Then a flat Ehresmann connection on a fiber bundle ξ yields two complementary, but not orthogonally, Dirac structures on the total space M of ξ. These Dirac structures are also Lagrangian subbundles with respect to the natural almost symplectic structure of the big tangent bundle of M. The tangent bundle in Riemannian geometry is discussed as particular case and the 3-dimensional Heisenberg space is illustrated as example. More generally, we study the Bianchi Cartan Vranceanu metrics and their Hopf bundles. Keywords: Big tangent bundle; Courant bracket; (almost) Dirac structure; Lie integrability. Mathematics Subject Classification 010: 53C60, 53C05, 53C15, 53C0, 53C55, 53D18 Fix M a smooth and connected m -dimensional manifold with the tangent bundle TM and cotangent bundle T M.TheC (M)-module of sections of these bundles are: X (M) =Γ(TM) the Lie algebra of vector fields on M and Ω 1 (M) = Γ(T M) the real linear space of 1-forms on M. The manifold T big M := TM T M is called big tangent bundle in [8] and the Pontryagin bundle of M in [5]; for simplicity we will use the first name. This manifold is the total space of a vector bundle π : T big M TM with π the first projection and Γ(T big M)=X (M) Ω 1 (M) is endowed with the Courant structure (,, [, ]), []: (1) the (neutral) inner product: (X, α), (Y,β) = 1 (β(x)+α(y)), (1)
M. Crasmareanu () the (skew-symmetric) Courant bracket: [(X, α), (Y,β)] = ([X, Y ], L X β L Y α 1 ) d(β(x) α(y )), () where L X is the Lie derivative with respect to the vector field X X(M). Definition 1 ([]). A vector sub-bundle L of T big M which is, -isotropic and of maximal rank m is called almost Dirac structure on M. If, in addition, the C (M)-module Γ(L) of sections of L is [, ]-integrable then L is adiracstructure. Two associated notions are: (1) a pair of complementary Dirac subspaces is called areflector([4, 8]) or Manin triple in [6], () if L is a Dirac structure on M then the triple (L, [, ] L,pr : L TM)isaLie algebroid on M ([, Theorem.3.4]). Fix F a vector sub-bundle of TM and denote by F 0 its annihilator, that means the vector sub-bundle of T M which vanish on F.ThenL F = F F 0 is a vector sub-bundle of rank m of T big M. The main result of this short note is a version of [8, Example.3]. Theorem. L F is an almost Dirac structure which is Dirac on M if and only if F is Lie integrable. Proof. L F is maximally isotropic with respect to the inner product (1). Suppose now that F is Lie integrable; then it defines a foliation F of M. The elements of Γ(F 0 ) are 1-forms which vanish by restriction to each leaf of F. Also, their exterior derivative induce zero -forms on the leaves of F. Using these facts, it results that the Courant bracket of any two sections of L F is: [(X, α), (Y,β)] = ([X, Y ], 0), which yields the conclusion about the Dirac structure of L F. Conversely, if L F is a Dirac structure from the Lie algebroid structure of L F we get that pr(l F ) is an integrable generalized distribution in the Stefan Sussman sense. But here pr(l F ) being exactly F is a true vector sub-bundle of TM i.e. of constant rank and then the Stefan Sussman integrability is exactly the Lie-Frobenius one. Example 3 (Ehresmann connection). Let ξ =(M,π,B,F) be a fiber bundle; we use the approach of [1, p. 105]. Let n be the dimension of B and x =(x i ;1 i n), respectively y =(y α ;1 α m n) the coordinates on B respectively F. Then, (x, y) =(x i,y α ) are the coordinates on M. Applying the tangent functor to the bundle ξ we get Tπ : TM TB andthenthekerneloftπ is a vector bundle over M denoted T V,π M and called the vertical bundle of ξ. Its space of sections Γ(T V,π M) is spanned by { y α }
Dirac Structures from Lie Integrability Let an Ehresmann connection E on ξ with the horizontal vector sub-bundle T H,π M over M, complementary to T V,π M in TM,[1, p. 107]. It results the existence of smooth functions {Ni α (x, y)} on M, called the coefficients of connection, such that Γ(T H,π M) is spanned by { δ δx = i x N α i i y }. α Let TV,π M be the annihilator of F 1 = T V,π M;thenΓ(TV,π M) is spanned by {dx i }. Similarly, let TH,π M be the annihilator of F = T H,π M;itresultsΓ(TH,π M) is spanned by {δy α = dy α + Ni αdxi }. Our main objects in the following are the vector bundles over M : L F1 = V D (π, E) =(T V,π M,TV,π M), respectively L F = H D (π, E) =(T H,π M,TH,π M). The rank of both is m. We compute: L δ δyα = Rikdx α k Nα i δx i y ρ δyρ, L dxj =0, (3) y α where R is the curvature of the Ehresmann connection E: R α ij = δnα i δx j δnα j δx i (4) provided by the condition of Lie integrability of the distribution Γ(T H,π M): [ ] δ δx i, δ δx j = Rij α y α. (5) Since T V,π M is integrable it results: Corollary 4. V D (π, E) is a Dirac structure on M. H D (π, E) is an almost Dirac structure which is Dirac if and only if the connection E is flat. It results that a flat connection yields a Manin triple: T big M = V D (π, E) H D (π, E) (6) in analogy with the decomposition of the tangent bundle provided by the Ehresmann connection: TM = T V,π M T H,π M. (7) From: ( ) ( ) δ y α,dxi, δx j,δyβ = 1 (δi j + δα) β (8) we get that the decomposition (6) is not, -orthogonally. Therefore, we obtain two Lie algebroids over M provided by a flat connection. On this example we will treat other two main constructions of []. Firstly, let π : T big TM T M be the canonical second projection. Relation (..3 4) of [, p. 645] states that for a general almost Dirac structure we have: π(l) =L T M and π (L) =(L TM) 0 and a skew-symmetric map Ω : π(l) π (L) is derived with the formula: Ω(π(u)) = π (u) π(l). In our framework we get: π(l F )=F and
M. Crasmareanu π (L F )=F 0.Also,wehave: (1) Ω V : T V,π M TV,π M is Ω( y α (x,y) )=dx i (x,y), () Ω H : T H,π M TH,π δ M is Ω( δx i (x,y) )=δy α (x,y), for every (x, y) M since as it is pointed out several times in [] in the manifold case we need to work pointwise. Secondly, a function f C (M) is called admissible ([, p. 650]) or Hamiltonian ([8]) if there exists a vector field X f X(M) such that (X f,df) Γ(L) andthen X f is called the Hamiltonian vector field of f and a bracket on admissible functions is given by {f,g} = X f (g). So, for T V,π M we get that the coordinate functions x i are admissible functions and the bracket is trivial: {x i,x j } = xj =0, (9) yα where y is the Hamiltonian vector field of f = x i since ( α y,dx i ) Γ(T α V,π M). T H,π M has {y α } as admissible functions only if the Ehresmann connection has vanishing coefficients, i.e. Ni α =0,inwhichcase δ δx = i x are the corresponding i Hamiltonian vector fields and again the bracket is trivial. Particular Case 5 (Riemannian geometry). Suppose that ξ is exactly the tangent bundle of B i.e. M = TB.Thenm =n, F = R n and α = k. Every Riemannian metric g on B gives rise to the Levi-Civita connection E where Ni k = Γ k ia (x)ya,with(γ k ij ) being the Christoffel symbols of g. Then, a flat Riemannian metric on B yields two complementary Dirac structures on TB. Let us remark that some classes of Dirac structures naturally associated to Lagrangian systems appear in [11]. Remark 6 (The almost symplectic point of view). Let us recall that the big tangent bundle has also a non-degenerate skew-symmetric -form, [8]: Ω((X, α), (Y,β)) = 1 (β(x) α(y )). (10) From: (( ) ( )) (( ) ( )) δ δ Ω y α,dxi, y β,dxj =0, Ω δx i,δyα, δx j,δyβ = 0 (11) we get that the complementary Dirac structures V D (π, E) and H D (π, E) are Ω-Lagrangian sub-bundles of T big M. Example 7. Let H 3 be the 3-dimensional Heisenberg space, [3]; recall that H 3 = (R 3,g) with the Riemannian metric: ( g = dx + dy + dz + y dx x ) dy. (1) An orthonormal basis of left-invariant vector fields on this Lie group is: X 1 = x y z, X = y + x z, X 3 = z (13)
Dirac Structures from Lie Integrability with the dual frame: θ 1 = dx, θ = dy, θ 3 = dz + y dx x dy. (14) Let (x, y, z, X, Y, Z) be the coordinates on TH 3 and (x, y, z, p x,p y,p z )thecoordinates on T H 3 ;thent big H 3 has the coordinates (x, y, z, X, Y, Z, p x,p y,p z ). Let the locally trivial fiber bundle π : M = H 3 B = R, π(x, y, z) =(x, y), then m =3andn =. Fix the connection E = E g such that T H,π H 3 is the g-orthogonal complement of T V,π H 3. Then Γ(T V,π H 3 ) is spanned by X 3 while Γ(TV,π H 3) is spanned by {θ 1,θ }; Γ(T H,π H 3 ) is spanned by { δ δx = X 1, δ δy = X } and Γ(TH,π H 3) is spanned by {θ 3 }. We get the coefficients of the connection: N1 1 = y, N1 = x (15) and therefore the curvature is: R1 1 = R1 1 =1. (16) (Of course, we know that g is not a flat metric but we include these computations in order to illustrate completely this example.) In conclusion, the only Dirac structure provided by Corollary 4 on H 3 is: V D (π, E g )={(x, y, z, 0, 0,Z,p x,p y, 0) T big H 3 } (17) while: {( H D (π, E g )= x, y, z, X y Z, Y + x Z, 0, 0, 0,p z + y p x x ) } p y T big H 3 is an almost Dirac structure on H 3. (18) Example 8. Fix k and τ two real numbers and denotes by Mk 3 the manifold {(x, y, z) R 3 ; F (x, y, z) =1+k(x + y ) > 0}. We shall consider on Mk 3 the Bianchi Cartan Vranceanu metric, [9, p. 343]: g k,τ = 1 F dx + 1 ( F dy + dz + τy ) τx dx F F dy. (19) For k =0andτ = 1 we get the previous example; for other remarkable examples as well as the history of these metrics see [9]. An orthonormal basis in X (Mk 3)is: X 1 = F x τy z, X = F y + τx z, X 3 = z (0) with the dual frame: θ 1 = dx F, θ = dy F, θ 3 = dz + τy τx dx dy. F F (1) Let Mk = {(x, y) R ; F (x, y) > 0} with the metric g k = dx +dy F. Then the map π :(Mk 3,g k,τ) (Mk,g k), π(x, y, z) =(x, y) being a Riemannian submersion yields
M. Crasmareanu a fiber bundle called Hopf bundle in [9, p. 344] since for k = τ 4 we get the Hopf fibration π : S 3 (k) S (4k). Again, let the connection E = E g such that T H,π Mk 3 is the g k,τ -orthogonal complement of T V,π Mk 3. Then Γ(T V,π Mk 3) is spanned by X 3 while Γ(TV,π M k 3 ) is spanned by {δx = Fθ 1,δy = Fθ };Γ(T H,π Mk 3 δ ) is spanned by { δx = 1 F X 1, δ δy = 1 F X } and Γ(TH,π M k 3) is spanned by {θ 3 }. We get the coefficients of the connection: N1 1 = τy F, N1 = τx () F and therefore the curvature is: R1 1 = R1 1 = τ F. (3) In conclusion, the only Dirac structure provided by Corollary 4 on Mk 3 is: while: H D (π, E g )= V D (π, E g )={(x, y, z, 0, 0,Z,p x,p y, 0) T big M 3 k } (4) {( x, y, z, X τy τx Z, Y + F F Z, 0, 0, 0,p z + τy F p x τx ) } F p y T big Mk 3 is an almost Dirac structure on M 3 k. Remark 9 (A relationship with previous works). Returning to the general framework, let us recall that a connection on ξ is equivalent with an almost product structure P on M such that T V,π M is the eigenbundle corresponding to the eigenvalue 1 ofp while T H,π M is the eigenbundle corresponding to the eigenvalue +1 of P : P ( ) x i = x i N i α y α, P (5) ( ) y α = y α. (6) So, our Corollary 4 can be thought in correspondence with Example 4 from [10, p. 894]; the present result is more efficient than Proposition.3 of [10, p. 891] since one of the generated almost Dirac structure is in fact already Dirac. The flatness of the connection is equivalent with the integrability of P expressed as the vanishing of the Nijenhuis tensor of P and then we recover the Theorem 3.3 of [10, p. 89]. References [1] A.
