1 Generation of class fields by using the Weber function arxiv: v3 [math.nt] 12 Oct 2014 Ja Kyung Koo, Dong Hwa Shin and Dong Sung Yoon Abstract Let K be an imaginary quadratic field and O K be its ring of integers. Let h E be the Weber function on certain elliptic curve E with complex multiplication by O K. We show that if N (> 1) is an integer prime to 6, then the function h E alone generates theray class field modulono K over K whenevaluated at some N-torsion point of E, which wouldbeapartial answer to thequestion mentioned in[13, p.134]. 1 Introduction For a lattice Λ in C, let and g 2 (Λ) 60 λ Λ\{0} 1 λ 4, g 3(Λ) 140 λ Λ\{0} j(λ) 1728 g 2(Λ) 3 (Λ). 1 λ 6, (Λ) g 2(Λ) 3 27g 3 (Λ) 2 Note that the series g 2 (Λ) and g 3 (Λ) converge absolutely, and (Λ) 0 ([1, Lemma 10.2 and Proposition 10.7]). We further define the Weierstrass -function relative to Λ by (z;λ) 1 z + ( 1 2 (z λ) 1 ) (z C) 2 λ 2 λ Λ\{0} with derivative (z;λ) d (z;λ)/dz. This is an even function which is periodic with respect to Λ Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 11R37; Secondary 11G15, 11G16. Key words and phrases. 2 2 Let K be an imaginary quadratic field and O K be its ring of integers. Let E be the elliptic curve over C with parametrization ϕ E : C/O K E(C) : y 2 4x 3 g 2 (O K )x g 3 (O K ) z ( (z;o K ), (z;o K )) (1) so that it has complex multiplication by O K with j-invariant j(e) j(o K ) (see [1, 14] or [14, Chapter 6]). Then the map h E : E P 1 defined by g 2 (O K )g 3 (O K ) (z;o K ) if j(e) 0,1728, (O K ) g 2 (O K ) 2 h E (ϕ E (z)) (O K ) (z;o K) 2 if j(e) 1728, g 3 (O K ) (O K ) (z;o K) 3 if j(e) 0 gives rise to an isomorphism from E/Aut(E) onto P 1 ([13, Chapter II, Example 5.5.2]), which is called the Weber function on E. Let f be a proper nontrivial ideal of O K and K f be the ray class field of K modulo f (see 3). Hasse ([3]) showed by utilizing the theory of complex multiplication that (2) K f K(j(E),h E (E[f])) (3) where E[f] is the group of f-torsion points of E. However, it is still an open question whether h E (P) alone generates K f over K for some P E[f] as far as we understand. In this paper we shall give a partial answer to this question. More precisely, let f NO K for an integer N > 1 prime to 6, and let K O be the ring class field of the order O of conductor N in K (see 3). We shall show that if K is different from Q( 1) and Q( 3), then the relative norm N Kf /K O (h E (ϕ E (2/N)) h E (ϕ E (1/N))) t (Z/NZ) /{±1} (h E (ϕ E (2t/N)) h E (ϕ E (t/n))) generates K O over K (Theorem 6.2 and Remark 6.3). It then follows that h E (ϕ E (1/N)) indeed generates K f over K (Corollary 6.4). For this we shall introduce Fricke invariants and use the second Kronecker s limit formula concerning Siegel-Ramachandra invariants. 2 Fricke and Siegel functions Let H {τ C Im(τ) > 0} be the complex upper half-plane. We define the elliptic modular function j(τ) on H by j(τ) j([τ,1]) 1728 g 2([τ,1]) 3 ([τ,1]). (4)
3 Furthermore, for k {1,2,3} and [ r 1 ] Q 2 \ Z 2 we define the k-th Fricke function f (k) [ r 1 (τ) on H by ] g 2 ([τ,1])g 3 ([τ,1]) (r 1 τ + ;[τ,1]) if k 1, ([τ,1]) f (k) [ r 1 ] (τ) g 2 ([τ,1]) 2 ([τ,1]) (r 1τ + ;[τ,1]) 2 if k 2, (5) g 3 ([τ,1]) ([τ,1]) (r 1τ + ;[τ,1]) 3 if k 3 which is holomorphic on H and depends only on ±[ r 1 ] (mod Z 2 ) ([11, 6.1.A]). Here, for the sake of convenience, we often write f [ r 1 ] (τ) for f(1) [ r 1 ] (τ). Let { Q(j(τ)) if N 1, F N Q(j(τ),f [ r 1 ] (τ) [ r 1 ] (1/N)Z 2 \Z 2 ) if N 2. Thenitiswell-knownthatF N isagaloisextension off 1 whosegaloisgroupisisomorphic to GL 2 (Z/NZ)/{±I 2 } ([11, Theorem 6.6 (1) and (2)]). In fact, F N coincides with the field of all meromorphic modular functions of level N whose Fourier expansions with respect to q 1/N (q e 2πiτ ) have coefficients in the N-th cyclotomic field ([11, Proposition 6.9 (1)]). Let g [ r 1 ] (τ) be the Siegel function on H given by the following infinite product g [ r 1 ] (τ) eπi(r 1 1) q (1/2)B 2(r 1 ) (1 q r 1 e 2πi ) (1 q n+r 1 e 2πi )(1 q n r 1 e 2πi ), where B 2 (X) X 2 X + 1/6 is the second Bernoulli polynomial. Observe that it has neither zerosnorpoles onh, andits12n-thpower belongstof N ([8, Chapte, Theorem 1.2]). Lemma 2.1. Let u,v Q 2 \Z 2 such that u ±v (mod Z 2 ). Then we have the relation n1 (f u (τ) f v (τ)) 6 j(τ)2 (j(τ) 1728) g u+v (τ) 6 g u v (τ) 6 g u (τ) 12 g v (τ) 12. Proof. It follows from [9, Chapter 18, Theorem 2], [8, p.29 and p.51] and definitions (4) and (5). 3 Class fields over imaginary quadratic fields Let K be an imaginary quadratic field of discriminant d K and O K be its ring of integers. If we set τ K d K + d K, 2
4 then we see that τ K H and O K [τ K,1] ([1, p.103]). Let f be a nontrivial ideal of O K. We denote by I K (f) the group of all fractional ideals of K prime to f, P K (f) αo K α O K \{0} such that αo K is prime to f, P K,1 (f) αo K α O K \{0} such that αo K is prime to f and α 1 (mod f), and call the quotient group Cl(f) I K (f)/p K,1 (f) the ray class group of K modulo f. By the existence theorem of class field theory there is a unique finite abelian extension K f of K, called the ray class field of K modulo f, such that Gal(K f /K) Cl(f) via the Artin reciprocity map for f ([4, Chapter V, Theorem 9.1]). In particular, we call K OK the Hilbert class field of K and denote it also by H K. Proposition 3.1. Let E be the elliptic curve given in (1) and h E be the Weber function on E defined as in (2). Then, (i) H K is generated by j(e) j(τ K ) over K. (ii) If z 0 C is a generator of f 1 /O K as an O K -module, then h E (ϕ E (z 0 )) generates K f over H K. Proof. (i) See [9, Chapter 10, Theorem 1]. (ii) See [9, Chapter 10, Corollary to Theorem 7]. Remark 3.2. (i) Note that j(τ) gives rise to a bijection SL 2 (Z)\H C, and { 1728 if K Q( 1), j(τ K ) 0 if K Q( 3) ([1, Theorem 11.2 and p.261]). (ii) If [ r 1 ] Q 2 \Z 2, then one can readily attain h E (ϕ E (r 1 τ K + )) f (k) [ r 1 ] (τ K) where 1 if K Q( 1),Q( 3), k 2 if K Q( 1), 3 if K Q( 3).
5 Now, let f NO K for a positive integer N and P K,Z (f) be the subgroup of I K (f) given by P K,Z (f) αo K α O K \{0} such that αo K is prime to f and α a (mod f) for some integer a with gcd(n,a) 1. Let O [Nτ K,1] be the order of conductor N in K, I(O) be the group of all proper fractional O-ideals and P(O) be the subgroup of I(O) consisting of principal O-ideals. Since I(O)/P(O) I K (f)/p K,Z (f) ([1, Proposition 7.22]), there is a unique abelian extension K O of K, called the ring class field of the order O, such that Gal(K O /K) I K (f)/p K,Z (f) I(O)/P(O). As a consequence of the main theorem of complex multiplication we have K O K(j(O)) K(j(Nτ K )) ([9, Chapter 10, Theorem 5]). Since Gal(H K /K) Cl(O K ) I K (O K )/P K (O K ) I K (f)/p K (f), we obtain Gal(K f /K O ) P K,Z (f)/p K,1 (f). (6) Furthermore, the inclusions P K,1 (f) P K,Z (f) P K (f) imply H K K O K f. (7) 4 Fricke invariants For an integer N > 1, let V N {v Q 2 v has primitive denominator N}. We call a family {h v (τ)} v VN of functions in F N a Fricke family of level N if for every v V N h v (τ) is holomorphic on H, h v (τ) depends only on ±v (mod Z 2 ), h v (τ) γ h γ v(τ) for all γ Gal(Z/NZ)/{±I T 2 } Gal(F N /F 1 ), where γ T stands for the transpose of γ.
6 In particular, {f v (τ)} v VN and {g v (τ) 12N } v VN are both Fricke families of level N ([11, Theorem 6.6 (2)] and [8, Chapte, Proposition 1.3]). Let K be an imaginary quadratic field and f be a proper nontrivial ideal of O K. Let N (> 1) be the smallest positive integer in f, and let C Cl(f). Take an ideal c of O K in C and set fc 1 [ω 1,ω 2 ] for some ω 1,ω 2 C such that ω ω 1 /ω 2 H, 1 r 1 ω 1 + ω 2 for some r 1, (1/N)Z. With the above notations let {h v (τ)} v VN be a Fricke family of level N. We then define the Fricke invariant h f (C) modulo f at the class C by h f (C) h [ r 1 ] (ω). (8) This value depends only on f and C, not on the choices of c, ω 1 and ω 2 ([8, Chapter 11, 1]). Proposition 4.1. The Fricke invariant h f (C) lies in K f. And, we have the transformation formula h f (C) σ f(c ) h f (CC ) for any C Cl(f), where σ f : Cl(f) Gal(K f ) is the Artin reciprocity map for f. Proof. See [8, Chapter 11, Theorem 1.1]. Remark 4.2. (i) Jung et al. ([5]) recently showed that if K is different from Q( 1) and Q( 3), then f f (C) generates K f over H K. (ii) For simplicity, we mean by g f (C) the Fricke invariant obtained from the family {g v (τ) 12N } v VN, and call it the Siegel-Ramachandra invariant modulo f at C. (iii) Let f p f pep betheprime ideal factorizationoffandg p (O K /p ep ) /{α+p ep (O K /p ep ) α O K } for each p f. Schertz ([10]) first proved that if the exponent of G p is greater than 2 for every p f, (9) then g f (C) generates K f over K. And, Koo and Yoon further improved in [7] that one can replace the exponent of G p in the assumption (9) by the order of G p.
7 5 The second Kronecker s limit formula Let K be an imaginary quadratic field and f be a proper nontrivial ideal of O K. Let χ be a nonprincipal character of Cl(f). We define the Stickelberger element S f (χ) by S f (χ) χ(c)ln g f (C), (10) and the L-function L f (s,χ) on C by C Cl(f) L f (s,χ) a χ([a]) N K/Q (a) s, where a runs over all nontrivial ideals of O K prime to f and [a] means the class of Cl(f) containing a. Proposition 5.1. Let f χ be the conductor of χ and χ 0 be the primitive character of Cl(f χ ) corresponding to χ. If f χ O K, then we achieve L fχ (1,χ 0 ) πχ 0 ([γd K f χ ]) (1 χ 0 ([p])) 3N(f χ ) d K ω(f χ )T γ (χ 0 ) S f(χ), such that p f, p f χ p : prime ideals of O K where d K is the different of the extension K/Q, γ is an element of K such that γd K f χ is a nontrivial ideal of O K prime to f χ, N(f χ ) is the smallest positive integer in f χ, ω(f χ ) {α O K α 1 (mod f χ)} and T γ (χ 0 ) x+f χ (O K /f χ) χ 0 ([xo K ])e 2πiTrK/Q(xγ). Proof. See [12, Chapter II, Theorem 9] or [8, Chapter 11, Theorem 2.1]. Remark 5.2. (i) We have T γ (χ 0 ) N K/Q (f χ ) 0 ([12, p.107]). (ii) Since χ 0 is a nonprincipal character of Cl(f χ ), we get L fχ (1,χ 0 ) 0 ([4, Chapter V, Theorem 10.2]). (iii) If every prime ideal factor of f divides f χ, then we understand the Euler factor p f, p f χ (1 χ 0 ([p])) to be 1. 6 Generation of ring and ray class fields Let K be an imaginary quadratic field, f NO K for an integer N > 1 and O be the order of conductor N in K. Let E be the elliptic curve stated in (1) and h E be the Weber
8 function on E defined as in (2). By Proposition 3.1 (ii) and Remark 3.2 we know that h E (ϕ E (1/N)) generates K f over H K. However, in this section we shall show under some condition that one can pull the Hilbert class field H K down to the ground field K. For an intermediate field L of the extension K f /K we denote by Cl(K f /L) the subgroup of Cl(f) corresponding to Gal(K f /L) via the Artin reciprocity map σ f : Cl(f) Gal(K f /K). Lemma 6.1. Assume that K is different from Q( 1),Q( 3) and N is prime to 6. Then there is a character χ of Cl(f) satisfying the following properties: (C1) χ is trivial on Cl(K f /K O ). (C2) χ(c ) 1 for any chosen C Cl(f)\Cl(K f /K O ) (if any). (C3) Every prime ideal factor of f divides the conductor f χ of χ. Proof. See [6, Lemma 3.4 and Remark 4.5]. Theorem 6.2. With the same assumptions as in Lemma 6.1, let ξ N h E (ϕ E (2/N)) h E (ϕ E (1/N)) which lies in K f by (3). Then its relative norm N Kf /K O (ξ N ) generates K O over K. Proof. Let F K(N Kf /K O (ξ N )) which is an abelian extension of K as a subfield of K O. Suppose on the contrary that F is properly contained in K O. Then we can take a class C in Cl(K f /F)\Cl(K f /K O ). Let χ be a character of Cl(f) satisfying the conditions (C1), (C2), (C3) in Lemma 6.1. By (C1) and (C2) we note that χ viewed as a character of Cl(K f /F)/Cl(K f /K O ) is nontrivial. Furthermore, it follows from Proposition 5.1, (C3) and Remark 5.2 that S f (χ) 0. (11) On the other hand, since N is prime to 6, we may regard C 2 [2O K ] and C 3 [3O K ] as elements of Cl(K f /K O ) by (6). Let C 0 be the identity class of Cl(f). Then we deduce that ξn 12N (f [ ] 0 (τ K ) f [ ] 0 (τ K )) 12N by Remark 3.2 (ii) 2/N 1/N ( ) j(τk ) 2 (j(τ K ) 1728) 3 2N g [ ] 0 (τ K ) 12N 3/N g [ ] 0 (τ K ) 24N g [ ] by Lemma (τ K ) 12N 2/N 1/N
9 ( j(τk ) 2 (j(τ K ) 1728) ) 2N g f (C 3 ) g f (C 2 ) 2 g f (C 0 ) by definition (8). (12) Now that the assumption K Q( 1),Q( 3) implies that j(τ K ) 0,1728 by Remark 3.2 (i), this value is nonzero. IfχistrivialonCl(K f /H K ), thenχcanbeviewedasacharacterofcl(f)/cl(k f /H K ) Gal(H K /K) Cl(O K ). This yields f χ O K, which contradicts (C3). Thus there exists a class C Cl(K f /H K ) such that χ(c ) 1. Now, consider the element x of F given by N Kf /K x O (ξ N ) 12N ( ) (N Kf /K O (ξ N ) 12N ) N ξn 12N σ f(c ) K f /K O. (ξn 12N)σ f(c ) Since σ f (C ) leaves H K K(j(τ K )) fixed, we attain by (12) and Proposition 4.1 that ( ( ) ) g f (C 3 ) gf (C 2 ) 2 σf (C g f (C 0 ) ) x N Kf /K O g f (C 2 ) 2 g f (C 0 ) g f (C 3 ) ( ) g f (C 3 ) g f (C 2 C ) 2 g f (C ) N Kf /K O. g f (C 2 ) 2 g f (C 0 ) g f (C 3 C ) Set y so that x N Kf /K O (y). We then derive that χ(c)ln y σ f(c) C Cl(f) g f (C 3 ) g f (C 2 C ) 2 g f (C ) g f (C 2 ) 2 g f (C 0 ) g f (C 3 C ) χ(c) ln g f (C 3 C) g f (C 2 C C) 2 g f (C C) g f (C 2 C) 2 g f (C) g f (C 3 C C) by Proposition 4.1 C Cl(f) (χ(c 3 ) 2χ(C 2 ) 1)(1 χ(c )) χ(c)ln g f (C) 2(1 χ(c ))S f (χ) C Cl(f) by definition (10), (C2) and the fact C 2,C 3 Cl(K f /K O ). (13) On the other hand, we know that (1 χ(c )) is nonzero. And, we also get that χ(c)ln y σf(c) C Cl(f) E Cl(f) E (mod Cl(K f /F)) E Cl(f) E (mod Cl(K f /F)) D Cl(K f /F) C Cl(K f /K O ) D (mod Cl(K f /K O )) χ(e) D Cl(K f /F) D (mod Cl(K f /K O )) χ(d) χ(cde)ln y σ f(cde) C Cl(K f /K O ) ln y σ f(c)σ f (D)σ f (E) by (C1)
10 E Cl(f) E (mod Cl(K f /F)) E Cl(f) E (mod Cl(K f /F)) χ(e) D Cl(K f /F) D (mod Cl(K f /K O )) χ(e)ln x σ f(e) χ(d)ln x σ f(d)σ f (E) since x N Kf /K O (y) D Cl(K f /F) D (mod Cl(K f /K O )) χ(d) by the fact x F 0 because χ as a character of Cl(K f /F)/Cl(K f /K O ) is nontrivial, from which we obtain S f (χ) 0 by (13). But, this contradicts (11). Therefore, we conclude F K O as desired. Remark 6.3. We see that ξ N h E (ϕ E (2/N)) h E (ϕ E (1/N)) f [ ] 0 (τ K ) f [ ] 0 (τ K ) by Remark 3.2 (ii) 2/N 1/N f f ([2O K ]) f f ([O K ]) by definition (8). (14) On the other hand, we have the isomorphism (Z/NZ) /{±1} Cl(K f /K O ) t [to K ] ([2, Proposition 3.8]). Thus we can express N Kf /K O (ξ N ) explicitly as N Kf /K O (ξ N ) t (Z/NZ) /{±1} t (Z/NZ) /{±1} (f [ 0 t (Z/NZ) 2t/N /{±1} t (Z/NZ) /{±1} (f f ([2O K ]) f f ([O K ])) σ f([to K ]) by (14) (f f ([2tO K ]) f f ([to K ])) by Proposition 4.1 ] (τ K ) f [ ] 0 (τ K )) by definition (8) t/n (h E (ϕ E (2t/N)) h E (ϕ E (t/n))) by Remark 3.2 (ii). Corollary 6.4. If N is prime to 6, then h E (ϕ E (1/N)) generates K f over K. Proof. If K Q( 1) or Q( 3), then the assertion holds by Proposition 3.1 (ii) and Remark 3.2 (i). Thus we let K Q( 1),Q( 3), and set L K(h E (ϕ E (1/N))). Since L is an abelian extension of K as a subfield of K f by (3), it also contains h E (ϕ E (1/N)) σ f([2o K ]). Here, we note that since N is prime to 6, Cl(f) contains the class [2O K ]. We find that h E (ϕ E (1/N)) σ f([2o K ]) f [ ] 0 (τ K ) σ f([2o K ]) 1/N by Remark 3.2 (ii)
11 f f ([O K ]) σ f([2o K ]) by definition (8) f f ([2O K ]) by Proposition 4.1 f [ ] 0 (τ K ) by definition (8) 2/N h E (ϕ E (2/N)) by Remark 3.2 (ii). Thus we deduce that L K(ξ N,h E (ϕ E (1/N))) where ξ N h E (ϕ E (2/N)) h E (ϕ E (1/N)) K(N Kf /K O (ξ N ),h E (ϕ E (1/N))) K O (h E (ϕ E (1/N))) by Theorem 6.2 K f by (7) and Proposition 3.1 (ii). Therefore, we achieve that L K f. References [1] D. A. Cox, Primes of the form x 2 +ny 2 : Fermat, Class Field, and Complex Multiplication, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, [2] I. S. Eum, J. K.
