On the SU() Parametrization of Qutrits arxiv:quant-ph/5v Nov 5 A. T. Bölükbaşı, T. Dereli Department of Physics, Koç University 445 Sarıyer, İstanbul, Turkey Abstract Parametrization of qutrits on the complex projective plane CP = SU()/U() is given explicitly. A set of constraints that characterize mixed state density matrices is found. Many recent ideas of quantum information theory are based on the notion of qubits. A qubit may be represented by a point on the Poincaré sphere S that is homeomorhic to the complex projective line H () = CP = SU()/U(). A similar parametrization in the case of higher dimensional quantum systems is desirable both from theoretical [] and technical points of view [], []. A qutrit may be represented by a point on the complex projective plane H () = CP = SU()/U(). Such a representation is given explicitly in terms of Gell-Mann matrices [4]. We determine a set of constraints that characterize mixed states of qutrits below. A qutrit ψ >= α > +α > +α >where α,α,α C, α + α + α =, is a state vector in the Hilbert space of states H () of a -level system. It is spanned by an orthonormal basis { >, >, >} which in matrix notation reads >, >, > Therefore ψ > α α α C R 6. Since α + α + α = and since ψ > is determined up to a multiplicative phase factor, dimh () = 4. Paper presented at The th Central European Workshop on Quantum Optics, 6-9 June 5, Ankara, Turkey. 2 Any density matrix can be written as ρ = (I + n λ) where nisareal8-vector, andcomponentsof λarethe(hermitian, traceless) Gell-Mann matrices i λ =, λ = i, λ 4 =, λ 5 = i i λ =, λ 6 =, λ 8 =, λ 7 = The product of two Gell-Mann matrices is given by i i, λ j λ k = δ jk + l d jkl λ l +i l f jkl λ l where j,k =,,...,8. The f-symbols (structure constants of the Lie algebra su()) are totally anti-symmetric : f =,f 458 = f 678 =, f 47 = f 46 = f 57 = f 45 = f 56 = f 67 =, and the d-symbols are totally symmetric: d 8 = d 8 = d 8 = d 888 =, d 448 = d 558 = d 668 = d 778 =, d 46 = d 57 = d 47 = d 56 = d 44 = d 55 = d 66 = d 77 =. Given two real 8-vectors a and b, we define their Euclidean inner product a b = k a k b k,
skew-symmetric vector -product ( a b) j = k,l f jkl a k b l, and symmetric vector -product ( a b) j = k,l d jkl a k b l. The pure states that satisfy ρ = ρ are therefore characterized by n = and n n = n. Suppose that ρ = (I + n λ) is the density matrix of a mixed state. It is Hermitian, positive with trace equal to. Therefore all the eigenvalues x,x,x arepositiveandaddtoone: x +x +x =. TheCayley-Hamilton equation satisfied by ρ reads ρ ρ +(x x +x x +x x )ρ x x x I =. The following inequalities hold: x x +x x +x x, 7 x x x. Starting from these, a straightforward computation shows that the necessary and sufficient conditions for ρ = (I + n λ) to be a density matrix of a mixed state are given by n and n n ( n n). An arbitrary diagonal density matrix of a -level system will be ρ = (I + (n λ +n 8 λ 8 )). In this case, the mixed-state density matrix constraints reduce to n +n 8 and n 8 6n n 8 +n +n 8. The region in the n n 8 -plane where both the constraints are satisfied is bound by an equilateral triangle with vertices at the points (n,n 8 ) R = (, ),(n,n 8 ) B = (, ),
(n,n 8 ) G = (, ). Vertices of the above triangle correspond to three mutually orthogonal purestates. We labeled them Red, Blue, Green in analogy with colored quarks []. In fact two pure-state vectors ψ > and ψ > are orthogonal if and only if < ψ ψ >=, so that Tr(ρρ ) =. This implies n n =. Then arccos( n n ) = ± π. This is equal to the geodesic distance between two orthogonal pure-states as measured by the standard Fubini-Study metric on CP. Points on the edges of the triangle correspond to mixing of two orthogonal pure-states of qutrits. In particular, at mid-points where bi-sectors intersect with the edges we have (n,n 8 ) C = (, ) (n,n 8 ) A = (,(n,n 8 ) B = (, 4 ) 4, 4 ), 4
Triply mixed-states correspond to points inside the triangle. In particular the origin (n,n 8 ) O = (,) corresponds to the maximally mixed state. For -level systems, the orbit of any diagonal density matrix of qubits ρ = ( ) +n (,,n n ) under the action of the unitary group SU(), ρ UρU where U SU() (i.e. adjoint representation of SU(), which is SO() applied on n ) sweeps the whole Poincaré sphere S. Adjoint representation Ad of a given U SU() is explicitly Ad(U) ij = Tr(σ iuσ j U ) SO(), so that n j Ad(U) jk n k. In a similar way, for -level systems the orbit of each point (n,n 8 ) of the above triangle under the unitary action of SU() (i.e. adjoint representation of SU()) will provide a generalization of the Poincaré sphere to -level systems. Adjoint representation Ad of a given U SU() is found as follows: so that Ad(U) ij = Tr(λ iuλ j U ) SO(8) n j Ad(U) jk n k. In fact Ad(SU()) is an 8-parameter subgroup of the 8-parameter rotation group SO(8). We also consider the entropy of mixing of ρ defined as E(ρ) = x log (x ) x log (x ) x log (x ). Since in diagonal form ρ = + n +n 8 n +n 8 5 n 8,
the entropy of mixing of ρ becomes E(ρ) = ( + n +n 8 )log ( + n +n 8 ) ( n +n 8 ( n 8 )log ( n 8 ). The equi-mixing curves in the n n 8 -plane are shown on the following diagram: )log ( n +n 8 ) Acknowledgement We thank Professor A. Shumovsky for bringing Ref.[] to our attention and Professor V.
