2 . Introduction Additional Higgs bosons H ± appear in many extensions of te standard model (SM), in particular wen adding additional doublets or triplets to its scalar sector. Typically, te focus is on -Higgs-doublet models (HDMs) including te special case of te Higgs sector of te minimal supersymmetric extension of te standard model (MSSM). In te MSSM, te dominant production mode for a carged Higgs boson is in top quark decays if kinematically allowed, or in association wit a top quark oterwise. Neutral Higgs bosons are dominantly produced via gluon fusion (for low values of, te ratio of te vacuum expectation values of te two Higgs doublets) and in association wit bottom quarks (intermediate and ig tan β). However, non-standard production and decay modes may become dominant in oter HDMs or for specific relations between te Higgs boson masses, allowing e.g. Higgs-to-Higgs decays. Oter beyond-te-standard-model (BSM) Higgs sectors offer an even larger variety: for example, te next-to-mssm (NMSSM) predicts two neutral Higgs bosons in addition to te MSSM wic could be relatively ligt witout violating existing bounds; and models wit Higgs triplets predict among oters doubly-carged Higgs bosons.. Carged Higgs boson (H ± ) searces are primarily motivated by te MSSM but te results are also given in a largely model-independent way, i.e. in terms of cross section limits. Tere is also an increasing number of non-mssm searces, e.g. for carged Higgs boson production in vector boson fusion []. For masses below te top quark mass, a carged Higgs boson would be dominantly produced in top quark decays. Terefore, te production cross section is proportional to te top quark pair production times te brancing ratio t H b. Te dominant mode of H ± production for ± > m t in a HDM is via te process pp th ± X [,, 4, 5, 6]. Recent progress on teory side as led to te first consistent NLO calculations also for te so-called intermediatemass region [], i.e. te region were te contributions wit and witout intermediate on-sell top quarks are of similar size. Tis region is of particular interest because MSSM models were
3 ± ± Summary of recent progress in searces for additional Higgs bosons te eavy neutral scalar as a mass of 5 GeV and te ligt Higgs boson can act as mediator to dark matter typically ave a carged Higgs boson mass in tis region. In te MSSM, te most sensitive H ± decay mode is to a τ lepton and a neutrino [7, 8], except for very low values of tan β. If kinematically allowed, decays to tb are typically similarly abundant, owever, reconstructing suc events is experimentally even more callenging [9]. An MSSM interpretation of te obtained limits is given in Fig.. Previous limits ave been extended from several undreds of GeV to one TeV (for te same value of ) in te last two years, marking tremendous progress since te last worksop. Tese results also mark te first results for te intermediate-mass region. Several oter ways to searc for carged Higgs bosons ave been proposed to te experimental collaborations at tis worksop. Examples are carged Higgs boson decays to Wγ [], H ± production in cs fusion in a HDM [], or carged Higgs boson decays to neutralinos and carginos [].. Doubly-carged Higgs bosons Doubly-carged Higgs bosons H are for example predicted by models wit Higgs triplets suc as left-rigt symmetric models or te Georgi-Macacek model, and te Zee-Babu model wic only adds two singlets to te SM. Variants of tese models can serve to explain te tiny observed neutrino masses or to restore parity symmetry in weak interactions at ig energy. Models wit triplets do not automatically lead to te observed value of ρ M W close to unity, cos θ W MZ as models wit only additional singlets and doublets do, and are tus more or less severely constrained. For several models, te main H production mecanism at te LHC is via qq Z/γ H H or qq W H H. Searces at te LHC focus at H decays to leptons [4, 5] or W bosons [6]. Te H coupling to leptons is typically not proportional to te lepton mass and te focus is tus on ligt leptons wic can be andled more easily experimentally. Te result of some of te LHC searces are illustrated in Fig.. Depending on models and assumed brancing ratios, typically H below GeV to 9 GeV are excluded. 4 4. Additional neutral Higgs bosons Additional neutral Higgs bosons are te ingredient of virtually every model wit an extended Higgs sector. Te main motivation for searces for tese particles is traditionally te MSSM; owever, te portfolio as been significantly extended since te LHC start. In addition, te MSSM searces can be reinterpreted in te context of oter models. Te main LHC production mode for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons are associated production wit b quarks (intermediate and ig ) as well as gluon fusion (low ). For all but very low values, decays to τ leptons are te most sensitive experimental probe [7, 8] wit decays to bottom quarks adding additional sensitivity [9], as sown in Fig.. Since te last worksop, te excluded region as been significantly extended, reacing up to.6 TeV at ig. At tis worksop, adding te investigation of neutral Higgs boson decays to neutralinos or carginos to te portfolio [] and investigating te impact of CP-violating effects [] as been proposed. s = TeV, 6. fb mod- MSSM scenario, M SUSY H/A ττ 95% CL limits = 6.5 GeV = GeV = GeV = 6. In models wit additional Higgs bosons wit masses below about 6.5 GeV, te 5-GeV Higgs boson can decay to tese Higgs bosons, aa. Searces for tese ligt Higgs bosons are often motivated by te NMSSM but te results can be interpreted in a generic way. Tese bosons ten dominantly decay to te eaviest particles kinematically allowed, leading to a variety of searc modes [, ]. Te results of two suc searces are sown in Fig. 4. Generically, ligt Higgs bosons are searced for in γγ decays in te mass range 65 GeV GeV. Here, a sligt excess of events is observed for m γγ 95 by [] wic is not confirmed by [4], see Fig. 5. Similarly, generic Higgs boson searces are extended to ig masses up to 4 TeV in te WW [5] and ZZ [6] decay modes. Examples for te MSSM scenarios MSSM () [9] and m mod () [] are given in Fig. 8. Prospects at future colliders Sensitivity projections for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons are sown in Fig. 9 for te LHC and a future pp-collider. Wile te LHC will be able to probe a region up to TeV at intermediate and ig using ττ decays of te Higgs boson, a future collider will be able to probe te region up to about 5 TeV for all, combining te information from different final states. 8. Summary Wile so far none of te searces for additional Higgs bosons revealed a significant deviation from te SM expectation, te remaining parameter space as been strongly limited in te last two years wit an increased amount of analyzed LHC data at s = TeV, and te increasing number of models and final states investigated. Te LHC and future colliders will furter pus tese boundaries in te coming decades, aving te sensitivity to discover additional Higgs bosons. 5
