ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM OVER NUMBERS MULTIPLE OF A FIXED INTEGER arxiv: v2 [math.nt] 2 Apr 2008 VLADIMIR SHEVELEV Abstract. We prove that the ratio of the Newman sum over numbers multiple of a fixed integer which is not multiple of and the Newman sum over numbers multiple of a fixed integer divisible by is o(1) when the upper limit of summing tends to infinity. Denote for x, m N (1) S m (x) = 1. Introduction 0 n<x,n 0(modm) ( 1) σ(n), where σ(n) is the number of 1 s in the binary expansion of n. Sum (1) is a Newman digit sum. From the fundamental paper of A.O.Gelfond [2] it follows that (2) S m (x) = O(x λ ), λ = ln ln 4. with an absolute constant. In the case of a prime m for which 2 is a primitive or semiprimitive root, some more exact estimates for x = 2 n were obtained by the author in [7]. Namely, in this case ) () S m (x) = O (x ln m () ln2. On the other hand, ( M.Drmota ) and M.Skalba [] using a close and more suitable function S m (l) (x) proved that if m is a multiple of then for sufficiently large x, (4) S m (x) > 0. Below we prove the following results.
ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 2 Theorem 1. If (m, ) = 1 then there exists a positive constant λ m < ln ln4 such that (5) S m (x) = O(x λm ). Theorem 2. If m is a multiple of then there exists a positive constant γ m < ln such that ln4 (6) 1 ( x λ 6 + O (x m 6) γm ) S m (x) 1 ( x λ 55 + O (x m 65) γm ). In particular, from(6) again follows (4). Note also that Theorems 1, 2 solve our problem no.6 in [8]. In the end of the paper we discuss the distribution of values of the Newman sums over primes. We have S m (N) = 2. Proof of Theorem 1. N n=0,m n (7) = 1 m ( 1) σn = 1 m t=0 t=0 N ( 1) σ(n) e n=0 N e 2πi( t m n+1 2 σ(n)). n=0 nt 2πi( m ) = Notice that for each t the interior sum in (7) is a sum of the type (8) F m,α (N) = N e 2πi(αn+1 2 σ(n)), 0 α < 1. n=0 Let us consider the summands in (8) (9) f m,α (n) = e 2πi(αn+1 2 σ(n)), 0 n N. Note that, (10) f m,α (0) = 1
ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM and for k 0, (11) f m,α (2 k ) = e 2πi(2k α+ 1 2 ). Let N = ν c k 2 k, c k = 0 or 1, i=0 be binary expansion of N such that (12) ν = ln N. ln2 According to formula (5) in [2] and by (10),(11) we have n (1) F m,α (N) < e 2πi(2k α+ 1 2 ). Furthermore we have n=0 (14) 1 + e 2πi(2k α+ 1 2 ) = 2 sin(2 k απ)(sin(2 k απ) i cos(2 k απ)) (15) (16) and, therefore, 1 + e 2πi(2k α+ 1 2 ) 2 sin(2 k απ). According to (1) let us estimate the product n 2 sin(2 k απ) 2 n+1 Repeating arguments of [2], put n sin(2 k απ). k=1 (17) sin(2 k απ) = tk. Considering the function (18) ρ(x) = 2x 1 x 2, 0 x 1,
ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 4 we have (19) t k = 2t k 1 1 t 2 k 1 = ρ(t k 1). Note that (20) ρ (x) = 2( 1 x 2 for x 0 x 1, where x 2 1 x 2 ) 1 (21) x 0 = 2 is the only positive root of the equation ρ(x) = x. Show that either (22) t k max m <l<2m or both t k > g m and ( sin lπ ) = g m < m 2 (2) t k t k+1 max 0 l Indeed, α has the form ( sin lπ ( m sin lπ )) m = h m < 4. (24) α = t m, 0 t m 1. Let for a fixed t [0, m 1], k [1, n] (25) t2 k 1 l( mod m), 0 l m 1. Then (26) t k = sin lπ m
ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 5 Now distinguish two cases: 1) t k 2 2)t k > 2. In case 1) t k = 2 lπ m = rπ and since 0 l m 1 then, (r, ) = 1 m = l, r = 1, 2. r Because of the condition (m, ) = 1, we have t k < and (22) follows. 2 2) Let now t k > = x 2 0. For ε > 0 put (27) 1 + ε = t k x 0 = 2 sin(π2 k α), such that and 1 ε = 2 2 sin(π2 k α) (28) 1 ε 2 = 4 sin(π2 k α) ( sin(π2 k α) ). By (19) and (27) we have t k+1 = ρ(t k ) = ρ((1 + ε)x 0 ) = ρ(x 0 ) + εx 0 ρ (c), where c (x 0, (1 + ε)x 0 ). Thus, according to (20) and taking into account that ρ(x 0 ) = x 0, we find while by (27) t k+1 x 0 (1 + ε) t k = x 0 (1 + ε).
ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 6 Now in view of (28) and (21) t k t k+1 sin π2 k α ( sin(π2 k α) ) and according to (25),(26) we obtain that where h m is defined by (2). Now denoting t k t k+1 h m, we find b m = max(g m, h m ) < 2 n sin(π2 k α) (b n 2 m ) 2 b n 1 k=1 and by (1),(12) and (16) F m,α (N) 4 b m n=0 (2b m ) n c m (2b m ) ln N ln2 = cm N ln(2bm) where c m = 4 b m(2b ). Thus, the theorem follows from (7) and (8) m. Proof of Theorem 2. ln2, The idea of our proof is based on the examination of the main Gelfond formula (see (4) in [2]) step by step with a sufficiently large number of steps. For illustration we shall take two first steps. Step 1) Let N = 2 ν. Then by the mentioned formula and by (8)-(11) we have (29) F m,α (N) = (1 + e 2πi(2k α+ 1 2 ) ), 0 < α < 1.
Thus, by (7) in this case we find (0) S m (N) = 1 m ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 7 t=0 F m, t m (N) = 1 m t=0 (1 + e 2πi(2k t m +1 2 ) ). Select in (0) the summands which correspond to t = m, 2m. Then we have S m (N) 1 m ( 1 + e 2πi 2 (1) t=0,t m, 2m k +1 2 ) + ) (1 + e 2πi(2k t m +1 2 ). ( 1 + e 2πi 2 ) k Because of 2 k 1 or 2( mod ) and in view of the equality we find ( 1 e 2πi )( 1 e 4πi ) = ) ) (1 + e 2πi(2k +1 2 ) + (1 + e 2πi(2k ) = (2) = { ν 2, if ν is odd 2 ν 2, if ν is even = { N λ, if ν is odd 2N λ, if ν is even where λ = ln ln4. Besides, as in the above proof of Theorem 1 we have, () t=0,t m, 2m (1 + e 2πi(2k t m +1 2) ) = O ) (Nγm with some γ m < λ. The upper estimate is obtained analogously as in (1). Thus, by (2)-() and from the comparison with the case m = (for which in () evidently O(N γm ) 0), we obtain
ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 8 (4) S m (N) = m S (N) + O(N γm ), γ m < λ = ln ln 4. Step 2) Let N = 2 ν + 2 µ, µ < ν. Then by the Gelfond formula we have F m,α (N) = µ 1 (5) + e 2πi(2ν α+ 1 2 ) ( 1 + e 2πi(2k α+ 1 2) ) + ( 1 + e 2πi(2k α+ 1 2) ), 0 < α < 1, and according to (7) (6) S m (N) = 1 m t=0 F m, t (N). m We obtain the upper and lower estimates for S m (N) by the same way as in Step 1 selecting in (6) the summands which correspond to t = m. 2m. Then in the capacity of the main term we obtain m S (N) and (4) remains true with the same number γ m and the doubled constant in O(N γm ). Let us make T steps. Then on the segment [0, X] formula (7) S m (X) = m S (X) + O(X γm ), γ m < λ, could be false only for N [0, X] which have more than T binary ones. Choose T = log 2 X. Then we envelop all integers from [0, X]. Each step is accompanied by the error O(X γm ) in each product of the form n (f(0)+ f(2 k )) with n ν 1. Therefore, the total error in each step is a multiple of error in the first step. Since the Gelfond formula in all has less than or equal to 2ν = 2 log 2 X summands of the form n (f(0)+f(2k )) with n ν 1 then the total error of all log 2 X steps does not exceed O(X log 2 2 X) O(X γ m ), γm < γ m < λ, with the last constant not exceeding the doubled constant of the first step. Thus, we have (8) S m (X) = m S (X) + O(X γ m ). Using the estimates which were obtained in [5]for S (X) (very close estimates follows from Coquet s theorem [1]) we complete proof.
ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 9 Corollary.For m which is not a multiple of, denote U m (x) the number of the positive integers not exceeding x which are multiples of m and not multiples of. Then n U m(x) ( 1) σ(n) = 1 m xλ + O(x δm ), where 0 < δ m < λ. In particular, for sufficiently large x we have. Proof.Since n U m(x) ( 1) σ(n) < 0. U m (x) = S m (x) S m (x) then the corollary immediately follows from Theorems 1, 2 4. On Newman sum over primes In [4] we put the following conjectures. Conjecture 1.For all n N, n 5, 6 ( 1) σ(p) 0. p n where the summing is over all primes not exceeding n. Conjecture 2. ln ( ) p n ( 1)σ(p) lim n ln n = ln ln 4. A heuristic proof of Conjecture 2 was given in [6]. For a prime p, denote V p (x) the set of positive integers not exceeding x for which p is the least prime divisor. Show that the correctness of Conjectures 1(for n n 0 )and 2 follows from the following very plausible statement, especially in view of the above estimates. Conjecture.For sufficiently large n we have (9) 5 p n j V p(n),j>p ( 1) σ(j) < ( 1) σ(j) = S (n) S 6 (n). j V (n)
(40) ESTIMATES OF NEWMAN SUM 10 Indeed, in the worst case (really is not satisfied) in which for all n p 2 the sum j V (n) j V p(n),j>p ( 1) σ(j) + ( 1) σ(j) < 0, p 5. 5 p n j V p(n),j>p ( 1) σ(j) decreases monotonically in n and by Conjecture remains positive. Hence, the balance condition for odd numbers [6] j n, j is odd ( 1) σ(j) 1 must be ensured permanently by the excess of the odious primes. This explains Conjecture 1. If in (9) the left hand side of the inequality is O(S (n) S 6 (n)) with the constant less than 1 then we obtain correctness of Conjecture 2. It is very interesting that for some primes p most likely indeed (40) is satisfied for all n p 2. Such primes we call resonance primes. Our numerous observations show that all resonance primes not exceeding 1000 are: 11, 19, 41, 67, 107, 17, 179, 181, 07, 1, 421, 41, 4, 587, 601, 61, 641, 647, 727, 787. References [1].
