2 Notes for Scientific Notation 1.) The entire purpose of scientific notation is to learn how to write very large numbers or very small numbers in short hand. 2.) If the standard number is greater than one, then the exponent will be positive. Ex. 234 = 2.34 x 10 2 (See positive exponent) 3.) If the standard number is less than one, then the exponent will be negative. Ex = 3.1 x 10-4 (See negative exponent) 4.) The decimal point must end behind the first NON- ZERO digit. Ex = 0.68 x 10-2 NO!!!! Ex = 6.8 x 10-3 YES!!!!!
