SHARP COMPLEX CONVEXIY ESIMAES ALEXANDER LINDENBERGER, PAUL F. X. MÜLLER, AND MICHAEL SCHMUCKENSCHLÄGER Abstract. In this paper we determine the value of the best constants in the -uniform P L-convexity estimates of C. his solves a problem posed by W. J. Davis, D. J. H. Garling and N. omczak-jaegermann [. arxiv:9.796v [math.cv 3 Jan 9. Introduction Quoting from the book of Pisier [7, section.9, Haagerup was the first who noticed the importance of the sharp inequality x + y x + ζy dmζ for x,y C, where denotes the complex unit circle and m the usual Haar measure on with m =. W. J. Davis, D. J. H. Garling and N. omczak-jaegermann [, Proposition 3. present a proof of based on the power series representation of elliptic integrals. U. Haagerup and G. Pisier obtained an extension of to non-commutative H -spaces in [3. W. J. Davis, D. J. H. Garling and N. omczak-jaegermann [, Problem 4 conjecture, that, for α,, the inequality x + α α y x + ζy dmζ α for x,y C holds true and that the constant α is sharp. In this paper we give a proof of this conjecture. In [ the notion of uniform P L-convexity is introduced for continuously quasinormed vector spaces over the complex numbers. For r [,, such a space E, is called r-uniformly P L-convex, if and only if for any α, there exists a λ >, such that 3 x r + λ y r α r x + ζy dmζ α for x,y E. he largest possible value of λ satisfying 3 is then denoted by I r,α E. Using this notion, C itself is -uniformly P L-convex and it is easily seen, that I,α C = for α. We thus identify the value of I,α C for each α, by proving the following theorem: heorem.. Let α, and λ α. We have 4 x + λ y α x + ζy dmζ α for x,y C, Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 6G4; Secondary 3U5. Key words and phrases. martingale inequalities, complex convexity, best constants. he research for this paper was conducted while the first named author was preparing his Master s thesis at the Department of Analysis, Johannes Kepler University Linz. he first and the second named authors were supported by the Austrian Science Foundation FWF Pr.Nr P835-N3.
ALEXANDER LINDENBERGER, PAUL F. X. MÜLLER, AND MICHAEL SCHMUCKENSCHLÄGER and α is the best i. e. largest real constant satisfying 4.. Preliminaries In this section we collect three main ingredients employed in the proof of heorem.. he proof of I, = given in [ relies on the power series representation of elliptic integrals and seems difficult to generalize. In 994 the third named author gave an alternative proof, using techniques of stochastic analysis. he main idea was rewriting the line integral on the right-hand side of as an area integral. For general α this reads as follows. Lemma.. For α, and y >, we have + yζ α dmζ = + α y + yz α Gzdz, D where D denotes the complex unit disk and G Green s function of this domain and pole, so Gz = π ln z for each z D. Next we recall the inequality of arithmetic and geometric means in the form used below. For details we refer to [4, section 6.7. heorem. AM-GM inequality. Let f : R be non-negative almost everywhere on and measurable. Let r be a positive real number. hen we have 5 if all these integrals exist. r f dm r exp lnf dm r f dm r, he usefulness of the AM-GM inequality is due to the fact, that for our specific functions, the geometric mean is easier to calculate than the arithmetic means. Indeed we can evaluate the geometric mean using the familiar Jensen formula see [, p For integrals over the complex unit circle, it has the following form. heorem. Jensen s formula. Let f : U C be analytic on a domain U C, where U contains the closed unit disk D. Let a,a,...,a n be the zeros of f in the interior of D repeated according to multiplicity. Assuming f, we have ln f ζ dmζ = ln f + n i= ln a i. 3. Proof of heorem. Using the tools collected in section, we can now give a proof of heorem.. Note that for x = or y =, the inequality 4 is trivial. Hence, by rescaling and rotation, it suffices to show, that 6 α + yζ α dmζ + λy holds for λ = α and does not hold for λ > α. for each y >
SHARP COMPLEX CONVEXIY ESIMAES 3 We first show, that λ = α satisfies 6. o this end, we define functions a,h,g : [, R by ay := + yζ α dmζ, + α 4 y, y [, α hy := 4 + y α α α lny, y, α y α, y, α gy := + α α y and show 7 ay hy gy for y > a h g Α a h g Α a h g Α Figure. Plots of the functions a,h,g with different values of α herefore, we fix y > and distinguish three cases, according to the definition of h. Case y :: α Using the AM-GM inequality and applying Jensen s formula to the analytic function z + yz yield α + yζ α dmζ exp ln + yζ dmζ = expmax{,lny} = max{,y}. In this case, we particularly have y, so we conclude ay y α = hy. On the other hand, y α implies hy = y α + α α y = gy. For the other two cases, we use the alternative representation of a obtained by Lemma., i. e. ay = + α y + yz α Gzdz D = + α y + yrζ α dmζr ln r dr. We note α, so the AM-GM inequality for negative exponents and Jensen s formula, applied to the analytic function z + yrz, yield + yrζ α α dmζ exp ln + yrζ dmζ = max{,yr}.
4 ALEXANDER LINDENBERGER, PAUL F. X. MÜLLER, AND MICHAEL SCHMUCKENSCHLÄGER Hence, we arrive at ay + α y min {,yr α } r ln r dr. Case y, α :: By calculation, we obtain min {,yr α } r ln r dr = y r ln r dr + yα r α ln r dr herefore, we have = + lny 4y ay α 4 + y α α y + y α α + α lny α y α α lny = hy. he inequality hy gy is an exercise in elementary calculus, carried through in the appendix Lemma 4. with β := α and t := y. Case y :: Here, the integral simplifies to min {,yr α } r ln r dr = r ln r dr = 4. Consequently, we have ay + α 4 y = hy. he inequality hy gy is again verified by elementary calculus Lemma 4. with β := α and t := y. It remains to show, that α is the largest constant satisfying 6. o this end, we fix λ R, define by := + λy α for each y, and assume ay by for y >. Obviously, we have a = b = and a short calculation shows a = b =. From the assumption, we now conclude a b. Using a = α and b = αλ, we obtain λ α.. 4. Appendix 4.. Proof of Lemma.. We give a proof of the identity obtained and exploited by the third named author, i. e. 8 + yζ α dmζ = + α y + yz α Gzdz for y >,α,. D Here we use techniques of stochastic analysis. Alternatively, one could obtain 8 using Gauss s divergence theorem. See for instance [6, p Let B t t = B t + ib t be a complex Brownian motion started at the origin t and τ := inf{t > : B t > }. We then have + yζ α dmζ = E[ + yb τ α.
SHARP COMPLEX CONVEXIY ESIMAES 5 Applying Itô s formula to the continuous martingale + yb t t> gives t t + yb t α = + αy + yb s + yb s α db s + αy B s + yb s α db s + α y t + yb s α ds, whenever t < τ, and hence [ τ E[ + yb τ α = + α y E + yb s α ds Let G denote Green s function of the unit disk with pole. Using the occupation time formula for the Brownian motion [5, heorem 3.3, section 3.3, p. 8, we obtain [ τ + α y E + yb s α ds = + α y + yz α Gzdz. D 4.. Elementary estimates. Here we collect and prove the elementary estimates used in section 3. We begin with a special case of the classical Bernoulli inequality for real exponents. Lemma 4. Bernoulli s inequality. Let β [, and t >. We have + β t + βt β. Proof. aylor s theorem, applied to φt := + βt β, guarantees the existence of a ξ [,t, such that φt = φ + φ t + φ ξ t = + β t + β 3 β + βξ β t. Using this ξ, we obtain + β t + βt β = β 3 β + βξ β t. Lemma 4.. Let β [, and t [, β. We have β + t β β βlnt + βt β. Proof. aylor s theorem, applied to φt := β +t β β βlnt +βt β, guarantees the existence of a ξ [,t, such that φt = φ+t φ ξ = β + +β β +t β ξ β βξ β + βξ β. From Lemma 4. we know ξ [, β implies ξ + βξ and thus β + + β β. ξ β βξ β + βξ β ξ β βξ βξ β = β ξ β ξ..
