T m f (x) := m(ξ)ˆf (ξ)e ix ξ dξ R n By the use of the Plancherel Theorem it is easy to see that T m is bounded on L 2 (R n ). For p 2, we need some regularity on m for T m to be bounded on L p (R n ).

Unimodular Fourier Multiplier For a measurable function φ : R n R and λ R, consider the unimodular function e iλφ. Fourier multiplier operator corresponding to the function e iλφ gives solutions of IVP in linear PDE for some particular choices of φ.
Unimodular Fourier Multiplier For a measurable function φ : R n R and λ R, consider the unimodular function e iλφ. Fourier multiplier operator corresponding to the function e iλφ gives solutions of IVP in linear PDE for some particular choices of φ. When φ(ξ) = ξ 2, it corresponds to the solution of the linear Schrödinger equation at time λ. For φ(ξ) = ξ, the Fourier multiplier operator is related to the solution of the wave equation.
Hörmander proved that if φ is a C 2 smooth real-valued function and e iλφ Mp(R n ) = O(1) for λ R and p 2, then φ is a linear function.
Hörmander proved that if φ is a C 2 smooth real-valued function and e iλφ Mp(R n ) = O(1) for λ R and p 2, then φ is a linear function. He also conjectured that the above result holds for φ C 1 (R n ). In 1994 V. Lebedev and A. Olevskii [4] settled this conjecture and proved the above result for φ C 1 (R n ).
Bilinear Multiplier Let m(ξ, η) be a bounded measurable function on R n R n and (p, q, r), 0 < p, q, r be a triplet of exponents. Consider the bilinear operator M m initially defined for functions f and g in a suitable dense class by M m (f, g)(x) = ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)m(ξ, η)e 2πix (ξ+η) dξdη. (1) R n R n

(1) R n R n We say that M m is a bilinear multiplier operator for the triplet (p, q, r) if M m extends to a bounded operator from L p (R n ) L q (R n ) into L r (R n ), more precisely M m (f, g) L r (R n ) C f L p (R n ) g L q (R n ) where C is independent of f and g.

Let M p,q,r (R n ) be the space of all bilinear multiplier symbols for the triplet (p, q, r). The norm of m M p,q,r (R n ) is defined to be the norm of the corresponding bilinear multiplier operator M m from L p (R n ) L q (R n ) into L r (R n ), i.e. m Mp,q,r (R n ) = M m L p (R n ) L q (R n ) L r (R n ).
Unimodular Bilinear Multiplier Let φ be a measurable function defined on R n. For f, g S(R n ) consider the bilinear operator B(f, g)(x) := ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)e iφ(ξ,η) e 2πix (ξ+η) dξdη (2) R n R n where φ is a nonlinear function.
Unimodular Bilinear Multiplier Let φ be a measurable function defined on R n. For f, g S(R n ) consider the bilinear operator B(f, g)(x) := ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)e iφ(ξ,η) e 2πix (ξ+η) dξdη (2) R n R n where φ is a nonlinear function. These types of bilinear multipliers arise when we study the solution of the non-linear PDE i t u(t, x) + P(D)u(t, x) = u(x) 2 u(0, x) = f (x), where P(D) is a quadratic homogeneous function of D = ( x1, x2, xn ). The solution of the above PDE is given by u(t, x) = e itp(d) f (x) + t 0 e i(s t)p(d) (u(s,.), u(s,.))(x)ds. It is therefore natural to study the above bilinear operators.
Definition (Local L 2 range) The sets of exponents (p, q, r) satisfying 2 p, q, r and the Hölder condition 1 p + 1 q = 1 r is referred to as the local L 2 range of exponents in the context of bilinear multipliers. We shall use the notation L for this set.
Known Results Theorem F. Bernicot and P. Germain proved the following theorem: [2] Let us assume that η ξ φ 0 ( η 2 η ξ )φ 0 and ξ 2 η ξ φ 0. Then the bilinear oscillatory integral operator 1 T λ (f, g)(x) := ˆf (2π) 1/2 (ξ)ĝ(η)e iλφ(ξ,η) e 2πix (ξ+η) dξdη satisfies the following boundedness: for all exponents p, q, r in the local L 2 range, there exists a constant C = C(p, q, r, φ, m) such that for all λ 0 T λ (f, g) L r C λ 1 2 f L p g L q.
Main Results We study the boundedness of the operator T φ,λ (f, g)(x) := ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)e iλφ(ξ η) e 2πix (ξ+η) dξdη. R n R n
Main Results We study the boundedness of the operator T φ,λ (f, g)(x) := ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)e iλφ(ξ η) e 2πix (ξ+η) dξdη. R n R n Theorem We prove the following theorem Let (p, q, r) be a triplet of exponents outside the local L 2 range and satisfy the Hölder condition. If φ is a C 1 (R n ) smooth real nonlinear function, then e iλφ(ξ η) Mp,q,r (R n ), λ R, λ.
Sketch of the proof Lemma The theorem follows from the following lemma: Let φ : R n R be a measurable function. Suppose that there are N cubes Q k R n, k = 1, 2,..., N such that φ(t) = α k, t + β k for almost all t Q k, the vectors α k, k = 1, 2,..., N are all distinct and β k R n. Then for any unbounded sequence of real numbers {λ m } m N we have where γ = max{ 1 p, 1 q, 1 r }. sup e iλmφ(ξ η) Mp,q,r (R n ) N γ 1 2, (3) m N
Contd. It is easy to check that the R.H.S. of the last inequality clearly blows up when the triplet (p, q, r) lies outside the local L 2 range with 1 p + 1 q = 1 r.
Contd. It is easy to check that the R.H.S. of the last inequality clearly blows up when the triplet (p, q, r) lies outside the local L 2 range with 1 p + 1 q = 1 r. The lemma is based on the following proposition: Proposition Let α = (α 1, α 2,..., α N ) be an N tuple of distinct vectors of R n and ρ > 0 be a positive real number. For vector-valued function f = (f 1, f 2,..., f N ) and g = (g 1, g 2,..., g N ) consider the bilinear operator S α,ρ (f, g)(x) = (f 1 ( + ρα 1 )g 1 ( α 1 ), f 2 ( + ρα 2 )g 2 ( α 2 ),..., f N ( + ρα 1 )g N ( α N ))(x). Then the norm of the operator satisfies the following S α,ρ p,q,r max{n 1/p 1/2, N 1/q 1/2 }.
Counter Examples in Local L 2 region We discuss examples of nonlinear functions φ for which e iφ does not give rise to bilinear multiplier for exponents in the local L 2 range. Therefore, we cannot expect to have a consistent positive result concerning bilinear multipliers of the form e iφ, where φ is a nonlinear function, even in local L 2 range.
Counter Examples in Local L 2 region Case I: Boundary of local L 2 range. The boundary of local L 2 range consists of line segments AC, CB and BA.
Counter Examples in Local L 2 region Case I: Boundary of local L 2 range. The boundary of local L 2 range consists of line segments AC, CB and BA. We show that the function e iξ η cannot be a bilinear multiplier for points on the boundary. Define T (f, g)(x) = ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)e 2iξ η e ix (ξ+η) dξdη. R n R n
Counter Examples in Local L 2 region Case I: Boundary of local L 2 range. The boundary of local L 2 range consists of line segments AC, CB and BA. We show that the function e iξ η cannot be a bilinear multiplier for points on the boundary. Define T (f, g)(x) = ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)e 2iξ η e ix (ξ+η) dξdη. R n R n Define T,1 (h, g), f := T (f, g), h and T,2 (f, h), g := T (f, g), h. It is known that if T is bounded from L p L q into L r, then T,1 is bounded from L r L q into L p and T,2 is bounded from L p L r into L q.
Counter Examples in Local L 2 region Case I: Boundary of local L 2 range. The boundary of local L 2 range consists of line segments AC, CB and BA. We show that the function e iξ η cannot be a bilinear multiplier for points on the boundary. Define T (f, g)(x) = ˆf (ξ)ĝ(η)e 2iξ η e ix (ξ+η) dξdη. R n R n Define T,1 (h, g), f := T (f, g), h and T,2 (f, h), g := T (f, g), h. It is known that if T is bounded from L p L q into L r, then T,1 is bounded from L r L q into L p and T,2 is bounded from L p L r into L q. Using the adjoint operators one can easily conclude that e 2i(ξ+η, η) M r,q,p (Rn ) and e 2i( ξ,η+ξ) M p,r,q (Rn ) with norm exactly the same as that of e 2iξ η.
Counter Examples in Local L 2 region Case II: Interior points. This case follows in a similar fashion. We claim that the function e i( ξ 2 + η 2) does not give rise to a bilinear multiplier for any point in the interior of the region ABC.
Counter Examples in Local L 2 region Case II: Interior points. This case follows in a similar fashion. We claim that the function e i( ξ 2 + η 2) does not give rise to a bilinear multiplier for any point in the interior of the region ABC. Using the symmetry of the function e i( ξ 2 + η 2), it is enough to show that e i( ξ 2 + η 2) / M p,p, p 2 (Rn ) for 2 < p < 4.
