1 arxiv:math/055v [math.qa] Dec 00 MULTIPLICATION FORMULAS FOR THE ELLIPTIC GAMMA FUNCTION GIOVANNI FELDER AND ALEXANDER VARCHENKO, Departement Mathematik, ETH-Zentrum, 809 Zürich, Switzerland Department of Mathematics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC , USA Abstract. The elliptic gamma function is a generalization of the Euler gamma function. Its trigonometric and rational degenerations are the Jackson q-gamma function and the Euler gamma function. We prove multiplication formulas for the elliptic gamma function, whose degenerations are the Gauss-Askey multiplication formula for the Euler and trigonometric gamma functions.. Introduction Special functions defined by infinite products often have duplication formulas. Here are some examples. () sin(πz) = sin(πz) sin(π(z + )), Γ(z) π = z Γ(z) Γ(z + ), () (3) Γ q (z) Γ q ( ) = []z q Γ q (z) Γ q (z + ), θ 0 (z,τ) = θ 0 (z,τ) θ 0 (z +,τ) θ 0(z + τ,τ) θ 0(z + +τ,τ). The function Γ(z) = 0 t z e t dt is the Euler gamma function. It satisfies the functional equation Γ(z + ) = z Γ(z). Formula () is Legendre s duplication formula. Date: November 00. Supported in part by NSF grant DMS
2 G. FELDER AND A. VARCHENKO The function Γ q (z) is Jackson s q-gamma function. Set x = e πiz, q = e πiτ, and denote (x;q) = ( xq j ). Then Γ q (z) = Γ trig (z,τ) = ( q) z (q;q) (q z ;q). The q-gamma function obeys the functional equation j=0 Γ q (z +) = [z] q Γ q (z), where [z] q = eπiτ z e πiτ is thetrigonometricanalogofthenumber z. The q-gammafunction degenerates to Euler s gamma function, lim Γ trig(z,τ) = Γ(z). τ 0 Formula () is Askey s duplication formula, see [A]. Thefunctionθ 0 (z,τ) = (x,q)(q/x,q)in(3)isoneofjacobi sthetafunctions. Formula (3) see for instance in [Ra]. In this paper we give two duplication formulas for elliptic analogs of the gamma function, Γ(z,τ,σ) = Γ(z,τ,σ)Γ(z + τ,τ,σ)γ(z + σ Γ(z + +τ,τ,σ)γ(z + Γ(z,τ,σ) Γ(,τ,σ) = ( τ +σ,τ,σ)γ(z +,τ,σ) +σ,τ,σ)γ(z +,τ,σ)γ(z + ) z Γ(z,τ,σ) Γ(z +,τ,σ), +τ +σ,τ,σ), see definitions below. The expression θ 0(zτ,σ) is an elliptic analog of the number z. We have the trigonometric and rational limits of the theta function: θ 0 (zτ,σ) σ i eπiτ z e πiτ τ 0 z.. Elliptic gamma function The elliptic gamma function is an elliptic generalization of the Euler gamma function. It is the meromorphic function of three complex variables z,τ,σ, with Imτ,Imσ > 0 defined by the convergent infinite product Γ(z,τ,σ) = j,k=0 e πi((j+)τ+(k+)σ z) e πi(jτ+kσ+z).
3 THE MULTIPLICATION FORMULA FOR THE ELLIPTIC GAMMA FUNCTION 3 It is the unique solution of a functional equation involving the Jacobi theta function θ 0. Theorem. [FV] Suppose that τ, σ are complex numbers with positive imaginary part. Then u(z) = Γ(z,τ,σ) is the unique meromorphic solution of the difference equation such that: u(z +σ) = θ 0 (z,τ)u(z) (i) u(z) obeys u(z+) = u(z) and is holomorphic on the upper half plane Imz > 0, (ii) u((τ +σ)/) =. The elliptic gamma function first appeared in [R]. The modular properties of the elliptic gamma function and their relations to SL(3, Z) are discussed in [FV], appearances and applications of the elliptic gamma function can be found in [B, DP, JMN, JKKMW, FTV, FV, FV3, FV4]. Let Γ be the function Γ(z,τ,σ) = (q;q) (r;r) θ 0(τ,σ) z Γ(zτ,τ,σ), q = e πiτ, r = e πiσ. Then u(z) = Γ(z,τ,σ) is a solution of the functional equation u(z +) = θ 0(τz,σ) u(z). The normalization was chosen here so that u() =. As σ i we recover Jackson s q-gamma function, Γ trig (z,τ) = lim Γ(z,τ,σ). σ i 3.. The first multiplication formula. Theorem. For any natural n we have 3. Multiplication Formulas Γ(nz,τ,σ) = n k,k,k 3 =0 Γ(z + k +k τ +k 3 σ,τ,σ). n
4 4 G. FELDER AND A. VARCHENKO Proof. Let w = e πi/n. Then the right hand side of this formula is n w k q l+n k n r m+n k 3 n x k,k,k 3 =0 = n k,k 3 =0 w k q l+ k n r m+k 3 n x q (l+)n k r (m+)n k 3 x n q ln+k r mn+k 3x n = q l+ r m+ x n q l r m x n = Γ(nz,τ,σ). 3.. The second multiplication formula. Theorem. For any natural n we have Γ(nz,τ,σ) Γ( n,nτ,σ) Γ( n,nτ,σ)... n Γ( n,nτ,σ) = ( ) nz θ 0 (nτ,σ) Γ(z,nτ,σ) Γ(z + n,nτ,σ) Γ(z + n,nτ,σ)... n Γ(z + n,nτ,σ). The theorem is an easy consequence of the following two lemmas. Lemma. For any natural m and n, we have Γ(z,τ,σ) = m n Γ(z +aτ +bσ,mτ,nσ). a=0 b=0 Lemma. For any natural n, we have Γ(τ,nτ,σ) Γ(τ,nτ,σ)... Γ((n )τ,nτ,σ) = (q,q n )(q,q n )...(q n,q n ). References [A] R. Askey, The q-gamma and q-beta functions, Applicable Anal. 8 (978/79), no., 5 4.
