No Grade levels: 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th Course learning environment: Classroom Based Course Description Course overview: This is a one-year Algebra course that provides a comprehensive look at the study of algebraic concepts. Students are challenged to develop critical thinking and creative problem solving skills to meet the Common Core Standards in Algebra including: developing an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics, learning about equations, functions, inequalities, and statistical analysis. Students in this class will develop algebraic thinking, problem solving and analytical skills while building the necessary foundation for the upper level math courses. This course was written around the 2015 Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Common Core edition of Algebra 1 textbook, but was specifically written to align with any CA adopted textbook for Algebra 1. Course content: Quantities and Modeling

2 Unit 1 is titled Quantities and Modeling. It consists of 2 chapters (modules) titled: Quantitative Reasoning and Algebraic Models. Students will create and solve equations, model quantities, report with precision and accuracy, solve for variables create and solve compound inequalities, and model with expressions. Understanding Functions Unit 2 is titled Understanding Functions and consists of two modules titled Functions and Models and Patterns and Sequences. Students will graph relationships, understand relations and functions, model with functions an graph functions. Students will identify and graph sequences, construct arithmetic sequences nd model with arithmetic sequences. Linear Functions, Equations, and Inequalities Unit 3 is titled Linear Functions, Equations, and Inequalities and consists of three modules, Linear Functions, Forms of Linear Equations, and Linear Equations and Inequalities. Students will understand linear functions, use intercepts, interpret rate of change and slope of a line. They will use slope-intercept and point form of lines, as well as standard form of a line. They will transform linear functions and compare properties of linear functions. Students will learn how to

3 model linear relationships, use functions to solve one-variable equations and analyze linear inequalities in two variables. Statistical Models Unit 4 is titled Statistical Models and consists of three modules titled, Multi-Variable Categorical Data, One Variable Data Distributions, and Linear Modeling and Regression. Students will learn to analyze two-way frequency tables and relative frequency. Students will understand measures of center spread, data distributions and outliers, histograms and box plots, and normal distributions. Students will se scatter plots and trend lines as well as fit a linear model to data. Linear Systems and Piecewise-Defined Functions Unit 5 is titled Linear Systems and Piecewise-Defined Functions and consists of three modules titled, Solving Systems of Linear Equations, Modeling with Linear Systems and Piecewise- Defined Functions. In this unit students will solve linear systems by: graphing, substitution, adding and subtracting, and by multiplying first. Students will create linear equations and graph systems of linear inequalities. Students will model with linear equations. They will understand piecewise-defined functions, analyze absolute value functions and transformations, as well as solve absolute value equations and inequalities.

4 Exponential Relationships Unit 6 is titled Exponential Relationships and consists of three modules titled, Rational Exponents and Radicals, Geometric Sequences and Exponential Functions, and Exponential Equations and Models. Students will understand rational exponents and radicals, simplify expressions with rational exponents and radicals. Students will understand geometric sequences, graph exponential functions, and transform exponential functions. They will construct geometric sequences and exponential functions. They will use graphs and properties to solve equations with exponents, model exponential growth and decay, use exponential regression models, and compare linear and exponential models. Polynomial Operations Unit 7 is titled Polynomial Operations and consists of two modules titled, Adding and Subtracting Polynomials and Multiplying Polynomials. In this unit students will understand polynomial expressions, adding, subtracting and multiplying polynomial expressions. They will also analyze special products of binomials.

5 Quadratic Functions Unit 8 is titled Quadratic Functions and consists of two modules titled, Graphing Quadratic Functions and Connecting Intercepts, Zeros, and Factors. Students will understand quadratic functions, transform quadratic functions, and interpret vertex form and standard form. Students will connect intercepts and zeros. They will connect intercept and linear factors and apply the Zero Product Property to solve equations. Quadratic Equations and Modeling Unit 9 is titled Quadratic Equations and Modeling and consists of three modules titled, Using Factors to Solve Quadratic Equations, Using Square Roots to Solve Quadratic Equations, and Linear, Exponential, and Quadratic Models. Students will slve equations by factoring with and without coefficients. They will use special factors to solve equations, solve equations by taking the square root, solve equations by completing the square, use the quadratic formula to solve equations, choose a method for solving quadratic equations and solve nonlinear systems. Students will also model with quadratic functions and compare linear, exponential, and quadratic models. Inverse Relationships Unit 10 is titled Inverse Relationships and consists of one module titled, Functions and Inverses. Students will graph polynomial functions, understand inverse functions, graph square root functions, and graph cube rot functions.
