No description of the experiment is required. 1 You are to identify the diameter of a wire and the materia from which it is made. 1 (a) Wire is manufactured in certain diameters under a system known as the Engish Standard Wire Gauge, each diameter of wire being identified by a particuar SWG number. Tabe 1 shows the diameter of wires with certain SWG numbers. Tabe 1 SWG number diameter / mm (a) (i) You are provided with about 20 cm of oose wire. 4 4 1 (b) You are provided with a circuit that incudes a wire X, mounted on a ruer between two terminas. The wire is connected in series with a 2.2 Ω resistor, a power suppy and a switch S. The materia from which X has been made can be identified by measuring its resistance per unit ength, ie the resistance of 1 metre of the wire. Use your answers to part (a) and part (b) and the information contained in Tabe 2 to determine the materia from which X has been made. 7 You are to determine the resistance of an unknown resistor using the circuit shown in Figure 3. Connect the 1 kω resistor between cips C1 and C2 and cose switch S. Rotate the contro knob of the rotary potentia divider fuy anti-cockwise. Check that the votmeter shows a negative reading. Read and record in Tabe 3 beow, the new position, θ, of the contro knob against the scae. 2 (a) (iii) Remove the 1 kω resistor from cips C1 and C2 then repeat the procedure in part (a)(ii) to read vaues of θ when each of the remaining resistors of known resistance R are connected, in turn, between cips C1 and C2. Record the vaues of θ for each of these resistors in Tabe 3 then compete the right-hand coumn to show the corresponding vaues of (θ θ 0 ). When you have competed these readings remove the resistor from C1 and C2 and open switch S.
