Iitially, the workig substace of SZE was cosidered to be a sigle particle. Later o, researchers has eteded the studies of SZE to multi-particle systems ad eve to quatum regime. Here we preset a detailed study of classical SZE cosistig particles with iter- particle iteractios, i.e., the workig substace is a low desity o-ideal gas ad compare the work etractio with respect to SZE with o-iteractig multi particle system as workig substace. e have cosidered two cases of iteractios amely: (i) hard core iteractios ad (ii) square well iteractio. Our study reveals that work etractio is less whe more particles are iteractig through hard core iteractios. More work is etracted whe the particles are iteractig via square well iteractio. Aother importat result for the secod case is that as we icrease the particle umber the work etractio becomes idepedet of the iitial positio of the partitio, as opposed to the first case. ork etractio depeds crucially o the iitial positio of the partitio. More work ca be etracted with larger umber of particles whe partitio is iserted at positios ear the boudary walls. PACS umbers: a Keywords: Szilard Egie, iformatio, iteractig particles I. ITRODUCTIO I 99, Leo Szilard put forward a classic demostratio of Mawell s demo [, ] by describig a egie that uses the iformatio acquired by measuremet of the state of the workig substace to perform some work [3]. Szilard cosidered a sigle particle i a bo ad eecuted the followig four steps to etract work from the system:(a) isert a partitio at the middle of the bo, (b) measure the whether the particle is i the right or left half, (c) attach the bo with a bath at iverse temperature β ad allow the partitio to move isothermally ad quasistatically till the ed of the bo ad (d) remove the partitio so that the system regais its iitial state. ow here arises a crucial questio regardig the compatibility betwee this cyclic thermodyamic process ad the secod law of thermodyamics. Apparetly, at first stace oe might thik that work has bee etracted out of owhere. But it is ot the case. It is ow a widely kow fact that the measuremet process icludig erasure has a etropic cost which saves the secod law [4, 5]. Employmet of iformatio to etract work out of a system has led to some isightful physics i the area of o-equilibrium thermodyamics [6 0]. Although Szilard egie has bee iitially pictured i classical framework with sigle particle, recetly it has bee traslated to quatum regime alog with multi-particle sceario ad asymmetric effects [ 4]. I this work we cosidered a multi-particle classical Szilard egie, but these particle does ot behave like a ideal gas. Istead we take particle o-ideal gas as our workig substace i.e., the particles have iteractios betwee them. Here we have assumed the gas to be of low desity so that we ca safely use the equatio of state of the gas upto secod virial co-efficiet. e worked o two types of iteractios: (i) hard core iteractio ad (ii) square well iteractio. The gas is filled i a bo of legth L ad surface area A(total volume V = A.L). The partitio is iserted vetically at l = L (0 < < ). et the umber of particle is measured o the left half, say. The system udergoes a isothermal epasio i cotact with the heat bath ad the fial positio of the partitio be leq. Lastly the partitio is removed. The work doe by the SZE is give by [, 3] tot = ( ) p p l. () β =0 f priyo@iopb.res.i, jaya@iopb.res.i
2 β = (k B T ), where k B deotes the Boltzma costat which is take to be uity i subsequet epressios. Here p ad f are give by p = Z, (L) Z, (L); f Z, (leq) = Z, (l eq), () where Z, (X) = Z (X)Z (L X) is a partitio fuctio that describes the situatio of particles to the left of the partitio ad the remaiig to the right, i a thermal equilibrium. Physically, p deotes the probability that there are particles to the left after partitio ad f represets the probability to choose the case of particles o the left side of the wall whe the wall is iserted at l eq i the time backward process. ote that oe ca choose l freely whe the wall is iserted while l eq is determied from the force (pressure) balace o both sides of the wall F L + F R = 0. The whole problem ow boils dow to the calculatio of the partitio fuctio for o-ideal gas i a cofied volume for two iteractio potetials, as metioed above. Sectio II deals with the partitio fuctio for o-ideal gases. Sectios III A ad III B describes work etractio usig o-ideal gases with hard-core potetial ad square well iteractios respectively. A short discussio is added i Sectio IV. Fially we coclude i Sectio V. Each sectio is made self cosistet. II. PARTITIO FUCTIO OF O-IDEAL GAS Partitio fuctio of o-ideal gas cosistig of iteractig particles cofied i a bo of legth L ad volume V at iverse temperature β is give by Z = Z id [ + V ] {e βu( r) }d 3 r. (3) Here Z id is the partitio fuctio for ideal gas ad is give by Z id = cl!, (4) where c is some costat. U( r) is the iteractio potetial betwee two particles. If U( r) is take to be spherically symmetric oe ca itegrate out the agular degrees of freedom resultig [ Z = Z id + V 4π = cl! ] r {e βu(r) }dr, [ ] V B (β), (5) where B (β) = π r {e βu(r) }dr is the secod virial co-efficiet that arises i the equatio of state of the o-ideal gas. A. Hard Core iteractio I this model the iteractio potetial is give by where σ is the hard core radius. U(r) = r < σ, = 0 σ < r, (6)
3 FIG.. Hard core potetial. The epressio for B (β) is B (β) = π σ 0 r dr = 3 πσ3, (7) ad the correpodig partitio fuctio is give by Z = cl! [ ] 3V πσ3. (8) Equatio of state for such a o-ideal gas with hard core potetial is βp = V 3V πσ3, (9) where P is the pressure of the gas. B. Square well iteractio I this case the iteractio potetial is give by U(r) = r < σ = ε σ < r < Rσ = 0 Rσ < r. (0) 3
4 FIG.. Square well potetial. The epressio for B (β) is B (β) = π{ σ 0 r dr + (e βε ) = 3 πσ3 { (R 3 )(e βε )} Rσ σ r dr} = C C e βε, () where C = 3 πσ3 R 3 ad C = 3 πσ3 (R 3 ). The partitio fuctio is give by Z = { cl }! V (C C e βε ). () Correspodig equatio of state for the o-ideal gas with square well iteractio betwee particles is βp = ( ) V + B (β) = ( ) V V + (C C e βε ). (3) V III. ORK EXTRACTIO I classical systems, isertio ad removal of partitio does ot ivolve work doe o the system. ork etractio is oly possible durig the isothermal process ad it is give by Eq.. The partitio is iitially iserted at l = L ad durig the isothermal process it shifts to l = leq depedig o the umber of particles o the left/ right side. Sice the partitio fuctio ca ow be calculated we ca easily compute p, f ad the work for the above metioed iteractios. A. Hard core iteractio I this type of iteractio betwee particles, p is calculated usig Eq. ad 8 Z, (L) p = Z, (L) Z (L)Z (( )L) = Z (L)Z (( )L) ( = ) ( ) ( α α( ) )[ ] ( ) ( ) ( α )[ α( ) ] (4) 4
5 Here α = 3V πσ3. Before the computatio of f, we eed to calculate the equilibrium legth l eq upto which the partitio moves due to the pressure differece o two sides of the partitio. For this we require pressure eerted o the partitio by the gas o both sides to be same, i.e., P L = P R, which ca be rewritte usig the equatio of state (Eq.9)as Aleq 3V πσ3 = A(L leq) 3V πσ3 ( ), A(L l eq) 3V πσ3 ( ) = ( )Al eq 3V πσ3 ( ), leq = L. (5) ow the epressio of f ca be easily calculated ad is give by f = ( ) ( ) ( ) ( α)[ α( )] ( ) ( ( ) ( α ) )[ α( )] (6) α=0.00 =0. =0.3 = =0.5 α=0, = FIG. 3. Average work etractio as fuctio of umber of particles. Fig.3 represets the average work as the fuctio of umber of particles with hard core iteractios for differet iitial positio of the partitio. Similar to the o-iteractig case, work etractio decreases whe umber of particles icreases. For compariso, we have also icluded i the figure, the work etractio plot with oiteractig particles (α = 0) whe the partitio is iitially placed at the mid-poit = 0.5. As ca be see, work etractio lower whe we are dealig with o-ideal gases rather tha ideal gases. 5

Fig.4 depicts the behavior of average work as a fuctio of the positio where the partitio is iitially iserted. The plot clearly shows that iteractios plays a major role i work etractio as the umber of particles is icreased. Iter-particle iteractios decreases work etractio. Average work is symmetric about = 0.5 for obvious reaso. Aother poit to be oted is that work etractio is more for 0.5, as particle umber is icreased. B. Square well potetial I this type of iteractio betwee particles, p is calculated usig Eq. ad p = Z, (L) Z, (L), Z (L)Z (( )L) = Z (L)Z (( )L), ( = ) ( ) ( γ γ( ) )[ ] ( ) ( ) ( γ )[ γ( ) ], (7) where γ = C C e βε with C = V C = πσ3 R 3 3V = αr 3 ad C = V C = πσ3 (R 3 ) 3V = α(r 3 ). To calculate the equilibrium positio of the partitio we eed to equate the pressure (give by Eq.3) o the both sides of the partitio ad hece we eed to solve the followig equatio: Al eq ( ) + (C C e βε ) Aleq = [ ] A(L leq) + (C C e βε ) A(L leq). (8) The physical solutio of the above equatio is l eq = (/)L. Usig Eq., f ca be calculated f = = Z, (l eq) Z, (l eq), Z (l eq)z (L l eq) Z (l eq)z (L l eq), = ( ) ( ) ( ) ( γ)[ γ( )] ( ) ( ) ( ) ( γ )[ γ( )] (9) 6

Fig.5 shows the behavior of average work etractio as we icrease the umber of particle. The plot shows that for small umber of particles work etractio is less tha the o-iteractig case. But with icreasig particle umber the more work is etracted usig iteractig particle system. Aother importat thig to otice is that work etractio is idepedet of the iitial positio of the partitio for higher values of. This fact is supported by the plot give i Fig.6, where the amout of work is plotted agaist - iitial positio of wall- for differet values. This graph depicts the fact that as oe icrease the umber of particles, the maimum work etractio, which was iitially at = 0.5, shifts to either sides ad fially for =, the effect of asymmetry o work etractio becomes very less i the rage α=0.00, R=0, ε= =, o Iteractio = =5 =0 = FIG. 6. DISCUSSIOS e ow discuss the role of iteractios i work etractio by providig a comparative study betwee oiteractig ad iteractig particle systems. Figs. 0 ad compare the work etractio for three cases. ork etractio i systems with square well iteractios betwee particles is more with respect to o-iteractig system ad particles with hard core iteractios. This is due to the formatio of boud states. If probability of formatio of boud states is large due to icreased well width ad depth, there will be higher probability to fid large umber of particles o oe side. As a result the distace betwee the iitial ad the fial equilibrium positio of the partitio will be more. This will i tur icrease the work etractio. This effect is ot see i case of particles iteractig via hard core iteractio ad hece work etractio decreases i that case o Iteractio Hard core Square well α=0.00, R=0, ε=, = FIG. 0. COCLUSIO I coclusio, we have studied the iteractig multi-particle classical Szilard egie. I our article, we dealt with workig systems cosistig of particles which iteract with themselves via hard core ad square well iteractios. A major assumptio i our work is that we cosidered the workig systems to be o-ideal gas with low desity, so that we ca safely use the equatio of state of the gas upto secod virial co-efficiet. Oe ca go beyod this assumptio to mimic with the realistic picture ad cosider higher order virial co-efficiets but there is o ed to it. It will obviously give chages i work etractio. But to first approimatio we are able to show aalytically how iter-particle iteractios affect work etractio. Our study reveals that work etractio is less whe more particles are iteractig through hard core iteractios. More work is etracted whe the particles are iteractig via square well iteractio. Aother importat result for the secod case(square well iteractios) is that as we icrease the particle umber the work etractio becomes idepedet of the iitial positio of the partitio, as opposed to the first case(hard core iteractios). ork etractio depeds crucially o the iitial positio of the partitio. More work ca be etracted with larger umber of particles whe partitio is iserted at positios ear the boudary walls. VI. ACKOLEDGEMET AMJ thaks DST, Idia for fiacial support (through J. C.
