LANTERN RELATIONS AND RATIONAL BLOWDOWNS arxiv: v [math.gt] 4 Aug 2008 HISAAKI ENDO AND YUSUF Z. GURTAS Abstract. We discuss a connection between the lantern relation in mapping class groups and the rational blowing down process for 4-manifolds. More precisely, if we change a positive relator in Dehn twist generators of the mapping class group by using a lantern relation, the corresponding Lefschetz fibration changes into its rational blowdown along a copy of the configuration C 2. We exhibit examples of such rational blowdowns of Lefschetz fibrations whose blowup is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the original fibration.. Introduction Lefschetz fibrations relate the topology of symplectic 4-manifolds to the combinatorics on positive relators in Dehn twist generators of mapping class groups. Fuller introduced a substitution technique for constructing positive relators to obtain an example of non-holomorphic Lefschetz fibrations of genus three [5], [4]. Many constructions of Lefschetz fibrations as positive relators can be interpreted as generalizations of his construction (cf. [5]), while it has been less investigated what such substitutions mean geometrically. In this paper we study a particular substitution, the lantern substitution (or the L ± -substitution in short), for positive relators of mapping class groups. The corresponding surgical operation on Lefschetz fibrations turns out to be the rational blowing down process, which was discovered by Fintushel and Stern[6], along a copy of the configuration C 2 (i.e. a 4-framed unknot in Kirby diagrams). Applying a theorem of Usher [9], we give examples of such rational blowdowns of Lefschetz fibrations whose blowup is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the original fibration. In Section 2 we review the lantern relation in mapping class groups and define the lantern substitution for positive relators. We discuss a relation between lantern relations and rational blowdowns in Section and state the main theorem in Section 4. We then exhibit some examples in Section 5 and end by observing other relations in Section 6. The authors are grateful to K. Yasui for helpful comments on the rational blowing down process and to N. 2 2 H. ENDO AND Y. Z. GURTAS 2. Lantern relations and substitutions Let Σ g be a closed oriented surface of genus g ( 2) and M g the mapping class group of Σ g. We denote by F the free group generated by all isotopy classes S of simple closed curves on Σ g. There is a natural epimorphism : F M g which sends (the isotopy class of) a simple closed curve a on Σ g to the righthanded Dehn twist t a along a. We set R := Ker and call each element of R a relator in the generators S of M g. A word in the generators S is called positive if it includes no negative exponents. We put W (c) := t εr a r t ε for c S and W = a εr r a ε a (c) S F (a,...,a r S,ε,...,ε r {±}), and put WV := W (c ) W(c s ) F for V = c c s F (c,...c s S). We begin with a precise definition of the lantern relation [2], [9]. Definition 2.. Let a and b be simple closed curves on Σ g with geometric intersection number 2 and algebraic intersection number 0. We orient a and b locally on a neighborhood of each intersection point p a b such that the intersection number (a b) p at p is +. Resolving all intersection points according to the local orientations, we obtain a new simple closed curve c. A regular neighborhood of a b, which can be chosen to include c, is a genus 0 subsurface Σ of Σ g with four boundary components. We denote simple closed curves parallel to four boundary components of Σ by d,d 2,d, and d 4. The relation t d t d2 t d t d4 = t a t b t c is called the lantern relation. We put L := L(a,b) = abcd 4 d d 2 d R. Let R( ) be a positive relator of M g. Let a,b,c,d,d 2,d, and d 4 be curves as in Definition 2.. Suppose that includes d d 2 d d 4 as a subword: = U d d 2 d d 4 V (U,V F). Since and U L U are both relators of M g, the positive word = U abc V (= U abcd 4 d d 2 d d d 2 d d 4 V = U L U U d d 2 d d 4 V = U L U ) is also a relator of M g. The length of the word is equal to that of minus one. Definition 2.2. We say that is obtained by applying an L-substitution to. Conversely, is said to be obtained by applying an L -substitution to. We also call these two kinds of operations lantern substitutions (cf. [5]). We next recall a definition of Lefschetz fibrations (cf. [], [8]). Definition 2.. Let M be a closed oriented smooth 4-manifold. A smooth map f : M S 2 is called a Lefschetz fibration of genus g if it satisfies the following conditions: (i) f has finitely many critical values b,...,b n S 2 and f is a smooth fiber bundle over S 2 {b,...,b n } with fiber Σ g ; (ii) for each i (i =,...,n), there exists a unique critical point p i in the singular fiberf (b i )suchthat f islocallywrittenasf(z,z 2 ) = z 2 +z 2 2 withrespecttosome local complex coordinates around p i and b i which are compatible with orientations of M and S 2 ; (iii) no fiber contains a -sphere. Remark 2.4. A more general definition can be found in Chapter 8 of [8]. We treat also Lefschetz fibrations with boundary in the proof of Theorem..
LANTERN RELATIONS AND RATIONAL BLOWDOWNS Supposethatg 2. AccordingtotheoremsofKasandMatsumoto,thereexistsa one-to-one correspondence between the isomorphism classes of Lefschetz fibrations and the equivalence classes of positive relators modulo simultaneous conjugations and elementary transformations c c n W (c ) W(c n ), c c i c i+ c n c i+ (c i ) c n, c i+ c c i c i+ c n ci (c i+ ) c i c n, where c c n R is a positive relator in the generator S and W F. This correspondence is described by using the holonomy(or monodromy) homomorphism induced by the classifying map of f restricted on S 2 {b,...b n } (cf. [8], [], and []). We denote (the isomorphism class of) a Lefschetz fibration associated to a positive relator R by M S 2. Let, Rbe positiverelatorsofm g andm,m the correspondinglefschetz fibrations over S 2, respectively. Suppose that the relator is obtained by applying an L-substitution to the relator. The Euler characteristic and the signature of a Lefschetz fibration M S 2 with monodromy are computed as follows: e(m ) = e(m ), σ(m ) = σ(m )+ ([5], Theorem 4. and Proposition.2). We investigate relations between M and M and several properties of them in the subsequent sections.. Rational blowdowns via lantern relations Let, Rbe positiverelatorsofm g andm,m the correspondinglefschetz fibrations over S 2, respectively. Theorem.. If is obtained by applying an L-substitution to, then the 4- manifold M is a rational blowdown of M along a configuration C 2 M. Proof. We take a subsurface Σ of Σ g and curves a,b,c,d,d 2,d, and d 4 on Σ as in Definition 2.. LetN,N be Lefschetz fibrationsoverd 2 with fiber Σcorresponding to the positive words d d 2 d d 4,abc, respectively. Figure Drawing a Kirby diagram of N, sliding the central -framed unknot over other three -framed unknots, and canceling three -handle/2-handle pairs, we obtain a 4-framed unknot (Figure ). Thus N is diffeomorphic to the total space of a D 2 -bundle over S 2 with Euler number 4, which is denoted by C 2 in [6] (see also [8], Section 8.5).
4 H. ENDO AND Y. Z. GURTAS Figure 2 Drawing a Kirby diagram of N and sliding and canceling handles as in Figure 2, we obtain a pair of a dotted circle and a +-framed unknot with linking number +2. This means that N is diffeomorphic to a rational 4-ball with boundary L(4,), which is denoted by B 2 in [6] (see also [8], Section 8.5). From construction, N (resp. N ) can be considered a submanifold of M (resp. M ). It is also easily seen that M intn and M intn are diffeomorphic to each other. Hence we have M N N (M intn) B 2 L(4,) (M intc 2 ). This completes the proof of Theorem.. 4. Smooth structures Let, Rbe positiverelatorsofm g andm,m the correspondinglefschetz fibrations over S 2, respectively. Suppose that is obtained by applying k times L- substitutions (k ), elementary transformations, and simultaneous conjugations to. Suppose alsothat e(m )+σ(m ) 2. We chooseapositive relatorς R(ς ) such that M ς νf is simply-connected and either the word ς includes at least oneseparatingcurveasafactor, orσ(m )+σ(m ς ) is not divisible by 6. HereνF is an open fibered neighborhood of a regular fiber F of M ς. Taking a fiber sum of M (resp. M ) with M ς, we obtain a new Lefschetz fibration M := M # F M ς (resp. M 2 := M # F M ς ) with monodromy Wς (resp. W ς) for some W F (resp. W F). It is obvious that W ς is obtained by applying k times L-substitutions, elementary transformations, and simultaneous conjugations to Wς. Theorem 4.. The 4-manifold M is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to a k times blowup M 2 #kcp 2 of M 2. Moreover, both of these 4-manifolds do not dissolve. Proof. Letj : F i M i bethe inclusionmapfromageneralfiber F i intothe total spacem i (i =,2). The induced homomorphism j # : π (F i ) π (M i ) is surjective and the kernel of j # includes the normal subgroup N of π (M i ) generated by the vanishing cycles of M i (cf. [], Lemma.2). Since M ς νf is simply-connected and j # is the composition of homomorphisms π (F i ) π (M ς νf) π (M i ), the group π (M i ) must be trivial (i =,2). M is a non-spin 4-manifold because either it has a component of a separating singular fiber which represents a homology class of square, or σ(m ) is not divisible by 6. It is easily seen from the observation above that e(m 2 ) = e(m ) k and σ(m 2 ) = σ(m )+k. By virtue of Freedman s classification theorem, both of M and M 2 #kcp 2 is homeomorphic to #b + 2 (M )CP 2 #b 2 (M )CP 2 because they are simply-connected, non-spin, and have the same Euler characteristic and the same signature. M is a fiber sum M # F M ς of non-trivial Lefschetz fibrations M and M ς. By Gompf s theorem ([8], Theorem 0.2.8), M admits a symplectic structure with
LANTERN RELATIONS AND RATIONAL BLOWDOWNS 5 symplectic fibers. It follows from a theorem of Usher [9] that M is a minimal symplectic 4-manifold. Since b + 2 (M ) = b + 2 (M ) b (M )+b + 2 (M ς)+2g >, M does not contain any smooth -sphere as a consequence of Seiberg-Witten theory ([7], [8], cf. [8], Remark 0.2.4(a)). On the other hand, M 2 #kcp 2 has a natural smooth -sphere. Hence M and M 2 #kcp 2 can not be diffeomorphic. Because M and M 2 #kcp 2 admit symplectic structure and b + 2 (M ) >, these manifolds can not be diffeomorphic to #b + 2 (M )CP 2 #b 2 (M )CP 2 ([6], [0], cf. [8], Theorem 0..4). Remark 4.2. We do not use any explicit property of rational blowdowns to prove Theorem 4.. The proof above is rather similar to that of Theorem 4.8 of []. It is likely that M is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to M #kcp 2 (without taking fiber sums with M ς ) in a general setting. On the other hand, a certain rational blowdown along C 2 happens to be diffeomorphic to an honest blowdown of the original 4-manifold: E() 2 ( E() CP 2 #9CP 2 ) is a rational blowdown of E()#CP 2 ( CP 2 #0CP 2 ) along C 2 ([6], Proposition.2, cf. [8], Theorem and Theorem 8..). 5. Examples We apply theorems in previous sections to explicit examples. even Example 5.. Let := F g h Feven h and := V h (2 h g 2) be the relators of M g (g 4) constructed in Section 4 of [5] and ς := Q the positive relator of M g (g 2) constructed in Section 4 of []. Since is obtained by applying an L- substitution to, it turns out from Theorem. that M is a rational blowdown of M along a copy of C 2. The Euler characteristic and the signature of M are equal to 2g 2 +6g+8gh 8h 2 +7 and 6g 2 8g 4gh+4h 2, respectively. M ς νf is simply-connected and ς includes one separating curve. The Euler characteristic and the signature of M ς are 2g 2 +7 and (g 2 +2g+) for even g, and 2g 2 +4g+7 and (g +2) 2 for odd g, respectively. We set M := M # F M ς and M 2 := M # F M ς. It follows from Theorem 4. that M is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to M 2 #CP 2 and both of these do not dissolve. If we use Q n (n 2) instead of Q, we obtain infinitely many pairs of homeomorphic but non-diffeomorphic 4-manifolds for a fixed g( 4). Example 5.2. Let X and X, be the Lefschetz fibrations of genus defined in 4 of [4]. A positive relator (resp. ) representing the monodromy of X (resp. X, ) is given as follows (see Figure, Figure 4, and Figure 2 of [4]). := (c c 2 x c rc 8 c 8 c 4 x 2 c 5 c 6 c 7 ), := (ȳ x tvs 2 c 8 f c 8 s 2 x 2 r ), where we put r := f (c 4 ). We apply elementary transformations and simultaneous conjugations to as follows. = (c c 2 x c rc 8 c 8 c 4 x 2 c 5 c 6 c 7 ) = (c c 2 x c (c 4 ) c 8 c 8 c 4 x 2 c 5 c 6 c 7 ) f (c c 2 x c c 4 c 8 c 8 f (c 4 ) x 2 c 5 c 6 c 7 ) (c c 2 x c c 4 c 8 c 8 f (c 4 ) x 2 c 5 c 6 c 7 ) f ( c (c 2 ) c x c c 4 c 8 c 8 f (c 4 ) x 2 c 5 c 6 c 7 ) ( c (c 2 ) x c c 4 c 8 c 8 f (c 4 ) x 2 c 5 c 6 c 7 c )

Hence Theorem 4. tells us that M, M 2 #CP 2,and#9CP 2 #45CP 2 arehomeomorphicbutmutuallynon-diffeomorphic. We next exhibit an example of lantern substitution for genus 2 fibrations and pose a problem about it. Example 5.. HenceTheorem4.tellsusthatM, M 2 #4CP 2, and#5cp 2 #29CP 2 are homeomorphic but mutually non-diffeomorphic. We denote the manifold M of Example 5. by E. Since E is simply-connected and hasthe Eulercharacteristic2and signature 8, E is homeomorphicto E() = CP 2 #9CP 2 from Freedman s classification theorem. Problem 5.4. Does E decompose into a non-trivial fiber sum of other Lefschetz fibrations? Is E isomorphic to a fiber sum of two copies of Matsumoto s fibration? If E decomposes into a non-trivial fiber sum, then it is not diffeomorphic to E() by virtue of Usher s theorem [9]. Matsumoto s fibration (Example B of []) is a Lefschetz fibration of genus 2 with 6 non-separating, 2 separating singular fibers, and its total space is diffeomorphic to S 2 T 2 #4CP 2. It is easy to see that an appropriately twisted fiber sum of two copies of Matsumoto s fibration is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to E(). Another possible way to examine the manifold E would be to compute the Seiberg-Witten invariants of E by the formula [6] of Fintushel and Stern. 6. Other relations We finally observe effects of substitutions for other relations. Luo [] improved Gervais infinite presentation[7]ofm g toshowthatthesetrofrelatorsisnormally generated by all commutativity, all braid, all 2-chain, and all lantern relators. We briefly review definitions of these relations but lantern relation.
LANTERN RELATIONS AND RATIONAL BLOWDOWNS 9 Let a,b be disjoint essential simple closed curves on Σ g. The relation t a t b = t b t a in M g is called a commutativity relation. A regular neighborhood Σ of a b is the disjoint union of two annuli. Let a,b be simple closed curves on Σ g which intersect transversely at one point. The relation t a t b t a = t b t a t b in M g is called a braid relation. A regular neighborhood Σ of a b is a torus with one boundary component. Let c be a simple closed curve parallel to the boundary of Σ. The relation (t a t b ) 6 = t c in M g is called a chain relation of length 2, or 2-chain relation in short. Both sides of each relation above correspondto Lefschetz fibrations overd 2 with fiber Σ. It is not difficult to draw Kirby diagrams of those manifolds and find out what they are (cf. [8], Chapter 8). We actually obtain the following table. relation manifold for LHS manifold for RHS common boundary commutativity D 4 D 4 D 4 D 4 S S braid X(S 2, 2) X(S 2, 2) RP 2-chain M c (2,,6) X(T 2, ) Σ(2,,6) lantern C 2 B 2 L(4,) The symbol X(B,e) stands for the total space of a D 2 -bundle over B with Euler number e. The Milnor fiber M c (2,,6) and the Brieskorn manifold Σ(2,,6) are defined by M c (2,,6) := {(x,y,z) C x 2 +y +z 6 = ε} D 6, Σ(2,,6) := {(x,y,z) C x 2 +y +z 6 = 0} S 5 (see [8], Figure 8. for Kirby diagram). Substitutions for commutativity and braid relations do not change the original manifold (cf. [20], Figure 4 and [], Appendix A), whereas those for 2-chain and lantern relations do. It might be interesting to extend the table above to that for various other relations such as chain relations of length n( ), the star relation, and Matsumoto s relations [2]. No relation seems to be known to correspond to a rational blowing down process along C p for p. References [] J. Amorós, F. Bogomolov, L. Katzarkov, and T.
