1 THE 1771 AMELIA COUNTY, VA PPTLS INCOMPLETE! Below is a indexed transcription of the extant Personal Property Tax Lists for Amelia County for the year 1771, transcribed from LDS FHL # The microfilm contains only one list for this particular year, the list from Nottoway parish (designated below as N). The name of the person taking the list is not included on any image of this tax list. This list is VERY dark, and difficult to read, despite their use of negative (white writing against a black background) photography, and imaging each page with several camera settings. I ve done my best to make out the names, and have marked questionable names with question marks [?]. On this list, the slaves are listed by name. I have not listed them here, but it may be possible, by comparing with lists prior to and following this one, to identify men whose names are uncertain on this list, and using slaves + acres to match these men to their entries on other lists. EXPLANATION OF COLUMN HEADINGS NAME: the name of the person paying the Tax LIST: the parish where these individuals lived; this list is only for Nottoway Parish, that part of Amelia which later would become Nottoway Co. (Evidently, the other Parish Tax Lists did not survive.) OTHER WHITE MALE TITHES: The names of other men above the age of 21, whose tax was paid by the taxpayer.
