Questions bridging several of these areas are those attracting my attention the most. In an explicit or sometimes implicit way my research is centred around the natural problem of distinguishing groups or algebras by means of invariants. The latter can be internal data (such as in group or ring theory) or external structures where for example the group or algebra under consideration acts on (such as in representation theory or geometric group theory). Current keywords: Representation theory: S n -representation theory, integral group ring, K-theory of group rings, (τ-)tilting theory, indecomposables of tame blocks Ring Theory : (graded) structure theory, polynomial identities, idempotents, twisted group rings, orders in totally definite quaternion algebras, image of multilinear polynomials on matrices Group Theory: concrete constructions of (amalgameted) free products in (algebraic) groups, uniform (i.e. independent of generating set) constructions of free semigroups in f.g. groups, actions on (Λ)-trees, property (FA) for lattices in rank 1 algebraic groups over number fields Asymptotic theory and combinatorics: codimensions growth of PI algebras (over fields of any characteristic), (word) growth of groups, combinatorics of string algebras
