Calculation of generalized ubbell rectangular source integral Jonathan Murley and Nasser Saad arxiv:9.7v [math-h] Se Deartment of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Prince Edward Island Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island CA 4P3, Canada October 6, 8 Abstract A simle formula for comuting the generalized ubbell radiation rectangular source integral [ ] a,b,,λ = σa b x λ (x +) α F (α,β;γ; a α,β,γ 4π x + )dx, is introduced. Tables are given to comare the numerical values derived from our aroximation formula with those given earlier in the literature. PACS: Primary 33C65, 33C5, 33C ; Secondary 33B5, 33C9, 3D, 33C6, 33D6, 33D9. keywords: Aell hyergeometric functions F, ubbell radiation rectangular source integral, Classical hyergeometric functions, Reduction formulas, Radiation field integrals. Introduction In their ioneering work, ubbell et al. (96) obtained a series exansion for the calculation of radiation field generated by a lane isotroic rectangular source (laque), in which the leading term is the integral I(a,b) = σ b ( ) a dx arctan 4π x + x +, () here σ is the uniform surface source strength er unit source area. In equation () the quantities a = w/h and b = l/h are defined in the range < a b, where h is the height over the a corner of a laque of length l and width w. For the imortant alications of this integral in many roblems in radiation field, different methods were introduced to obtain numerical values of detector resonse to laque source h(a,b) = I(a,b) (σ/4π) = b ( ) a dx arctan x + x + () Corresonding author
For some of these methods we refer to the work of Glasser, 984; Kalla et al., 987; Ghose et al., 988; Galué et al., 988; Götze, 995; Kalla, 993; Timus, 993; Michieli and Maximovic, 996; Kalla and Khajah (997, ); Prabha, ; Stalker, ; Guseinov et al., 4; Ezure, 5; Guseinov et al., 5; Prabha, 7. Although h(a, b) is not exressible in simle closed form, Glasser (984) has evaluated it in terms of Aell s hyergeometric function F (see for examle Slater (966), Ch. 8, for a study of Aell functions F q, q =,,3,4). Indeed, elementary differentiation of (), with resect to a, we have h(a,b) = a b dx dy +x +y (3) and straightforward substitutions x = a u and y = b v allow as to write (3) as the doubleintegral reresentation of Aell s hyergeometric function F (Slater (966), Ch. 8, formula 8..3), consequently h(a,b) = abf (;, ; 3, 3 ; a, b ). (4) Various generalizations of equation () have been given in the literature (see for examle, Kalla et al., 987; Galué et al., 988; Saigo and Srivastava, 99; Galué, 99; Kalla, 993; Galué et al., 994, Kalla et al., Oner 7). More secifically, Kalla et al. (987) introduced a generalization defined by the integral [ a,b,,λ α,β,γ ] = σa 4π b x λ (x +) α F (α,β;γ; a x )dx (5) + where γ > β > ;a,b, > ; < λ < a ; and F (α,β;γ;x) is Gauss hyergeometric function (Slater, 966, Ch. ). We notice that [ ] a,b,,,, 3 = I(a,b) (6) by virtue of the identity (Slater, 966; formula.5.) x F (, ; 3 ; x ) = arctan(x). (7) By selecting suitable values for the arameters α,β and γ, equation (5) can be reduced to different integrals with otential alications in radiation-field roblems of secific configurations of source, barrier and detector (Kalla, 993). Such results are also useful in illumination and heat-exchange engineering Boast, 94; Fano et al., 959; ubbell, 96. Using a simle transformation, x = b u, equation (5) can be written as [ a,b,,λ α,β,γ ] = σa b λ+ 4π α u λ+ ( u) λ+3 λ+ ( b u ) α F (α,β;γ; a (8) ( b )u)du which is easily comared with the single-integral reresentation of the Aell hyergeometric function F (Os et al., 5, formula (.6)) to yields [ ] a,b,,λ = σa b λ+ α,β,γ 4π (λ+) αf (α;β, λ+ ;γ, λ+3 ; a, b ) (9)
Recently, Os et al. (9) establish a number of new recursion formulas for the Aell hyergeometric functions F wherein some alications to the evaluation of some generalized radiation field integrals were discussed. The urose of the resent work is to continue our investigation of finding closed form and aroximation formulas for effectively comuting the radiation field integrals such as equations () and (5). In the next section, we develo a new aroximation formula to evaluate recisely and to any desire degree of accuracy the generalized ubbell radiation rectangular source integral (9). In section 3, numerical results and comarisons with reviously reorted values are resented. The comutation of F (α;β, λ+ λ+3 ;γ, ; a, b ) May be one of the most imortant cases regarding the comutations of the radiation field integrals that cature the interest of many researchers is evaluating the integral Eq. () effectively and recisely. Some researchers were able to evaluate h(a, b) using raidly convergent series (see the original work of ubbell et al, 96), further Gabutti et al. (99) investigated h(a, b) in terms of its series exansions while numerical comutations of this integral have been carried out by anak and Cechak (978), Götze (995) develoed an effective method for comuting the ubbell radiation rectangular source integral, Kalla and Khajah (997) (see also Kalla and Khajah ()) used Tau Method to aroximate (a, b), Stalker () used new convergent series for evaluating h(a,b) for large a and b and more recently, Ezure (5) used aselogrove method, Guseinov et al. (4) used binomial exansion (see also Guseinov et al. (5)), Prabha (6) exressed again h(a, b) using some recurrence relations (see also Prabha (7)). For a survey of various methods in comuting the ubbell rectangular source integral Eq.() and its generalization, we refer to the work of Kalla et al.. In this section, we given a new aroximation equation that can be used to comute [ a,b,,λ α,β,γ ] to any degree of recision and, byroduct, we can, therefore, evaluate the ubbell radiation rectangular source integral (). Our aroximation exression based on the following recurrence formula for F (see Os et al. (9) for detailed roof.). Theorem : For x + y < ; n ; σ, α, α C; β, β C\Z, the Aell hyergeometric function F satisfies the following identity F (σ;α,α n;β,β ;x,y) = F (σ;α,α ;β,β ;x,y) σ y n F (σ +;α,α k +;β,β +;x,y). () β k= Writing F (α;β, λ+ λ+3 ;γ, ; a, b ) as F (α;β, λ+3 ;γ, λ+3 ; a, b ) and aly the recurrence relation (), we obtain F (α;β, λ+ ;γ, λ+3 ; a, b ) = F (α;β, λ+3 αy λ+3 F (α+;β, λ+3 By means of the identity (Slater, 96; formula ) ;γ, λ+3 ; a, b ) F (σ;α,β ;β,β ;x,y) = ( y) σ F (σ,α ;β ; 3 ;γ, λ+5 ; a, b ) () x ), () y
we may now write Eq.() as F (α;β, λ+ ;γ, λ+3 ; a, b ) = (+ b ) α F (α,β;γ; αy λ+3 F (α+;β, λ+3 a +b ) ;γ, λ+5 ; a, b ). (3) Further, wemaynowregardf (α+;β, λ+3 λ+5 ;γ, ; a, b )asf (α+;β, λ+5 λ+5 ;γ, ; a, b ) and aly the recurrence relation () again to obtain F (α;β, λ+ ;γ, λ+3 ; a, b ) = (+ b ) α F (α,β;γ; After similar n stes, we arrive at F (α;β, λ+ ;γ, λ+3 ; a, b a +b ) αy b a (+ λ+3 ) α F (α+,β;γ; +b ) + α(α+)y (λ+3)(λ+5) F (α+;β, λ+5 ;γ, λ+7 ; a, b ) (4) n ) = ( ) k (α) k ) k= + ( )n+ (α) n+ y n+ ) ( 3+λ n+ ( 3+λ k ( b )k (+ b a ) α k F (α+k,β;γ; +b ) F (α+n+;β, λ+n+3 ;γ, λ+n+5 ; a, b ) where (α) k denotes the Pochhammer symbol defined, in terms of Gamma functions, by (α) k = Γ(α+k) { if (k = ; α C\{}), = Γ(α) α(α+)(α+)...(α+k ) if (k N; α C), here N being the set of ositive integers. In rincile, the comutation of F (α + n + ;β, λ+n+3 technique and consequently, for large n F (α;β, λ+ ;γ, λ+3 n ( ; a, b ) (α) ( k b 3+λ ) k= k From which we now have for large n, [ ] a,b,,λ σa b λ+ n α,β,γ 4π (λ+) α k= (α) k ) ( 3+λ k ( b ;γ, λ+n+5 (5) ; a, b ) follows the same ) k ) α k (+ b F (α+k,β;γ; a +b ). (6) ) k ) α k (+ b a F (α+k,β;γ; +b) (7) since the two-terms asymtotic exansion of the Aell hyergeometric function F develoed by Lóez and Pagola (8) indicate that for large n, the Aell hyergeometric function F (α+n+;β, λ+n+3 on the right-hand side of Eq.(5) aroach zero. 4 ;γ, λ+n+5 ; a, b )
3 Numerical results and discussion In order to test our aroximation formula (7) and to show that it indeed simlify much of the numerical comlexity involved in calculating the radiation field integrals such as () and (5), we comare, [ first, ] our aroximation formula against the exact equation obtained earlier in comuting a,b,,,, (Os et al. (9), equation (83)), namely, for σ =, [ ] a,b,,,, = ab 8π F ( ;,;,; a, b ) [ = a ] + b 4π F (, a ;; +b ) F (, ;; a ) (8) and [ a,b,,,, ] [ n = ab 8π lim ( ) k n () k= k ( b ) k ( ) ] + b k F ( +k, ;; a +b ). (9) In Table, we reorted our comutation using equations (8) and (9) for different values of a, b and, the calculations were erformed using MATEMATICA software version 7. It should be clear that any discreancies may aear are due to the numerical accuracy used in comuting the Gauss hyergeometric functions. In Table, we comared our calculated values with those Table : Comarison of the values of [ a,b,,,,] for some values of a, b and calculated using equations (8) and (9) a b Eq. (8) Eq. (9) obtained by Guseinov and Memedov (5) and with those obtained by Galué et al. (994). It should be clear that equation (7) can be used for arbitrary values of the arameters a, b, and it is not restricted to any articular range of arameter values. In Table 3, we reort our numerical comutation of the ubbell rectangular source integral () for σ = = as well for some other values of using equation (7), or simly [ ] a,b,,,, 3 σab 4π n k= k! ( 3 ) k ( b ) k ) k (+ b F (k+, ; 3 ; a +b) () In the same table, we also comared our results with the earlier numerical values obtained of Guseinov and Mademov (5) and Galué et al (994). It is worth noting an imortant feature of 5
