3 9. General constructon Due to ts mode of operaton, a worm gearbox enables hgh step-down ratos. In worm, both shafts ntersect n a defned dstance (A). Ths centre-to-centre dstance s reflected n the specfcaton of the gearbox sze. (Example: S 00 centre-to-centre dstance 00 mm) 9.. Toothng A gear set conssts of worm shaft and worm gear. The worm shaft made of carbursed steel s hardened, the toothng s ground. The worm gear conssts of a hgh-qualty bronze alloy, the toothng s mlled. 9.. Constructon types Due to the modular system, dfferent gearbox constructon types can be confgured. The varants dffer n the type of the shafts, the rotatonal drecton of the shafts, and the support by bearngs. 9.. Threaded mountng holes The housng surface on the sde and the flange surfaces on the sdes and are machned and may be used as mountng surfaces. All flanges always have threaded mountng holes. You have the followng avalable orderng optons: Gearbox sze Orderng optons Threaded mountng holes are n the housng surfaces on the gearbox sde Threaded mountng holes are n the flanges on the gearbox sde 00-0, 00-00,, 00-00,, 00-00,, 00-00,, 00-00,, -0,, The standard verson has the order code. Please enqure other mountng optons. Table Installaton poston The nstallaton poston s defned by the gearbox sde drected downwards durng operaton and wll be ndcated by the assocated numeral. The can be used n all nstallaton postons. The techncally most favourable and thus recommended nstallaton poston s the nstallaton poston. In ths poston, the worm shaft s horzontal and located at the bottom. Please contact us for consultaton f the angle of the gearbox sde drected downwards devates more than from the horzontal poston. The performance data and torques lsted n the selecton tables are only vald f the are used n the nstallaton postons, or. The values must be reduced by 0%, f the worm shaft s vertcal or located at the top (nstallaton poston, or ). 9.. Shaft desgnaton allocaton to the gearbox sdes The worm shaft s the fast-rotatng shaft. It has the speed n and s dentfed by N. The slowly rotatng shaft has the speed n and s dentfed by N. The worm gear s located on ths shaft. The gearbox sdes are dentfed by the numerals to. For the allocaton of the shafts to the gearbox sdes, please refer to the Fgure 8.. and the Fgure.. Gearbox sdes. n N A N n N n n Fgure

4 9 9.. Rotatonal drecton and gear rato As standard, the worm are delvered wth rght-handed worm shafts. Ths results n rotatonal drectons accordng to Fgure In the specal desgn, delvery wth left-handed gear teeth s also possble. Please enqure ths. Please refer to the performance tables for the possble gear ratos. Prncpally, the actual gear rato st must be taken nto account for the layout. In some cases, ths devates from the nomnal gear rato Effcency The achevable effcency depends on rotatonal speed, torque, nstallaton poston, sealng, and lubrcant type. Startng effcency The effcency s always lower durng the startng phase and n the cold operatng state snce the lubrcatng flm s not formed untl the sldng moton has started. Therefore a hgher torque s needed. The startng effcences lsted below are gudance values and vald for run-n. These startng effcences must be taken nto account for the layout. Number of threads Gear rato range Startng effcency Ptch Table Operatng effcency The tooth flanks of worm n the as-delvered condton are not yet fully smoothed. Therefore the should be run n wth approx. 0% of the nomnal data, f possble, before they are operated under load. The effcences specfed n the performance tables relate to the permssble nomnal data and are gudance values for run-n wth standard sealng that have operatng temperature, and an ol vscosty of 0 mm /s. Step-up drve Due to the hgh effcency of the ATEK worm gear sets t s possble to drve the wth -thread and -thread worm shafts also from the worm gear sde and thus to generate a steppng-up. The effcency wth a drvng worm gear s calculated by the formula: η = ( / η ) Self-lockng The self-lockng s drectly related to the effcency of the gearbox. Please refer to chapter 9.. Self-lockng for more nformaton Lubrcaton Dfferent condtons for the lubrcaton of the toothng and the roller bearngs wll arse dependng on gearbox sze, nstallaton poston, rotatonal speed and on-perod. In order to ensure these optmally, dfferent ol quanttes and vscostes are used. These wll be defned by ATEK based on your orderng detals (rotatonal speed, on-perod, and ambent temperature). They wll be reflected n the type desgnaton. You can fnd the temsaton n the example S 0: C /A /A means: Poston Abbrevaton Explanaton Reference A Ol vscosty 0 Table 9..8 wth ventng Table

Table At operatng temperatures over 0 C, hgh pressure wll develop through ar expanson n the gearbox. Then a permanent pressure compensaton must be ensured. To ths end, the use of a vent flter s prescrbed. Code; numeral Vent flter 0 No Yes Table Vent flter If ventng s requred the wll be delvered wth a vent flter. The vent bores wll be equpped wth screw plugs for transport. The vent flter wll be enclosed as a separate tem and must be mounted n the ntended poston pror to commssonng. An elbow may be requred. Please adhere to the operatng nstructons! The poston wll be specfed n the order documents. Please refer to Fgure 8..9-; Installaton postons, for the poston of the flter. Here, E, for example, means: Ventng on sde. 80

When the drecton of rotaton s changed, ths results n a rotaton angle untl the counter-rotatng tooth flanks contact each other. Ths rotaton angle s called crcumferental backlash. Crcumferental backlash, measurng method The crcumferental backlash s measured after the drve shaft (N ) has been fxed. A force of around % of the nomnal torque s appled to the output shaft (N ) n both rotatonal drectons. A tooth backlash wll result between the two fnal postons. Ths can be measured as rotaton angle and s ndcated n mnutes of arc [arcmn]. Crcumferental backlash, type All ATEK worm can be delvered as low-backlash types. The followng values can be set wth standard gear sets: Orderng opton Gear set /0000 Standard <=0 arcmn <=0 arcmn /S Standard <=0 arcmn u.r. /S Standard <= arcmn u.r. /S0 Specal gear set <= arcmn u.r. Table Abbrevaton: u.r. upon request 9.. Self-lockng are self-lockng f the cannot be drven from the worm gear sde. The self-lockng s drectly related to the effcency of the gearbox. If self-lockng s demanded the correspondng effcency of the gearbox wth drvng worm must be below 0.. If a gearbox must be uncondtonally self-lockng, or alternatvely, uncondtonally not self-lockng, we ask to contact us for consultaton, gvng a descrpton of the case of applcaton. Statc self-lockng are statcally self-lockng f startng from standstll wth drvng worm gear s mpossble. The self-lockng depends on the ptch of the toothng. The angle s. to. Please enqure these. Vbratons may overrde / deactvate the self-lockng. Therefore a self-lockng toothng cannot always take the place of a brake or an antreversng devce. 8

7 Dynamc self-lockng are dynamcally self-lockng f, wth rotatng gearbox mechansm, contnued operaton s mpossble due to torque acton on the worm gear (output sde) of the gearbox. The overrun occurrng after swtchng-off depends on the rotatng masses on the drve sde. Dynamc self-lockng s only possble wth very large gear ratos n the range of low drvng speeds. Please enqure these. Lmts If drven parts have hgh mass nerta moments no self-lockng must occur durng the run-down process. Extremely hgh load peaks may occur n case of sudden blockng of the gearbox. In such cases, a gearbox wth multstart worm should be used whenever possble. Also, f a brakng motor or a separate brake s used on the drve sde, the brakng torque must not be too hgh, and t must be mtgated by usng an addtonal flywheel mass on the drve sde 8
