1 DE LA CRUZ BURELO, Eduard Doctor in Science, Physics, Postdoctoral Fellow University of Michigan Personal Information Nationality: Mexican Address: Apt. 146, Age: Ch. de la planche Marital status: bruleé, Ferney- Married (+2) Voltaire, France Telephone: Office: (+41) Home: (+33) Education: ( ), CINVESTAV-IPN, México, Physics Department, México D.F., México. Degrees: Doctor in Science (March 2005), Thesis: The Λ 0 b lifetime in the decay channel Λ0 b J/ψΛ0. Supervisor: Prof. Heriberto Castilla Valdez. Master in Science (December 2002). Thesis: The inclusive B-hadron lifetime using events with a J/ψ in the final state. Supervisor: Prof. Heriberto Castilla Valdez. ( ) Undergraduate Student, Universidad Juárez Autónoma de Tabasco, Cunduacán Tabasco México. Degrees: Licenciado en Física, February Thesis: Classical limit of the Quantum Electrodynamics. Supervisor: MC. Jorge A. Bernal Arroyo. Research Experience: (2001-March 2005) DØ Experiment at Fermilab. As a Ph.D. student at CINVESTAV México, I joined to the DØ collaboration at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) in Batavia IL., USA. My first task at DØ was to implement a method to test the consistency of the Central Fiber Tracker (CFT) geometry, a detector based on scintillating fibers (80,000 of them), which is used for the reconstruction of charged-particle trajectories at DØ. I also developed in C++ an alignment method for the CFT proposed by Dr. Gaston Gutierrez from Fermilab. Simultaneously to the alignment work, I implemented in C++ kinematic fitting methods, such as vertex constraint and mass constraint, that were used by the CINVESTAV group in the study of B hadrons. As part of the B Physics group at DØ, I worked on the J/ψ µ + µ reconstruction and selection of B hadrons decays to J/ψ µ + µ + X. The J/ψ to dimuon decay is a good background discriminator for B hadron studies. My first data selection of the J/ψ resonance was used to understand and improve the tracking code at DØ, studies on muon reconstruction, detector alignment, and triggers. With this sample, I performed the first lifetime measurement in the B Physics group at DØ, the average of B hadron lifetimes in the decay B J/ψ + X. I also collaborated in adapting the lifetime technique which I used in the inclusive lifetime 1

2 measurement, to the exclusive decays case. This work became in the first lifetime measurement at DØ in an exclusive channel, the B + lifetime in the decay mode B + J/ψK +. After working on the reconstruction of the main B hadrons: B +,B 0,B s, and Λ b, which has been the base of all analyzes in the DØ experiment using a J/ψ µ + µ in the final state, I focused on my Ph.D thesis project, the measurement of the lifetime of the lightest baryon which contains a b-quark, the Λ b. I reconstructed 62 ± 12 Λ b J/ψ(µ + µ )Λ(pπ) candidates and performed the first measurement of the Λ b lifetime in an full reconstructed decay, and the ratio of lifetimes τ(λ b )/τ(b 0 ) by reconstructing simultaneously the B 0 hadron. The theoretical prediction of this ratio is not totally consistent with the experiment, and this difference is a test to the validity of the Heavy quark expansion on a system of three quarks, a theory that works with high precision in B mesons. (April 2005-to date) ATLAS Experiment at CERN. After obtain my Doctor degree, I joined to the group of the University of Michigan working on the ATLAS experiment (UM-ATLAS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). An open problem in High Energy Physics is the observed high polarization in the hyperon system (Λ,Σ, etc.), specially in the Λ(uds) baryon, when they are inclusively produced. In ATLAS, the Λ b working group of which I am member, is preparing the tools to measure a possible polarization in the Λ b baryon. The Λ b (udb) is quite similar to the Λ(uds), the ud is a diquark system with total angular momentum equal to zero, but the in the Λ b, the b quark takes the place of the s quark in the Λ. Since the total angular momentum of the ud diquark is zero, it is believed that the high polarization of the Λ is due only to the s quark. If any polarization is observed in the Λ b, this will be a clear indication that the polarization effects does not depend on the mass of the heaviest quark in the baryon, as some models suggest. The search for the Higgs in one of the most important subjects of the experiments at the LHC at CERN. With the experience obtained in the study of the polarization of the Λ b, the natural step is to apply the same techniques to measure the spin of another particles, in this case, the spin of the Higgs. If any particle is discovered in the search for the Higgs, the spin will tell us if it is the Higgs that we are looking for or if it is another particle. We are working currently in the development of the techniques to measure the spin of the Higgs, and the possibility of use the spin information in the search itself. At the ATLAS collaboration, I am also member of the Statistical Forum, representing the B Physics group. The Statistical Forum is a working group which main goal is to set the statistical rules which would have to be follow by all members of the ATLAS collaboration in the preparation and review of any analysis of data. (April 2005-to date) DØ Experiment at Fermilab. When I joined to the UM-ATLAS group, I also started to collaborate with the UM-DØ group, in the DØ experiment. I established my own research program based on B Physics, subject which the UM-DØ group did not cover when I joined. As result of this program, a graduate student under mi supervision updated the Λ b lifetime measurement and measured the Λ b polarization and its asymmetry parity violating decay parameter as part of her Ph.D. thesis. Also, I started a program to reprocess around 300 million of events collected during by the DØ 2

3 detector, in order to increase the reconstruction efficiency in very long-lived particles such as KS 0, Ξ, and Λ, to look for the predicted particle Ξ b, make of a b, a d, and a s quark, one quark of each family of known matter. This program succeed in the first observation of this particle, the Ξ b discovery.
