1 ANNALES HISTORICO-NATURALES MUSEI NATIONALIS HUNGARICI Tomus 59. PARS ZOOLOGICA On Kieffer's and Dalman's Types (Hymenoptera, Dryinidae) By L. MÓCZÁR, Budapest I have already discussed some Dryinidae and Bethylidae types before (MÓCZÁR 1965,. 1966a, b). Hereby, I wish to publish some further notes on the types of Anteonini to be found partly in the Collection of the Hungarian Natural History Museum in Budapest and partly in the Collection of the Natural History Museum in Stockholm. Fam. Dryinidae 3. Tribe: Anteonini Anteon rubrifrons KIEFFER Anteon rubrifrons KIEFFER, 1905, Spec. Hym., 9, p. 158 $ Anteon rubrifrons: 1908, KIEFFER, Gen. Insect., 54, p. 27 Lasianteon rubrifrons: 1914, KIEFFER, Das Tierreich, 41, p Kieffer wrote of the original material (1905 p. 158) as follows: "Patrie. Hongrie: Kis-Pöse. MÉHELY. (Type au Musée national de Budapest)." The data of the specimen in Mus. Budapest are the same and in addition "Lasianteon rubrifrons K." in BÍRÓ'S writing (red label), "38" (antenna! segments from the 7th, fore right leg, middle right tarsi, hind left leg and abdomen lost; fore left tibia and tarsi on celluloid), consequently this specimen may be regarded as holotype, Hym. Type No. 97. There are some differences between the diagnosis and the holotype: "funicule brun" correctly: segment 1 2 of antennae paler, yellowish; "le 3 e (article) de moitié plus long que le 2 e " or (KIEFFER 1914 p. 198) "3. Glied V-j 2 mal so lang wie das 2" incorrect, segment 3 only a little longer than 2 (6:4,5); KIEFFER (1905 p. 158): "Pronotum presque aussi long que large" exactly 20:23, (measured at the hind margin of pronotum); "Métatarse antérieur aussi long que les articles 2 et 3 réunis; 4 e article arqué faiblement, aussi long que les 3 précédents réunis ; 5 e plus court que le 1 er " incorrect, the right proportions of fore tarsal segments 1 5 = 5:2:2,5:6:13 (its whole length) and 12 (enlarged claw) (Fig. 1); according to KIEEEER (1914 p. 198) "Mandibel gelblichweiss, 3zähnig. Maxillarpalpus gelblich mit 4 langen vorstehenden Gliedern, deren 3 hinter der Biegung" not correct, mandibles with 4 teeth (Fig. 5), labial palpi with 3 segments, maxillary palpi with 6 (Figs. 2, 3). In addition to the description: exact proportions of antennái segments 1 7 = = 8:4,5:6:4,5:4,5:4:4. Scutellum smooth, shining punctureless, postscutellum also smooth, shining, very sparsely punctured. Fore coxae and femora swollen, tibia only slightly convex (Fig. 4). Tibial spurs 1, 1, 1.
2 This species is near to Anteon (Chelogynus) ephippiger var. collars (DALMAN) (sensu RICHARDS 1939 p. 233, 268), but differs from it in the following respect: head black with brownish-reddish spots, pronotum yellowish-red only above on both sides dark brownish-black; longitudinal edges of hind coxae with narrow brown, Fig, 1 5. Anteon rubrifrons KIEFFER, 1: fore tarsal segments 1 5 with chela, 2: labial, 3: maxillary palpi, 4: tibia, 5: mandible patch outer sides of hind femora brown; vertex convex, very finely alutaceous, lateral keels running from antennái sockets weak, ending between the eyes, central keel distinct from mid-ocellus, but very short; punctures on vertex very sparse, except anteriorly; chela not pointed on both ends as RICHARDS'S Fig. 71 (Anteon ephippiger var. collare DALM., RICHARDS 1939), but narrowed gradually (Fig. 1); pronotum sparsely punctured and crossed by a few longitudinal striae in lateral view. I transfer this species back into genus Anteon according to RICHARDS (1953 p. 53).

Lond., 89, p. 246 çf According to DALMAN : "Hab. in Vestrogotia". The single specimen of this species which may be regarded as holotype together with the original specimens (2 $,3 çf) of Gonatopus brachycerus DALMAN was kindly sent by Mr. G. HALLIN, from DALMAN'S collection in Stockholm. The DALMAN'S original description differs from the holotype only in one respect, as follows: "metathorace punctatissimo". It is possible that surface of propodeum seems to be coarsely or irregularly wrinkled by about 80 x magnification, further, this structure more moderate only on its Fig Anteon pubicornis (DALMAN), 6: mandible, 7: labial, 8: maxillary palpi, 9: ninth abdominal sternite, 10: eight abdominal sternite, 11: genitalia, ventral view
4 declivous part. Besides, this species is distinctly separated from A. brachycerum especially on the ground of the following characters (in respect of holotype) : 1. Frons alutaceous only laterally in the lower corners, elsewhere smooth, shin ing with scattered small but rather deep punctures. 2. Surface of postscutellum rough, only slightly shining. 3. Episternum smooth, shining only dorsally, with finely scattered punctures laterally and dorsally; crenate furrow irregularly, coarsely rugose on both sides. Further additions to the description : scape cylindrical, last segment more acute and shorter than on brachycerum D A L M A N, mandibles with 4 teeth (Fig. 6). Ocelli in a right angle, POL:OOL:APO (anterior-posterior ocelarline) = 8:9:5. Eyes: half frons = 7:14. Propodeum coarsely rough, its whole surface irregularly wrinkled, in the middle somewhat finer, the V-shaped keel hardly visible, oblique suture of episternum broad, crenate. DALMAN, 2 2 There are the following specimens i n the Coll. H u n g. N a t. hist. Mus.: 1. " N y s t a d, H e l l é n " and 2. " E p p i n g " "brachycerus D. Coll. MARSHALL" perfectly conform to holotype, whereas the other specimens differ from i t as follows: 3. " N " = N u n t o n, near Salisbury (MORLEY, 1915), "brachycerus D. Coll. MARSHALL" P O L : O O L : A P O = 8 : 1 0 : 5, eyes: h a l f o f frons = 7:16, surface o f postscutellum slightly smoother. 4. ' T. o f W. " = I s l e o f W i g h t, "brachycerus D. Coll. MARSHALL" P O L : O O L : A P O = 8 : 8 : 5, frons w i t h a short longitudinal impression i n the middle, surface o f postscutellum slightly smoother. 5. " B f m g " = Botusfleming (Cornwall) P O L : O O L : A P O = 9 : 1 1: 5, frons slightly shin ing, more irregularly punctured, eyes : half of frons = 7 : 1 6, postscutellum slightly smoother. I regard the specimens 3 5 also as A. pubicornis DALMAN i n spite o f the small differences. Genitalia also differs from A. brachycerum D A L M A N (see Fig. 57. RICHARDS'S as follows: paramere distinctly lengthened triangular apically and dorsally directed towards the middle (Fig. 1 1 of the specimen No 5 ) ; there seems to be a small triangular corner also ventrally, being only an extent lamina over the margin of paramere emerging from the inner part of genitalia ; basal part of digitus is more angular, not pointed or elogated as on A. brachycerum D A L M A N ; a distinctly darker, more chitinized part not separated on the inner margin of lamina volsellaris, penis valvae slender, stalk of the ninth abdominal sternite as slight as A. brachycerum D A L M A N, but the apical border broadly rounded and not concave, towards its middle strongly narrowed (Fig. 9), eight abdominal sternite broad (Fig. 10), maxillary palpi with 6, labial palpi with 3 segments (Fig. 8, 7). 5 3. Episternum smooth and shining with scattered punctures dorsally and later ally, densely but finely punctured ventrally and rough but slightly shining like the middle of propodeum. Further addition to the description: scape not cylindrical, last segment longer, conical, mandibles with 4 teeth, ivory white. Ocelli in an obtuse angle, POL:OOL: :APO = 10:10:4. Length and breadth of eyes = 23:16. Eyes: half of frons= 10:16. Length (and breadth) of antennái segment 1 10 = 15 (5):6 (3,5):7 (4,5):6:5 (4,5):6 ( 5 ) : 6 : 6 : 6 ( 5, 5 ) : 1 1 (5,5). Middle of propodeum mostly smooth between the V-shaped keels. Oblique suture of episternum narrow and fine. 3 2 One specimen w i t h o u t locality ("Coll, M a y r " ) identified as A. pubicornis DALMAN by FORSTER, conforms to type, only the middle part o f propodeum between the V-shaped keels roughly b u t not deeply punctured. According to K I E F F E R (1906 p. 518) this species and also a new one from England have been identified as Anteon longi cornis D A L M. in MARSHALL'S collection. K I E F F E R described this new species as Halidayi n. sp. From this material 4 9 $ in Coll. Hung. Nat. Hist. Mus. with the following localities: 1. "Cwthy" = Corn worthy (Devon) accordig MORLEY (1915), "longicornis D. Coll. M A R S H A L L " in KIEFFER'S writing, "longicornis D A L M. " in MARSHALL'S writing, " " 9 \ 2. "longicornis D. Coll. Type No 99. Specimens marked 1 2 conform with the RICHARDS'S description (1939 p. 241) only the following differences can be found : pronotum before the hind margin with a transversaly transparent yellowish-red spot, hind coxae only at the base slightly black. Otherwise, antennae entirelly yellow, so is clypeus. I n addition to the descrip tion, as follows : fore tarsus (Fig. 12,13) maxillary and labial palpi (Figs ). Man dibles with 4 teeth. Tibial spurs 1, 1,1. Fore tibia: Fig. 14, fore tarsal segments 1 3: Fig. 13, fore tarsal segments 3 5: Fig. 12. Specimens marked 3 4 belong to halidayi K I E F F E R, which can be considered as paralectotypes. Specimen No. 98: antennae light brown, with segments 1 2, paler; antennae of specimen No. 99 paler; head smooth, shining, free part of chela bearing two rows of minute lamellae and two rows of bristles (Fig. 12). RICHARDS has examined the lectotype of Anteon holiday from Ireland and I share his opinion when I decided to consider, on the ground of the paralectotypes, halidayi K I E F F E R as the synonym of longicornis. a r e
