Solions saring from small compacly sppored l-eqivarian iniial daa wih l are shown o decay as l+) a fre imelike infiniy and as l+) a fre nll infiniy. I. INTRODUCTION arxiv:96.99v gr-qc] 6 Jn 9 In his paper we conine or invesigaions, iniiaed in ], of he precise qaniaive descripion of he laeime asympoic behavior of self-graviaing massless fields. In ] we considered he simples case of a spherically symmeric massless scalar field. Using nonlinear perrbaion analysis we showed ha solions saring from small iniial daa decay as 3 a imelike infiniy and as a nll infiniy. We also derived a simple analyic formla for he amplide of he lae-ime ail in erms of iniial daa. Here we sdy he analogos problem for wave maps which are a naral geomeric generalizaion of he wave eqaion for he massless scalar field. This generalizaion seems ineresing becase in he so called eqivarian case he homoopy index l of he map plays he role similar o he mlipole index for spherical harmonics. However, in conras o he decomposiion of a scalar field ino spherical harmonics which makes sense only a he linearized level, i is consisen o sdy nonlinear evolion for he wave map wihin a fixed eqivariance class. In his sense l-eqivarian self-graviaing wave maps can serve as a poor man s oy-model of non-spherical collapse. The l = case redces o he spherically symmeric massless scalar field analyzed in ] so hereafer we assme ha l. We noe aside ha he l = case has been exensively sdied in he pas focsing on he criical behavior a he hreshold of black hole formaion, 3, 4, 5, 6], however, o or knowledge, he lae-ime behavior of wave maps copled o graviy has no been analyzed before. Using he same hird-order perrbaion mehod as in ] we show here ha for small compacly sppored iniial daa he lae-ime ail of he self-graviaing l-eqivarian wave map decays as l+) a fre imelike infiniy and as l+) a fre nll infiniy. We also compe he amplide of he ail in erms of iniial daa. These analyic resls are verified by he nmerical inegraion of he Einsein-wave map eqaions. II. For his ansaz, he energy-momenm ensor ) does no depend on angles and hs can be consisenly copled o he spherically symmeric Einsein eqaions. We noe in passing ha a very similar idea of inrodcing he anglar momenm ino spherical collapse was p forward by Olabarriea e al. 7] in he conex of criical phenomena. In erms of he mass fncion m,r) = r e α ) he Einsein eqaions ake he following form hereafer primes and dos denoe parial derivaives wih respec o r and, respecively) m = r e α F +e β F ) + ll+) sin F, 7) ṁ = r e α F F, 8) β = m r eα ll+)e αsin F, 9) r = 4πGλ is a dimensionless parameer. For = no graviy) eqaions 7)-9) are rivially solved by m = and β =, while eqaion ) redces o he fla space wave map eqaion. III.
