Towrds Miniml Resoures of Mesurement-sed Quntum Computtion riv: v1 [qunt-ph] Apr Introdution Simon Perdrix PPS, CNRS - niversité Pris 7 E-mil: simon.perdrix@pps.jussieu.fr Astrt. We improve the upper ound on the miniml resoures required for mesurementsed quntum omputtion [4, 3, 6]. Minimizing the resoures required for this model is key issue for experimentl reliztion of quntum omputer sed on projetive mesurements. This new upper ound llows lso to reply in the negtive to the open question presented in [5] out the existene of trde-off etween oservle nd nillry quits in mesurementsed quntum omputtion. The disovery of new models of quntum omputtion (QC), suh s the one-wy quntum omputer [7] nd the projetive mesurement-sed model [4], hve opened up new experimentl venues towrd the relistion of quntum omputer in lortories. At the sme time they hve hllenged the trditionl view out the nture of quntum omputtion. Sine the introdution of the quntum Turing mhine y Deutsh [1], unitry trnsformtions plys entrl rôle in QC. However, it is known tht the tion of unitry gtes n e simulted using the proess of quntum teleporttion sed on projetive mesurements-only [4]. Chrterizing the miniml resoures tht re suffiient for this model to e universl, is key issue. Resoures of mesurement-sed quntum omputtions re omposed of two ingredients: (i) universl fmily of oservles, whih desries the mesurements tht n e performed (ii) the numer of nillry quits used to simulte ny unitry trnsformtion. Suessive improvements of the upper ounds on these miniml resoures hve een mde y Leung nd others [, 3]. These ounds hve een signifintly redued when the stte trnsfer (whih is restrited form of teleporttion) hs een introdued: one two-quit oservle ( ) nd three one-quit oservles (, nd ( + Y)/ ), ssoited with only one nillry quit, re suffiient for simulting ny unitry-sed QC [6]. Are these resoures miniml? In [5], su-fmily of oservles (,, nd ( Y)/ ) is proved to e universl, however two nillry quits re used to mke this su-fmily universl. These two results led to n open question : is there trde-off etween oservles nd nillry quits in mesurement-sed QC? In this pper, we reply in the negtive to this
Towrds Miniml Resoures of Mesurement-sed Quntum Computtion open question y proving tht the su-fmily {,,( Y)/ } is universl using only one nillry quit, improving the upper ound on the miniml resoures required for mesurement-sed QC.. Mesurement-sed QC The simultion of given unitry trnsformtion y mens of projetive mesurements n e deomposed into: (Step of simultion) First, is proilistilly simulted up to Puli opertor, leding to σ, whereσ is either identity or Puli opertorσ x,σ y, orσ z. (Corretion) Then, orretive strtegy onsisting in ominig onditionlly steps of simultion is used to otin non-proilisti simultion of. Teleporttion n e relized y two suessive mesurements (figure 1), where mesurement is projetive mesurement in the sis of the sttes { B ij } i,j {0,1}, where B ij = 1 (σz i σj x )( ). A step of simultion of is otined y repling the seond mesurement y mesurement in the sis{( Id) B ij } i,j {0,1} (figure ). σ Figure 1. mesurement-sed teleporttion σ B σ Figure. Simultion of up to Puli opertor If step of simultion is represented s proilisti lk ox (figure 3, left), there exists orretive strtegy (figure 3, right) whih leds to full simultion of. This strtegy onsists in onditionlly omposing steps of simultion of, ut lso of eh Puli opertor. A similr step of simultion nd strtegy re given for the two-quit unitry trnsformtion Λ (Controlled-) in [4]. Notie tht this simultion uses four nillry quits. As onsequene, sine ny unitry trnsformtion n e deomposed into Λ nd one-quit unitry trnsformtions, ny unitry trnsformtion n e simulted y mens of projetive mesurements only. More preisely, for ny iruit C of size n with sis Λ nd ll one-quit unitry trnsformtions nd for ny ǫ > 0, O(nlog(n/ǫ)) projetive mesurements re enough to simultec with proility greter thn 1 ǫ.

Left: step of simultion strted into proilisti lk ox representtion Rigth: onditionl omposition of steps of simultion. Approximtive universlity, sed on finite fmily of projetive mesurements, n lso e onsidered. Leung [3] hs shown tht fmily omposed of five oservles 1 F 0 = {,,,, ( Y) } is pproximtively universl, using four nillry quits. It mens tht for ny unitry trnsformtion, ny ǫ > 0 nd ny δ > 0, there exists onditionl omposition of projetive mesurements from F 0 leding to the simultion of unitry trnsformtionũ with proility greter thn 1 ǫ nd suh tht Ũ < δ. σ Figure 4. Stte trnsfer V Vσ VV VV Vσ Figure 5. Step of simultion sed on stte trnsfer In order to derese the numer of two-quit mesurements four inf 0 nd the numer of nillry, n new sheme lled stte trnsfer hs een introdued [6]. The stte trnsfer (figure 4) reples the teleporttion sheme for relizing step of simultion. Composed of one two-quit mesurements, two one-quit mesurements, nd using only one nillry quit, the stte trnsfer n e used to simulte ny one-quit unitry trnsformtion up to Puli opertor (figure 5). For instne, simultions ofh ndht see setion 3 for definitions of H nd T re represented in figure 6. Moreover sheme omposed of two two-quit mesurements, two one-quit mesurements, nd using only one nillry quit n e used to simulted Λ up to Puli opertor (figure 7). Sine {H,T,Λ} is universl fmily 1 of unitry trnsformtions, the fmily F 1 = {,,, ( Y)} of oservles is pproximtively universl, using one nillry quit [6]. This result improves the result y Leung, sine only one two-quit mesurement nd one nillry quit re used, insted of four two-quit mesurements nd four nillry quits. Moreover, one n prove tht t lest one
Towrds Miniml Resoures of Mesurement-sed Quntum Computtion 4 two-quit mesurement nd one nillry quit re required for pproximtive universlity. Thus, it turns out tht the upper ound on the miniml resoures for mesurement-sed QC differs form the lower ound, on the numer of one-quit mesurements only. Y/ σh σht Figure 6. Simultion ofh ndht up to Puli opertor. σ Λ Figure 7. Simultion ofλ up to Puli opertor. In [5], it hs een shown tht the numer of these one-quit mesurements n e 1 deresed, sine the fmily F = {,, ( Y)}, omposed of one two-quit nd only two one-quit mesurements, is lso pproximtively universl, using two nillry quit. The proof is sed on the simultion of -mesurements y mens of nd mesurements (figure 8). This result leds to possile trde-off etween the numer of one-quit mesurements nd the numer of nillry quits required for pproximtive universlity. Figure 8. -mesurement simultion In this pper, we menly prove tht the fmily F is pproximtively universl, using only one nillry quit. Thus, the upper ound on the miniml resoures required for pproximtive universlity is improved, nd moreover we nswer the open question of the trde-off etween oservles nd nillry quits. Notie tht we prove tht the trde-off onjetured in [5] does not exist, ut nother trde-off etween oservles nd nillry quits my exist sine the ounds on the miniml resoures for mesurement-sed quntum omputtion re not tight. 3. niversl fmily of unitry trnsformtions There exist severl universl fmilies of unitry trnsformtions, for instne {H, T, Λ} is one of them:
Towrds Miniml Resoures of Mesurement-sed Quntum Computtion 5 ( ) ( ) H = , T =, Λ = e iπ Λ = We prove tht the fmily{ht,σ y,λ} is lso pproximtively universl: Theorem 1 = {HT,σ y,λ} is pproximtively universl. The proof is sed on the following properties. Let R n (α) e the rottion of the Bloh sphere out the xisnthrough n ngleα. Proposition 1 If n = (,,) is rel unit vetor, then for ny α, R n (α) = os(α/)i isin(α/)(σ x +σ y +σ z ). Proposition For given vetor n of the Bloh sphere, if θ is n irrtionl multiple of π, then for nyαnd nyǫ > 0, there exists k suh tht R n (α) R n (θ) k ) < ǫ/3 Proposition 3 If n nd m re non prllel vetors of the Bloh sphere, then for ny onequit unitry trnsformtion, there exists α, β, γ, δ suh tht: = e iα R n (β)r m (γ)r n (δ) Proposition 4 (Włodrski [8]) If α is not n integer multiple of π/4 nd osβ = os α, then either α or β is n irrtionl multiple ofπ. Proof of theorem 1: First we prove tht ny 1-quit unitry trnsformtion n e pproximted y HT nd σ y HT. Consider the unitry trnsformtions 1 = T, = HTH, 3 = σ y HTHσ y. Notie tht T is, up to n unimportnt glol phse, rottion y π/4 rdins round z xis on the Blok sphere: 1 = T = e iπ/8 (os(π/8)i isin(π/8)σ z ) = HTH = e iπ/8 (os(π/8)i isin(π/8)σ x ) 3 = σ y HTHσ y = e iπ/8 (os(π/8)i +isin(π/8)σ x ) Composing 1 nd gives, up to glol phse: 1 = (os(π/8)i isin(π/8)σ x )(os(π/8)i isin(π/8)σ z ) = os (π/8)i i[os(π/8)(σ x +σ z ) sin(π/8)σ y ]sin(π/8)
Towrds Miniml Resoures of Mesurement-sed Quntum Computtion 6 Aording to proposition 1, 1 is rottion of the Bloh sphere out n xis long n = (os(π/8), sin(π/8),os(π/8)) nd through n ngle θ defined s solution of os(θ/) = os (π/8). Sine π/8 is not n integer multiple of π/4 ut rtionl multiple of π, ording to proposition 4, suh θ is n irrtionl multiple of π. This irrtionlity implies tht for ny ngle α, the rottion round n out ngle α n e pproximted to ritrry ury y repeting rottions round n out ngleθ (see proposition 3). For ny α nd ny ǫ > 0, there existsk suh tht R n (α) R n (θ) k ) < ǫ/3 Moreover, omposing 1 nd 3 gives, up to glol phse: 3 1 = (os(π/8)i +isin(π/8)σ x )(os(π/8)i isin(π/8)σ z ) = os (π/8)i i[os(π/8)( σ x +σ z )+sin(π/8)σ y ]sin(π/8) 3 1 is rottion of the Bloh sphere out n xis longm = ( os(π/8),sin(π/8),os(π/8)) nd through the ngleθ. Thus, for nyαnd nyǫ > 0, there existsk suh tht R m (α) R m (θ) k ) < ǫ/3 Sine n nd m re non-prllel, ny one-quit unitry trnsformtion, ording to proposition, n e deomposed into rottions round n nd m : There exist α, β, γ, δ suh tht = e iα R n (β)r m (γ)r n (δ) Finlly, for ny ndǫ > 0, there existk 1,k,k 3 suh tht R n (θ) k 1 R m (θ) k R n (θ) k 3 < ǫ Thus, ny one-quit unitry trnsformtion n e pproximted y mens of 1, nd 3 1. Sine 1 = (HT)(HT) nd 3 1 = σ y HTHσ y T = (σ y HT)(σ y HT), the fmily {HT,σ y } pproximtes ny one-quit unitry trnsformtion. With the dditionlλ gte, the fmily is pproximtively universl. 4. niversl fmily of projetive mesurements In [5], the fmily of oservles F = {,, Y } is proved to e pproximtively universl using two nillry quits. We prove tht this fmily requires only one nillry quit to e universl: Theorem F = {,, Y } is pproximtively universl, using one nillry quit only. The proof onsists in simulting the unitry trnsformtions of the universl fmily. First, one n notie ththt n e simulted up to Puli opertor, using mesurements of F, s it is depited in figure 6. So, the universlity is redued to the ility to simulte Λ nd the Puli opertors Puli opertors re needed to simultedσ y F, ut lso to perform the orretions required y the orretive strtegy (figure 3).
Towrds Miniml Resoures of Mesurement-sed Quntum Computtion 7 Lemm 5 For given -quit register, nd one nillry quit, the sequene of mesurements ording to,,, nd (see figure 9) simultesλ(id H) on quits,, up to Puli opertor. The resulting stte is loted on quitsnd. σ Λ(Id H) Figure 9. Simultion of Λ(Id H) Proof: One n show tht, if the stte of the register, is efore the sequene of mesurements, the stte of the register, fter the mesurements is σλ(id H), where σ = σ s 1 z σ s 3 x σ s +s 4 z nd s i s re the lssil outomes of the sequene of mesurements. In order to simulte Puli opertors, new sheme, different from the stte trnsfer, is introdued. Lemm 6 For given quit nd one nillry quit, the sequene of mesurements,, nd (figure 10) simultes, on quit, the pplition of σ z with proility1/ ndid with proility1/. k σ k z Figure 10. Simultion ofσ z Proof: Let = α 0 +β 1 e the stte of quit. After the first mesurement, the stte of the register, is ψ 1 = (σ s 1 x Id) 0 where s 1 {0,1} is the lssil outome of the mesurement. Sine ψ 1 ψ 1 = 0, the stte of the register, is: ψ = (σs 1 x Id)(Id+( 1) s ) 0 = (σs 1 x σs z Id)( (σ z ) Lets 3 {0,1} e the outome of the lst mesurement, on quit. Ifs 1 = s 3 then stte of the quit is, nd σ z otherwise. One n prove tht these two possiilities our with equl proilities. ( Lemm ) 7 For given quit ( ) nd one nillry quit, the sequene of mesurements Y Y,, nd (figure 11) simultes, on quit, the pplition of σ x with proility 1/ nd Id with proility 1/.
Towrds Miniml Resoures of Mesurement-sed Quntum Computtion 8 ( Y)/ ( Y)/ k σ x Figure 11. Simultion ofσ x The proof of lemm 7 is similr to the proof of lemm 6. Proof of theorem : First notie tht the fmily of unitry trnsformtions = {HT,σ y,λ(i H)} is pproximtively universl sine = {HT,σ y,λ} is universl. HT ndλ(i H) n e simulted up to Puli opertor (lemms 5). The universlity of the fmily of oservles F = {,, Y } is redued to the ility to simulte ny Puli opertors. Lemm 7 (resp. lemm 6), shows tht σ x (σ z ) n e simulted with proility 1/, moreover if the simultion fils, the resulting stte is sme s the originl one. Thus, this simultion n e repeted until full simultion of σ x (σ z ). Finlly, σ y = iσ z σ x n e simulted, up to glol phse, y omining simultions of σ x nd σ z. Thus, F = {,, Y } is pproximtively universl using only one nillry quit. 5. Conlusion We hve proved new upper ound on the miniml resoures required for mesurementsed QC: one two-quit, nd two one-quit oservles re universl, using one nillry quit only. This new upper ound hs experimentl pplitions, ut llows lso to prove tht the trde-off etween oservles nd nillry quits, onjetured in [5], does not exist. This new upper ound is not tight sine the lower ound on the miniml resoures for this model is one two-quit oservle nd one nillry quit. Referenes [1] D. Deutsh.
