Spectra of the subdivision-vertex and subdivision-edge coronae Pengli Lu and Yufang Miao School of Computer and Communication Lanzhou University of Technology Lanzhou, , Gansu, P.R. China arxiv: v2 [math.co] 27 Jul 2013 Abstract The subdivision graph SG of a graph G is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of G. Let G 1 and G 2 be two vertex disjoint graphs. The subdivision-vertex corona of G 1 and G 2, denoted by G 1 G 2, is the graph obtained from SG 1 and V G 1 copies of G 2, all vertex-disjoint, by joining the ith vertex of V G 1 to every vertex in the ith copy of G 2. The subdivision-edge corona of G 1 and G 2, denoted by G 1 G 2, is the graph obtained from SG 1 and IG 1 copies of G 2, all vertex-disjoint, by joining the ith vertex of IG 1 to every vertex in the ith copy of G 2, where IG 1 is the set of inserted vertices of SG 1. In this paper we determine the adjacency spectra, the Laplacian spectra and the signless Laplacian spectra of G 1 G 2 respectively, G 1 G 2 in terms of the corresponding spectra of G 1 and G 2. As applications, the results on the spectra of G 1 G 2 respectively, G 1 G 2 enable us to construct infinitely many pairs of cospectral graphs. The adjacency spectra of G 1 G 2 respectively, G 1 G 2 help us to construct many infinite families of integral graphs. By using the Laplacian spectra, we also obtain the number of spanning trees and Kirchhoff index of G 1 G 2 and G 1 G 2, respectively. Keywords: Spectrum, Cospectral graphs, Integral graphs, Spanning trees, Kirchhoff index, Subdivision-vertex corona, Subdivision-edge corona AMS Subject Classification 2010: 05C50 1 Introduction We only consider undirected and simple graphs throughout this paper. Let G = V G, EG be a graph with vertex set V G = {v 1, v 2,..., v n } and edge set EG. The adjacency matrix of G, denoted by AG, is the n n matrix whose i, j-entry is 1 if v i and v j are adjacent in G and 0 otherwise. Let d G v i be the degree of vertex v i in G. Denote DG to be the diagonal matrix with diagonal entries d G v 1,..., d G v n. The Laplacian matrix of G and the signless Laplacian matrix of G are defined as LG = DG AG and QG = DG + AG, respectively. Let φag; x = detxi n AG, or simply φag, be the adjacency characteristic polynomial of G. Similarly, denote φlg respectively, φqg as the Laplacian respectively, signless Laplacian characteristic polynomial. Denote the eigenvalues of AG, LG and QG by λ 1 G λ 2 G λ n G, 0 = µ 1 G µ 2 G µ n G, ν 1 G ν 2 G ν n G, respectively. The eigenvalues together with the multiplicities of AG, LG and QG are called the A-spectrum, L-spectrum and Q-spectrum of G, respectively. Graphs with the same A-spectra respectively, L-spectra, Q-spectra are called A-cospectral 1
respectively, L-cospectral, Q-cospectral graphs. For more terminologies not defined here, the readers can refer to [2, 6, 7]. The corona of two graphs was first introduced by R. Frucht and F. Harary in [9] with the goal of constructing a graph whose automorphism group is the wreath product of the two component automorphism groups. It is known that the A-spectra respectively, L-spectra, Q- spectra of the corona of any two graphs can be expressed by that of the two factor graphs [1, 5, 18, 19]. Similarly, the A-spectra respectively, L-spectra, Q-spectra of the edge corona [13] of two graphs, which is a variant of the corona operation, were completely computed in [5, 13, 19]. Another variant of the corona operation, the neighbourhood corona, was introduced in [10] recently. In [10], the A-spectrum of the neighbourhood corona of an arbitrary graph and a regular graph was given in terms of that of the two factor graphs. The author also gave the L-spectrum of the neighbourhood corona of a regular graph and an arbitrary graph. The subdivision graph SG of a graph G is the graph obtained by inserting a new vertex into every edge of G [7]. We denote the set of such new vertices by IG. In [14], two new graph operations based on subdivision graphs: subdivision-vertex join and subdivision-edge join were introduced, and the A-spectra of subdivision-vertex join respectively, subdivision-edge join of two regular graphs were computed in terms of that of the two graphs. More work on their L-spectra and Q-spectra were presented in [16]. Meanwhile, X. Liu and P. Lu defined two new graph operations based on subdivision graphs: subdivision-vertex neighbourhood corona and subdivision-edge neighbourhood corona [17]. The authors determined the A-spectrum, the L-spectrum and the Q-spectrum of the subdivision-vertex neighbourhood corona respectively, subdivision-edge neighbourhood corona of a regular graph and an arbitrary graph. Motivated by the work above, we define two new graph operations based on subdivision graphs as follows. Definition 1.1. The subdivision-vertex corona of two vertex-disjoint graphs G 1 and G 2, denoted by G 1 G 2, is the graph obtained from SG 1 and V G 1 copies of G 2, all vertex-disjoint, by joining the ith vertex of V G 1 to every vertex in the ith copy of G 2. Definition 1.2. The subdivision-edge corona of two vertex-disjoint graphs G 1 and G 2, denoted by G 1 G 2, is the graph obtained from SG 1 and IG 1 copies of G 2, all vertex-disjoint, by joining the ith vertex of IG 1 to every vertex in the ith copy of G 2. Let P n denote a path on n vertices. Figure 1 depicts the subdivision-vertex corona P 4 P 2 and subdivision-edge corona P 4 P 2, respectively. Note that if G 1 is a graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges and G 2 is a graph on n 2 vertices and m 2 edges, then the subdivision-vertex corona G 1 G 2 has n n 2 + m 1 vertices and 2m 1 + n 1 n 2 + m 2 edges, and the subdivision-edge corona G 1 G 2 has m n 2 + n 1 vertices and m n 2 + m 2 edges. In this paper, we will determine the A-spectra, the L-spectra and the Q-spectra of G 1 G 2 respectively, G 1 G 2 with the help of the coronal of a matrix and the Kronecker product. The M-coronal Γ M x of an n n matrix M is defined [5, 18] to be the sum of the entries of the matrix xi n M 1, that is, Γ M x = 1 T n xi n M 1 1 n. where 1 n denotes the column vector of size n with all the entries equal one. It is well known [5, 2
P4 P2 P4 P2 P4 P2 Fig. 1: An example of subdivision-vertex and subdivision-edge coronae. Proposition 2] that, if M is an n n matrix with each row sum equal to a constant t, then Γ M x = n x t. 1.1 In particular, since for any graph G 2 with n 2 vertices, each row sum of LG 2 is equal to 0, we have Γ LG2 x = n 2 /x. 1.2 The Kronecker product A B of two matrices A = a ij m n and B = b ij p q is the mp nq matrix obtained from A by replacing each element a ij by a ij B. This is an associative operation with the property that A B T = A T B T and A BC D = AC BD whenever the products AC and BD exist. The latter implies A B 1 = A 1 B 1 for nonsingular matrices A and B. Moreover, if A and B are n n and p p matrices, then deta B = deta p detb n. The reader is referred to [12] for other properties of the Kronecker product not mentioned here. The paper is organized as follows. In Section 2, we compute the A-spectra, the L-spectra and the Q-spectra of the subdivision-vertex corona G 1 G 2 for a regular graph G 1 and an arbitrary graph G 2 see Theorems 2.1, 2.7, Section 3 mainly investigates the A-spectra, the L- spectra and the Q-spectra of the subdivision-edge corona G 1 G 2 for a regular graph G 1 and an arbitrary graph G 2 see Theorems 3.1, 3.7, As we will see in Corollaries 2.6, 2.8, 2.13, 3.4, 3.10, 3.13, our results on the spectra of G 1 G 2 and G 1 G 2 enable us to construct infinitely many pairs of cospectral graphs. Our constructions of infinite families of integral graphs are stated in Corollaries 2.4, 2.5, 3.5, 3.6. In Corollaries 2.9, 2.10, 3.8, 3.9, we compute the number of spanning trees and the Kirchhoff index of G 1 G 2 respectively, G 1 G 2 for a regular graph G 1 and an arbitrary graph G 2. 2 Spectra of subdivision-vertex coronae Let G 1 be an arbitrary graphs on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary graphs on n 2 vertices, respectively. We first label the vertices of G 1 G 2 as follows. Let V G 1 = {v 1, v 2,..., v n1 }, IG 1 = {e 1, e 2,..., e m1 } and V G 2 = {u 1, u 2,..., u n2 }. For i = 1, 2,..., n 1, let u i 1, ui 2,..., ui n 2 denote the vertices of the ith copy of G 2, with the understanding that u i j is { the copy of u j for each j. Denote W j = u 1 j, u2 j,..., un 1 j V G 1 IG 1 [W 1 W 2 W n2 ] } for j = 1, 2,..., n 2. Then 3
is a partition of V G 1 G 2. It is clear that the degrees of the vertices of G 1 G 2 are: d G1 G 2 v i = n 2 + d G1 v i for i = 1, 2,..., n 1, d G1 G 2 e i = 2 for i = 1, 2,..., m 1, and d G1 G 2 u i j = d G 2 u j + 1 for i = 1, 2,..., n 1, j = 1, 2,..., n A-spectra of subdivision-vertex coronae Theorem 2.1. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary φ AG 1 G 2 ; x = x m 1 n1 φag 2 ; x n 1 n1 x 2 Γ AG2 xx r 1 λ i G 1. Proof. Let R be the incidence matrix [2] of G 1. Then, with respect to the partition V G 1 IG 1 [W 1 W 2 W n2 ] of V G 1 G 2, the adjacency matrix of G 1 G 2 can be written as 0 n1 n 1 R 1 T n 2 I n1 AG 1 G 2 = R T 0 m1 m 1 0 m1 n 1 n 2, 1 n2 I n1 0 n1 n 2 m 1 AG 2 I n1 where 0 s t denotes the s t matrix with all entries equal to zero, I n is the identity matrix of order n. Thus the adjacency characteristic polynomial of G 1 G 2 is given by xi n1 R 1 T n 2 I n1 φ AG 1 G 2 = det R T xi m1 0 m1 n 1 n 2 1 n2 I n1 0 n1 n 2 m 1 xi n2 AG 2 I n1 = detxi n2 AG 2 I n1 dets, where S = = xin1 R 1 T n2 I n1 xi R T n2 AG 2 I n1 1 1 n2 I n1 0 n1 n 2 m 1 xi m1 0 m1 n 1 n 2 x ΓAG2 x I n1 R R T xi m1 is the Schur complement [21] of xi n2 AG 2 I n1. It is well known [7] that RR T = AG 1 + r 1 I n1. Thus, the result follows from and det xi n2 AG 2 I n1 = detxi n2 AG 2 n 1 deti n1 n 2 = φ AG 2 n 1 dets = x x m1 det ΓAG2x I 1 n1 x RRT = n 1 x m1 x Γ AG2 x r 1 x 1 x λ ig 1 n 1 = x m 1 n1 x 2 Γ AG2 xx r 1 λ i G 1. 4
Theorem 2.1 enables us to compute the A-spectra of many subdivision-vertex coronae, if we can determine the AG 2 -coronal Γ AG2 x. Fortunately, we have known the AG 2 -coronal for some graph G 2. For example, if G 2 is an r 2 -regular graph on n 2 vertices, then [5, 18] Γ AG2 x = n 2 /x r 2, and if G 2 = Kp,q which is the complete bipartite graph with p, q 1 vertices in the two parts of its bipartition, then [18] Γ AG2 x = p + qx + 2pq/x 2 pq. Thus, Theorem 2.1 implies the following results immediately. Corollary 2.2. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an r 2 -regular the A-spectrum of G 1 G 2 consists of: a λ i G 2, repeated n 1 times, for each i = 2, 3,..., n 2 ; b 0, repeated m 1 n 1 times; c three roots of the equation for each j = 1, 2,..., n 1. x 3 r 2 x 2 r 1 + λ j G 1 + n 2 x + r 2 r 1 + λ j G 1 = 0 Corollary 2.3. Let G be an r-regular graph on n vertices and m edges with m n, and let p, q 1 be integers. Then the A-spectrum of G K p,q consists of: a 0, repeated m + p + q 3n times; b four roots of the equation for each j = 1, 2,..., n. x 4 pq + p + q + r + λ j Gx 2 2pqx + pqr + λ j G = 0 A graph whose A-spectrum consists of entirely of integers is called an A-integral graph. The question of Which graphs have A-integral spectra? was first posed by F. Harary and A.J. Schwenk in 1973 see [8], with the immediate remark that the general problem appears challenging and intractable. Although not only the number of A-integral graphs is infinite, but also one can find them in all classes of graphs and among graphs of all orders, A-integral graphs are very rare and difficult to be found. For more properties and constructions on A-integral graphs, please refer to an excellent survey [3]. It is well known that the complete graph K n and complete bipartite graph K n,n are A- integral graphs. In the following, with the help of K n and K n,n, we will give two constructions of infinite families of A-integral graphs by using the subdivision-vertex coronae. The complement G of a graph G is the graph with the same vertex set as G such that two vertices are adjacent in G if and only if they are not adjacent in G. Note that the complete graph K n is n 1-regular with the A-spectrum n 1 1, 1 n 1, where a b denotes that the multiplicity of a is b. Then, by Corollary 2.2, the A-spectrum of K n1 K n2 consists of ± 2n1 2 + n 2 1, ± n1 2 + n 2 n1 1, 0 n 1 n 2 1+m 1, which implies that K n1 K n2 is A- integral if and only if 2n n 2 and n n 2 are integers. Now we present our first construction of an infinite family of A-integral graphs see Figure 2 for an example. 5
Fig. 2: K 5 K 1 with A-spectrum ±3 1, ±2 4, Corollary 2.4. K n1 K n2 is A-integral if and only if n 1 = s 2 h 2 and n 2 = 2h 2 s for h = 2, 3,..., s = 3, 4,..., and h 2 < s 2 < 2h Proof. From the above statement, K n1 K n2 is A-integral if and only if 2n n 2 and n n 2 are integers. Let 2n n 2 = s and n n 2 = h, where s, h are nonnegative integers. Solving these two equations, we obtain that n 1 = s 2 h 2, n 2 = 2h 2 s Since n 1 > 0 and n 2 > 0, we have that h 2, s 3 and h 2 < s 2 < 2h Notice that the complete bipartite graph K n,n is n-regular with the A-spectrum ±n 1, 0 2n 2. By Corollary 2.2, the A-spectrum of K n1,n 1 K n2 consists of ± 2n 1 + n 2 1, ± n1 + n 2 2n 1 2, ± n2 1, 0 2n 1 n 2 2n 1 +m 1, which implies that K n1,n 1 K n2 is A-integral if and only if 2n 1 + n 2, n1 + n 2 and n 2 are integers. Here, we present our second construction of an infinite family of A-integral graphs. Corollary 2.5. K n1,n 1 K n2 s = 1, 2, 3,..., t = 1, 2, 3,.... is A-integral if n 1 = 4st 2 2s 2 + 3s + 1 and n 2 = t 2 2s for Proof. From the above statement, K n1,n 1 K n2 is A-integral if and only if 2n 1 + n 2, n1 + n 2 and n 2 are integers. Let 2n 1 + n 2 = a, n 1 + n 2 = b and n 2 = c, where a, b, c are nonnegative integers. Solving these equations, we obtain that n 1 = a 2 b 2 and n 2 = 2b 2 a 2 = c 2. Notice that 2b 2 a 2 = c 2 is equivalent to a + ba b = b + cb c. Let u = a + b, v = a b, x = b + c and y = b c. Then we obtain that uv = xy and u v = x + y. Combining these two equations and eliminating u, we have 2v 2 = x vy v. Let x v = 2vs and sy v = v for s = 1, 2,.... Then x = 2vs + v = b + c and y = v s + v = b c. Thus, a = b + v = vs + 2v + v 2s, b = vs + v + v 2s and c = vs v 2s. Let v = 2st for t = 1, 2,.... Then we have a = 2s 2 t+4st+t, b = 2s 2 t+2st+t and c = 2s 2 t t, which imply that n 1 = 4st 2 2s 2 +3s+1 and n 2 = c 2 = t 2 2s As stated in the following corollary of Theorem 2.1, the subdivision-vertex corona enables us to obtain infinitely many pairs of A-cospectral graphs. Corollary 2.6. a If G 1 and G 2 are A-cospectral regular graphs, and H is an arbitray graph, then G 1 H and G 2 H are A-cospectral. b If G is a regular graph, and H 1 and H 2 are A-cospectral graphs with Γ AH1 x = Γ AH2 x, then G H 1 and G H 2 are A-cospectral. 6
2.2 L-spectra of subdivision-vertex coronae Theorem 2.7. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary n 2 φ LG 1 G 2 ; x = x 2 m 1 n1 x 1 µi G 2 n 1 i=2 n 1 x r 1 + n 2 x r 1 + µ i G 1 + 2n 2 x µ i G 1. Proof. Let R be the incidence matrix [2] of G 1. Since G 1 is an r 1 -regular graph, we have DG 1 = r 1 I n1. Then the Laplacian matrix of G 1 G 2 can be written as r 1 + n 2 I n1 R 1 T n 2 I n1 LG 1 G 2 = R T 2I m1 0 m1 n 1 n 2, 1 n2 I n1 0 n1 n 2 m 1 LG 2 + I n2 I n1 Thus the Laplacian characteristic polynomial of G 1 G 2 is given by x r 1 n 2 I n1 R 1 T n 2 I n1 φ LG 1 G 2 = det R T x 2I m1 0 m1 n 1 n 2 1 n2 I n1 0 n1 n 2 m 1 x 1I n2 LG 2 I n1 = detx 1I n2 LG 2 I n1 dets, where S = x r1 n 2 Γ LG2 x 1 I n1 R R T x 2I m1 is the Schur complement [21] of x 1I n2 LG 2 I n1. Notice that λ i G 1 = r 1 µ i G 1, i = 1, 2,..., n 1. Then the result follows from det n 2 x 1I n2 LG 2 I n1 = x 1 µi G 2 n 1, and x dets = x 2 m1 det r1 n 2 Γ LG2x 1 I 1 n1 x 2 RRT n 1 = x 2 m1 x r 1 n 2 Γ LG2 x 1 λ ig 1 + r 1 x 2 n 1 = x 2 m 1 n1 x r 1 + n 2 + Γ LG2 x 1x + 2n 2 + 2Γ LG2 x 1 + µ i G 1. n 1 = x 1 n1 x 2 m 1 n1 x r 1 + n 2 x r 1 + µ i G 1 + 2n 2 x µ i G 1. 7
Theorem 2.7 helps us to construct infinitely many pairs of L-cospectral graphs. Corollary 2.8. a If G 1 and G 2 are L-cospectral regular graphs, and H is an arbitrary graph, then G 1 H and G 2 H are L-cospectral. b If G is a regular graph, and H 1 and H 2 are L-cospectral graphs, then G H 1 and G H 2 are L-cospectral. Let tg denote the number of spanning trees of G. It is well known [6] that if G is a connected graph on n vertices with Laplacian spectrum 0 = µ 1 G < µ 2 G µ n G, then tg = µ 2G µ n G. n By Theorem 2.7, we can readily obtain the following result. Corollary 2.9. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary tg 1 G 2 = 2m 1 n1 2 + r 1 + 2n 2 n 1 tg 1 n 2 i=2 µi G n 1. n 1 + m 1 + n 1 n 2 The Kirchhoff index of a graph G, denoted by KfG, is defined as the sum of resistance distances between all pairs of vertices [4,15]. At almost exactly the same time, Gutman et al. [11] and Zhu et al. [20] proved that the Kirchhoff index of a connected graph G with n n 2 vertices can be expressed as n 1 KfG = n µ i G, where µ 2 G,..., µ n G are the non-zero Laplacian eigenvalues of G. Theorem 2.7 implies the following result. Corollary Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary KfG 1 G 2 = n n 2 + m 1 m 1 + n r 1 + n r 1 + 2n 2 KfG r 1 + 2n 2 n 1 i=2 2.3 Q-spectra of subdivision-vertex coronae n 2 i=2 n µ i G 2 Theorem Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary n 2 φ QG 1 G 2 ; x = x 2 m 1 n1 x 1 νi G 2 n 1 n 1 x r 1 + n 2 + Γ QG2 x 1x + 2r 1 + n 2 + Γ QG2 x 1 ν i G 1.. 8
Proof. Let R be the incidence matrix [2] of G 1. Then the signless Laplacian matrix of G 1 G 2 can be written as r 1 + n 2 I n1 R 1 T n 2 I n1 QG 1 G 2 = R T 2I m1 0 m1 n 1 n 2. 1 n2 I n1 0 n1 n 2 m 1 QG 2 + I n2 I n1 The rest of the proof is similar to that of Theorem 2.7 and hence we omit details. By applying 1.1, Theorem 2.11 implies the following result. Corollary Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an r 2 - regular n 2 φ QG 1 G 2 ; x = x 2 m 1 n1 x 1 νi G 2 n 1 n1 x 3 ax 2 + bx + c. where a = 3 + r 1 + 2r 2 + n 2, b = 2 + 3r 1 + 2r 1 r 2 + 4r 2 + 2r 2 n 2 + 2n 2 ν i G 1, c = 2r 1 4r 1 r 2 4r 2 n 2 + ν i G 1 + 2r 2 ν i G 1. Theorem 2.11 enables us to construct infinitely many pairs of Q-cospectral graphs. Corollary a If G 1 and G 2 are Q-cospectral regular graphs, and H is any graph, then G 1 H and G 2 H are Q-cospectral. b If G is a regular graph, and H 1 and H 2 are Q-cospectral graphs with Γ QH1 x = Γ QH2 x, then G H 1 and G H 2 are Q-cospectral. 3 Spectra of subdivision-edge coronae We label the vertices of G 1 G 2 as follows. Let V G 1 = {v 1, v 2,..., v n1 }, IG 1 = {e 1, e 2,..., e m1 } and V G 2 = {u 1, u 2,..., u n2 }. For i = 1, 2,..., m 1, let u i 1, ui 2,..., ui n 2 denote the vertices of the ith copy of G 2, with the understanding that u i j is the copy of u j for each { j. Denote W j = u 1 j, u2 j,..., um 1 j } for j = 1, 2,..., n 2. Then V G 1 IG 1 [W 1 W 2 W n2 ] is a partition of V G 1 G 2. It is clear that the degrees of the vertices of G 1 G 2 are: d G1 G 2 v i = d G1 v i for i = 1, 2,..., n 1, d G1 G 2 e i = 2 + n 2 for i = 1, 2,..., m 1, and d G1 G 2 u i j = d G 2 u j + 1 for i = 1, 2,..., m 1, j = 1, 2,..., n A-spectra of subdivision-edge coronae Theorem 3.1. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary φ AG 1 G 2 ; x = φag 2 ; x m1 x Γ AG2 x m 1 n 1 n1 x 2 Γ AG2 xx λ i G 1 r 1. 9
Proof. Let R be the incidence matrix [2] of G 1. Then with the partition V G 1 IG 1 [W 1 W 2 W n2 ], the adjacency matrix of G 1 G 2 can be written as 0 n1 n 1 R 0 n1 m 1 n 2 AG 1 G 2 = R T 0 m1 m 1 1 T n 2 I m1. 0 m1 n 2 n 1 1 n2 I m1 AG 2 I m1 Thus the adjacency characteristic polynomial of G 1 G 2 is given by xi n1 R 0 n1 m 1 n 2 φ AG 1 G 2 = det R T xi m1 1 T n 2 I m1 0 m1 n 2 n 1 1 n2 I m1 xi n2 AG 2 I m1 = detxi n2 AG 2 I m1 dets = φ AG 2 ; x m1 dets, where S = = xin1 R 0n1 m 1 n 2 xi R T xi m1 1 T n2 AG 2 I n1 1 0 m1 n 2 n 1 n 2 I m1 1 n2 I m1 xin1 R R T x ΓAG2 x I m1 is the Schur complement [21] of xi n2 AG 2 I m1. Let G be an r-regular graph on n vertices and m edges with m n, and let p, q 1 be integers. Then the A-spectrum of G K p,q consists of : a 0, repeated mp + q 2 times; b three roots of the equation each root repeated m n times; c four roots of the equation for each i = 1, 2,..., n. x 3 pq + p + qx 2pq = 0, x 4 pq + p + q + r + λ i Gx 2 2pqx + pqr + λ i G = 0 Corollary 3.4. a If G 1 and G 2 are A-cospectral regular graphs, and H is an arbitrary graph, then G 1 H and G 2 H are A-cospectral. b If G is a regular graph, and H 1 and H 2 are A-cospectral graphs with Γ AH1 x = Γ AH2 x, then G H 1 and G H 2 are A-cospectral. Similar to Corollary 2.4, the subdivision-edge coronae enable us to construct infinite families of A-integral graphs by using Corollary 3.2. Note that the A-spectrum of K n1 K n2 is 1, n1 1 m1 n ± 2n1 2 + n 2 ± n1 2 + n 2, ± 1 n2, 0 m 1n 2 1+n 1. Then K n1 K n2 is A-integral if and only if 2n n 2, n n 2 and n 2 are integers. Corollary 3.2 implies that the A-spectrum of K n1,n 1 K n2 consists of ± 1, 2n 1 + n 2 ± n 1 + n 2 2n 1 2, ± n 2 m1 2n 1 +1, 0 2n 1 +m 1 n 2 m 1. Thus K n1,n 1 K n2 is A-integral if and only if 2n 1 + n 2, n 1 + n 2 and n 2 are integers. Then we have the following two constructions of A-integral graphs see Figure 3 for an example of Corollary 3.5. Corollary 3.5. K n1 K n2 is A-integral if n 1 = 2t + 3 and n 2 = t 2 for t = 1, 2,.... Corollary 3.6. K n1,n 1 K n2 s = 1, 2, 3,..., t = 1, 2, 3,..., is A-integral if n 1 = 4st 2 2s 2 + 3s + 1 and n 2 = t 2 2s for 11
Fig. 3: K 5 K 1 with A-spectrum ±3 1, ±2 4, ±1 5, L-spectra of subdivision-edge coronae Theorem 3.7. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary φ LG 1 G 2 ; x = x n 2 x + 2 m 1 n 2 n1 x 1 µi G 2 m 1 i=2 n 1 x r 1 + n 2 x r 1 + r 1 n 2 + µ i G 1 x µ i G 1. Then the Laplacian matrix of G 1 G 2 can be written as r 1 I n1 R 0 n1 m 1 n 2 LG 1 G 2 = R T 2 + n 2 I m1 1 T n 2 I m1. 0 m1 n 2 n 1 1 n2 I m1 LG 2 + I n2 I m1 Thus the Laplacian characteristic polynomial of G 1 G 2 is given by x r 1 I n1 R 0 n1 m 1 n 2 φ LG 1 G 2 = det R T x 2 n 2 I m1 1 T n 2 I m1 0 m1 n 2 n 1 1 n2 I m1 x 1I n2 LG 2 I m1 = detx 1I n2 LG 2 I m1 dets = n 2 dets x 1 µi G 2 m 1, where S = x r1 I n1 R R T x 2 n2 Γ LG2 x 1 I m1 is the Schur complement [21] of x 1I n2 LG 2 I m1. Recall that µ i G 1 = r 1 λ i G 1, i = 1, 2,..., n 1. Then the result follows from 12
x dets = x r 1 n1 det 2 n2 Γ LG2x 1 I 1 m1 R T R x r 1 m 1 = x r 1 n1 x 2 n 2 Γ LG2 x 1 λ ilg x r 1 = x r 1 n1 x 2 n 2 Γ LG2 x m1 n 1 x r 1 n 1 x 2 n 2 Γ LG2 x 1 λ ig 1 + r x r 1 = x 2 n 2 Γ LG2 x 1 m 1 n 1 n 1 x r 1 + n 2 + Γ LG2 x 1 x + r 1 n 2 + r 1 Γ LG2 x 1 + µ i G 1. = x 1 m1 x n 2 x + 2 m 1 n 1 n 1 x r 1 + n 2 x r 1 + r 1 n 2 + µ i G 1 x µ i G 1. Theorem 3.7 implies the following results. Corollary 3.8. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary tg 1 G 2 = 2m 1 n1 2 + r 1 + r 1 n 2 n 1 tg 1 n 2 i=2 µi G m 1. n 1 + m 1 + m 1 n 2 Corollary 3.9. Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary KfG 1 G 2 = m n 2 + n n2 m 1 n 2 + 1n n 2 m µ i G 2 i= r 1 + n r 1 + r 1 n r 1 + r 1 n 2 n 1 KfG 1 Corollary a If G 1 and G 2 are L-cospectral regular graphs, and H is an arbitrary graph, then G 1 H and G 2 H are L-cospectral. b If G is a regular graph, and H 1 and H 2 are L-cospectral graphs, then G H 1 and G H 2 are L-cospectral. 13
3.3 Q-spectra of subdivision-edge coronae Theorem Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an arbitrary φ QG 1 G 2 ; x = x 2 n 2 Γ QG2 x 1 m 1 n 2 n1 x 1 νi G 2 m 1 n 1 x r 1 + n 2 + Γ QG2 x 1x + r n 2 + Γ QG2 x 1 ν i G 1. Proof. Let R be the incidence matrix [2] of G 1. Then the signless Laplacian matrix of G 1 G 2 can be written as r 1 I n1 R 0 n1 m 1 n 2 QG 1 G 2 = R T 2 + n 2 I m1 1 T n 2 I m1. 0 m1 n 2 n 1 1 n2 I m1 QG 2 + I n2 I m1 The result follows by refining the arguments used to prove Theorem 3.7. By applying 1.1 again, Theorem 3.11 implies the following result. Corollary Let G 1 be an r 1 -regular graph on n 1 vertices and m 1 edges, and G 2 an r 2 - regular the Q-spectrum of G 1 G 2 consists of: a ν i G 2 + 1, repeated m 1 times, for each i = 1, 2,..., n 2 1; b three roots of the equation x 3 ax 2 + bx + c = 0 for each j = 1, 2,..., n 1, where a = 3 + r 1 + 2r 2 + n 2, b = 2 + r 1 n 2 + 2r 1 r 2 + 2r 2 n 2 + 3r 1 + 4r 2 ν j G 1, c = 2r 1 4r 1 r 2 2r 1 r 2 n 2 + ν j G 1 + 2r 2 ν j G 1 ; c two roots of the equation each root repeated m 1 n 1 times. x r 2 + n 2 x r 2 + r 2 n 2 = 0, Finally, Theorem 3.11 enables us to construct infinitely many pairs of Q-cospectral graphs. Corollary a If G 1 and G 2 are Q-cospectral regular graphs, and H is an arbitrary graph, then G 1 H and G 2 H are Q-cospectral. b If G is a regular graph, and H 1 and H 2 are Q-cospectral graphs with Γ QH1 x = Γ QH2 x, then G H 1 and G H 2 are Q-cospectral.
