2 Introduction WW and ZZ finals states dominate Higgs searches at Higgs Mass WW 2L2ν has best sensitivity in GeV range ZZ 4L is one of the best channels for discovery best to study properties ZZ (2L2ν and 4L) dominate at 200GeV and above Low Mass High Mass 2

4 Final States 4L - cleanest signature (ZZ) 4-body mass reconstruction 2L2ν - harder, but useful thanks to good branching ratio (WW and ZZ) other channels are mostly less sensitive due to large SM backgrounds not covered in this talk 4

8 HWW Analysis Challenges 1E+08 1E+07 1E+06 1E+05 1E+04 1E+03 1E+02 Cross-section x Branching Ratio (fb) Wjets Drell-Yan Top WW Higgs160 Key selection requirements: lepton pt>10 GeV with tight identification and isolation - QCD, Wjets large missing transverse energy (MET) and Z veto - Drell-Yan number of jet classification (Pt>30GeV) and b-quark veto - Top kinematics (mll, dφ) - WW Final step selection requirements are optimized for different Higgs mass hypotheses Underestimation of any background can lead to a signal like excess! Background estimation is the most important part of the analysis 8
9 Wjets A Loose QCD C Loose Data B Tight QCD D Tight Data Jets - main source of fakes Requirements: pt, isolation, impact parameter, quality Tight Loose: time more fake leptons Use QCD sample to measure fake rate: ε = NB/NA Background estimation: N D εn C = N C N B N A Systematic uncertainty of the method: ~35% 9
10 Missing Energy with PileUp 2011 data differs from 2010: ~8 interactions per bunch crossing larger tails in the missing energy distribution Two different MET variables: nominal - calorimeter and tracker only tracker based MET not affected by pile up pfmet and trkmet are weakly correlated for backgrounds use the smaller one for each event minmet>40 (same flavor) minmet>20 (opposite flavor) 10
11 Drell-Yan Estimation Drell-Yan: ee/μμ, but not eμ Use eμ events to subtract backgrounds Narrow Z-peak - little background Rout/in is measure both in simulation and in data Systematic uncertainties can be as large as 100% 11
12 Top Background Jet veto kills top Remaining top can be tagged: soft b-jets soft muons Top tagging eff is ~50% for 0-jet Estimate residual top: N top = N tag ε 1 ε Measure ε in 1-bjet events There mast be another b-quark Systematics ~ 20-30% 12
13 WW Background WW is an irreducible background - one order of magnitude larger SM Higgs Kinematics is the main discriminator: low mass - dphi, Mll for mh 130 need to lower lepton pt larger Wjets background above 200GeV - WW and Higgs harder to distinguish Use signal free events to calibrate WW yield 13
14 Other Backgrounds Other backgrounds are much smaller WZ/ZZ - no extra leptons. Simulation should get it right Conversions (Wjets, Wγ): no missing hits in pixel detector conversion pair veto same-sign closure Wγ* - was a major concern measure it in data Madgraph simulates it pretty well 14
15 Cut Based Analysis Discriminating variables: di-lepton mass angle between two leptons lepton pt transverse mass (dilepton + MET) For 2-jets: η >3.5, mjj>450gev Background estimation: from data at Higgs selection level: Wjets, Drell-Yan, WW from data at WW selection level: Top from Monte Carlo: WZ, ZZ, Wγ, Drell-Yan ττ 15
16 Multivariate Analysis 0-jet same flavor 1-jet same flavor 0-jet opposite flavor 1-jet opposite flavor MVA - Boosted Decision Tree Same inputs as cut based plus a few more Use binned MVA output to look for signal - more optimal use of information The expected exclusion range with 4.6/fb of data: Cut based: [129, 236] GeV MVA based: [127, 270] GeV 16
17 Extracting a Limit Example of Bayesian procedure for a simple counting experiment. expect 10 background events a model predicts 10 signal events observed - 12 f(s B,N) = e (S+B) (S + B) N N! f(s B=10,N=12) 95% Upper Limit at 95% C.L. ~ 9.97 μ = UL/SignalExpected ~ 1 - excluded S % of pseudo experiments pseudo-experiments (Poisson with mean 10) Median μ is 0.8 In 68% of the cases μ in [0.6, 1.1] In 95% of the cases μ in [0.4, 1.6] brt μ 17
18 Results Shape analysis was cross checked: Matrix Element method Dilepton Mass instead of BDT Results are consistent with comparable sensitivity gain at low Higgs mass Limits: Expected exclusion region: [127,270] GeV Observed exclusion region: [129,270] GeV Small excess below 140GeV at ~1σ level 18
19 Future Perspectives In low mass region HWW becomes systematic limited WW still dominates as a main background in the most sensitive channels High Pile-up in 2012 will have an impact on the analysis worse MET and worse lepton identification It is very hard to have more than 3σ Standard Model Higgs discovery sensitivity due to systematics Relative sensitivity of WW in 2012 can get worse compared with other channels 19

21 HZZ2l2ν Analysis Challenges Key selection requirements: Z ee/μμ events with lepton pt>20 GeV Mass in [76,106] GeV (Top, WW, Wjets) large MET and Ptll>45 GeV (Drell-Yan) extra lepton veto (WZ) b-jet and soft-muon veto (Top) MT is the main discriminating variable for Higgs against remaining backgrounds works well only at higher Higgs mass Cut based and shape-based analyses performed optimized for different Higgs mass points 21

27 HZZ4L Backgrounds Dominant background: ZZ* Low mass: Z+jets and Z+heavy flavor become significant Too few events can t use mass sideband for background normalization ZZ* is normalized to MC Z+jets is estimated using data driven techniques similar to HWW analysis 27

29 Future Perspectives HZZ4L is statistics limited analysis High Pile-up in 2012 will have little effect Not all the available information was used Expect new more sensitive analysis this year While in 2011 relative contribution of HZZ4L at 125GeV was worse than Hgg and HWW, in 2012 it may improve HZZ4L is a discovery channel 29
