1 CONGRUENCES FOR TRACES OF SINGULAR MODULI ROBERT OSBURN Abstract. We extend a resut of Ahgren and Ono [1] on congruences for traces of singuar modui of eve 1 to traces defined in terms of Hauptmodu associated to certain groups of genus 0 of higher eves. 1. Introduction Let j(z denote the usua eiptic moduar function on SL 2 (Z with q-expansion (q := e 2πiz j(z = q q q 2 +. The vaues of j(z at imaginary quadratic arguments in the upper haf of the compex pane are known as singuar modui. Singuar modui are important agebraic integers which generate ring cass fied extensions of imaginary quadratic fieds (Theorem 11.1 in [5], are reated to supersinguar eiptic curves ([1], and to Borcherds products of moduar forms ([2], [3]. Let d denote a positive integer congruent to 0 or 3 moduo 4 so that d is the discriminant of an order in an imaginary quadratic fied. Denote by Q d the set of positive definite integra binary quadratic forms Q(x, y = ax 2 + bxy + cy 2 with discriminant d = b 2 4ac. To each Q Q d, et α Q be the unique compex number in the upper haf pane which is a root of Q(x, 1; the singuar moduus j(α Q depends ony on the equivaence cass of Q under the action of Γ := P SL 2 (Z. Now what about divisibiity properties of t(d as d varies? In this direction, Ahgren and Ono [1] recenty proved the foowing resut which shows that these traces t(d satisfy congruences based on the factorization of primes in certain imaginary quadratic fieds. Theorem 1.2. If d is a positive integer for which an odd prime spits in Q( d, then t( 2 d 0 (mod. Recenty, Kim [11] and Zagier [15] defined an anaogous trace of singuar modui by repacing the j-function by a moduar function of higher eve, in particuar by the Hauptmodu associated to other groups of genus 0. Let Γ 0 (N be the group generated by Γ 0 (N and a Atkin-Lehner invoutions W e for e N, i.e., e is a positive divisor of N for which gcd(e, N/e = 1. There are ony finitey many vaues of N for which Γ 0 (N is of genus 0 (see [8], [9], or [14]. In particuar, there are ony finitey many prime vaues of N. For such a prime p, et jp be the corresponding Hauptmodu. For these primes p, Kim and Zagier define a trace t (p (d (see Section 3 beow in terms of singuar vaues of jp. The goa of this paper is to prove that the same type of congruence hods for t (p (d, namey Theorem 1.3. Let p be a prime for which Γ 0 (p is of genus 0. If d is a positive integer such that d is congruent to a square moduo 4p and for which an odd prime p spits in Q( d, then t (p ( 2 d 0 mod. 2. Preiminaries on Moduar and Jacobi forms We first reca some facts about haf-integra weight moduar ( forms (see [12], [13]. Let J k,n denote the space of Jacobi forms of weight k and index N on SL 2 (Z. By Theorem 2.2 in [6], the coefficient c(n, r depends ony on 4Nn r 2 and r mod 2N. By definition c(n, r = 0 uness 4Nn

Traces Let Γ 0 (N be the group generated by Γ 0 (N and a Atkin-Lehner invoutions W e for e N, that is, e is a positive divisor ( of N for which gcd(e, N/e = 1. In particuar, if we et S denote the set of prime vaues for such N, then S = {2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 41, 47, 59, 71}. Note that Γ 0 (p acts on Q d,p,β. Assume that d is not divisibe as a discriminant by the square of any prime dividing p, i.e. not divisibe by p 2. As the dimension of J 2,p is zero, we have that for every 2 integer d 0 such that d is congruent to a square moduo 4p, there exists a unique f d,p M + 1 (Γ 0 (4p with Fourier expansion 2 f d,p (z = q d + A(D, dq D. 0<D 0,1 (mod 4 An expicit construction of f d,p can be found in the appendix of [10] and the uniqueness of f d,p foows from the discussion at the end of Section 2 in [10]. The foowing resut reates the Fourier coefficients A(1, d and B(d and shows that the traces t (p (d are Fourier coefficients of a neary hoomorphic Jacobi form of weight 2 and index p (see Theorem 8 in [15] or Lemma 3.5 and Coroary 3.6 in [11]. Proof of Theorem 1.3 Proof. The proof requires the study of Hecke operators T k+ 1 2,4p ( 2 on the forms g p (z and f d,p (z. (1 Zagier actuay defined t (N (d and proved part (ii of Theorem 3.2 for a N such that Γ 0 (N is of genus 0 (see Section 8 in [15]. One might be abe to prove part (i of Theorem 3.2 in the case N is squarefree. If so, then a congruence, simiar to Theorem 1.3, shoud hod for t (N (d, N squarefree. If N is not squarefree, then C. Kim has kindy pointed out part (i of Theorem 3.2 does not hod. For exampe, if N = 4 and d = 7, one can construct f 7,4 (see the appendix in [11] and compute that f 7,4 = q 7 55q + 0q q 9 +. Thus A(1, 7 = 55. But B(7 = 23 (see Remark 3.1. (2 We shoud note that Theorem 1.3 is an extension of the simpest case of Theorem 1 in [1]. Ono and Ahgren have aso proven congruences for t(d which invove ramified or inert primes in quadratic fieds. In fact, they prove that a positive proportion of primes yied congruences for t(d (see parts (2 and (3 of Theorem 1 in [1]. It woud be interesting to see if such congruences hod for t (p (d or t (N (d. (3 The Monster M is the argest of the sporadic simpe groups of order Ogg [14] noticed that the primes dividing the order of M are exacty those in the set S. The monster M acts on a graded vector agebra V = V 1 n 1 V n (see Frenke, Lepowsky, and Meurman [7] for the construction. For any eement g M, et T r(g V n denote the trace of g acting on V n for each n. Then T r(g V 1 = 1 and T r(g V n Z for every n 1. The Thompson series is defined by: T g (z = q 1 + n 1 T r(g V n q n. The authors in [4] study Thompson series evauated at imaginary quadratic arguments, i.e. singuar modui of Thompson series. It is possibe to define a trace of singuar modui of Thompson series.
