22 course codes: AAR AAR4851 ARCHITECTURAL ENTRPRENEURSHIP URBAN DEVELOPMENT AAR4540/4851 Course Content The course deals with urban- and project-development from early research and concept phase from identifying possible triggers of change in an urban context through project definition, and the development of a project proposal to the design and presentation of the trigger project. The course gives a particular emphasis on the architect s competence, contribution and role in the resource-chain of project development. Special emphasis will be given to the mapping, analysis, programming and development and communication of concepts and problem solutions. This emphasis comprises internal and external project criteria as well as the study and evaluation of the interplay between economy and ecology in the project. Training will be given in the use of ICT, 3D, multi-media tools and visualization and webdesign. The use of these tools will be required during all phases of the course, and the final project will be submitted on a multi-media platform. Communication skills will be trained throughout the course. Learning Outcome The course will give a thorough knowledge of the role and scope of architecture in complex development projects. The student will get basic knowledge of the major framework around- and the strategic potential of real estate-, project development and architectural entrepreneurship. The goal is to understand how the architect can take an active role not only in designing a project, but in conceiving, defining and programming it. The student will be given the tools and the skills; the competence of communicating the above aspects of project development to the actors of project development; non-architects like politicians, investors, users, neighbors and the general public. The student will learn how to assess alternative solutions and interventions based on a thorough understanding of urban, cultural, social and economic context, and how to apply relevant methods and tools needed to do this. Teaching Methods and Activities Lectures, seminars, workshops. A main emphasis will be given to research and data collection adopting the methodology developed in the Urban Trigger Group leading students identify interesting trigger projects. Exercises and studio work will be done as teamwork. Required Activities The class will visit Fauske once in the beginning of the semester to become familiar with the city, its ambitions and its challenges. At the end of the semester the class will return to Fauske to present its proposals to the local authorities and community. The Municipality of Fauske will be the host of the visits. Prerequisites At least three years of basic level (BArch) education in architecture or equivalent major. The course is required to be taken in combination with AAR4851 Urban Triggers.
