Standard Rating Conditions specified in 6.2. All Standard Ratings shall be verified by tests in accordance with Section Values of Standard Ratings. Standard Ratings relating to air flow rates shall be expressed only in cfm [m 3 /s] of Standard Air and stated as follows: Range cfm [m 3 /s] 0 to 49 [0 to 24] 50 to 199 [25 to 99] 200 to 999 [100 to 499] 1000 and over [500 and over] Rated to Nearest 1 cfm [0.5 m 3 /s] 5 cfm [2 m 3 /s] 10 cfm [5 m 3 /s] 25 cfm [10 m 3 /s] Static pressure shall be expressed to the nearest 0.01 in. H 2 O [ kpa]. Discharge and radiated sound power level shall be expressed to the nearest 1 db. Levels below values shown in Table 3 shall be listed as being below significance. The Sound Power Level shall be determined for the octave band center frequencies from 125 to 4000 Hertz. Watts shall be expressed to the nearest 1 watt. 6.2 Standard Rating Conditions Air Flow Rate and Minimum Operating Pressure Primary Damper. The standard rated air flow and minimum operating pressure shall be established and published in accordance with Table Integral Fan. Fan air flow rating shall be established and published at 0.25 in. H 2 O [0.062 kpa] discharge static pressure or minimum recommended pressure (whichever is greater) with any fan volume dampers at wide open position, and primary air valve closed Induction Terminal. The induced airflow shall be rated and published using 0.25 in. H 2 O [0.062 kpa] discharge (downstream) static pressure with the primary air damper set to achieve 25% of the 5

12 ARI STANDARD standard rated airflow and 1.5 in. H 2 O [0.37 kpa] inlet static pressure. The induction damper(s) shall be set in the full open position Sound Power Rating. The sound power level, db, for both discharge and radiated shall be established and published at the Standard Rating Conditions (see Table 5). Octave Band Center Frequencies, Hz Rating Tolerance db Application Ratings. Data at conditions other than those specified in 6.2 may be published as application ratings, and shall be determined in accordance with the method of testing described in Section Appurtenance Ratings. The terminal data referred to in 6.2 represent the performance of the base terminal without appurtenances. Thus, as appurtenances such as reheat coils, filters, multiple outlet connectors, etc. are added to the terminal, their effects must be taken into account in order to establish the overall performance of the combined terminal. 6.5 Publication of Ratings. Wherever application ratings are published or printed, they shall include or be accompanied by the Standard Rating, clearly designated as such, including a statement of the conditions at which the ratings apply. 6.6 Tolerances. To comply with this standard, published ratings shall be based on data obtained in accordance with the provisions of Sections 5 and 6 of this standard, and shall be such that any production terminal, when tested, will meet these ratings within the following tolerances: Air flow shall be greater than or equal to 95% of the rating at the published minimum operating pressure requirement For fan powered terminals, air flow shall be greater than or equal to 95% of the rating at the published minimum operating pressure and the electrical power input shall not be more than 110% of the rated value. For induction terminals, the induced airflow shall be greater than or equal to 95% of the rating Sound Power levels shall not exceed the published values in each octave band by more than the rating tolerance shown following: Section 7. Minimum Data Requirements for Published Ratings 7.1 Minimum Data Requirements for Published Ratings. Published ratings shall include Standard Ratings and may also include application ratings. The following information shall be published for all Standard Ratings. a. A listing of all applicable rating conditions specified. b. Primary air flow rate, cfm [m 3 /s] c. Induced or fan air flow rate, cfm [m 3 /s] d. Minimum operating pressure, in. H 2 O [kpa] e. Octave band sound power level, db (125 to 4000 Hz) f. Electrical power input at fan rating point, W (fan-powered terminals only) Section 8. Marking and Nameplate Data 8.1 Marking and Nameplate Data. Recommended nameplate voltages for 60 Hertz systems shall include one or more of the equipment nameplate voltage ratings shown in Table 1 of ARI Standard 110. Recommended nameplate voltages for 50 Hertz systems shall include one or more of the utilization voltages shown in Table 1 of IEC Standard Publication Model Identification. The label on each air terminal unit shall include sufficient model and size identification to correlate with published data, literature and any other advertising issued by the manufacturer. Section 9. Voluntary Conformance 9.1 Conformance. While conformance with this standard is voluntary, conformance shall not be claimed or implied for products or equipment within its Purpose (Section 1) and Scope (Section 2) unless such claims meet all of the requirements of the standard. 6

For Series Flow Fan-Powered Terminals, the rated air flow cfm [m 3 /s] for the primary air valve shall be the lower of the fan rating flow or the rated air flow according to the above table. Integral Diffuser Terminals and Bypass Terminals shall be rated at the manufacturer's recommended air flow. Modulating Diffuser Terminals shall be rated at 750 fpm [3.8 m/s] and 400 fpm [2.0 m/s] neck velocity. 7
