MIYAOKA-YAU-TYPE INEQUALITIES FOR KÄHLER-EINSTEIN MANIFOLDS KWOKWAI CHAN AND NAICHUNG CONAN LEUNG Abstract. We investigate Chern number inequalities on Kähler-Einstein manifolds and their relations to uniformization. For Kähler-Einstein manifolds with c > 0, we prove certain Chern number inequalities in the toric case. For Kähler- Einstein manifolds with c < 0, we propose a series of Chern number inequalities, interpolating Yau s and Miyaoa s inequalities. Contents. Introduction. Introduction Yau s celebrated solution to Calabi s conjecture [7] says that a compact Kähler n-fold X with c (X) < 0 or c (X) = 0 always admit Kähler-Einstein metrics. As an application, he proved in [6] that for the case c (X) < 0, we have the following Chern number inequality : (.) c (X) c (X) n (n + ) c (X) c n (X) n, with equality holds if and only if X is uniformized by the unit ball in C n. It turns out that (see e.g. []) Yau s inequality (.) is a consequence of the (Higgs- )stability of the bundle TX O X on X. On the other hand, as a generalization of the Miyaoa-Yau inequality for surfaces [6], [6], Miyaoa proved in [7] the following inequality: (.) c (X)Hn 3c (X)H n, for any nef class H on a compact Kähler n-fold X with c (X) < 0. The relation between this inequality and stability also deserves investigation. In 990, Yau [8] conjectured that the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics should be equivalent to some notion of stability. This vast program of Yau would reveal deep relations between the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics, stability, Throughout this paper, by c (X) we mean c (X) (resp. c (X)) if c (X) < 0 (resp. c (X) > 0).
KWOKWAI CHAN AND NAICHUNG CONAN LEUNG Chern number inequalities and uniformization. However, despite much wor done by Yau, Tian, Donaldson and others [4], [8], [3], [3], our understanding of these relations are still poor, especially for the c > 0 case. In view of Yau s program and the inequalities (.) and (.), we propose the following series of Miyaoa-Yau type Chern number inequalities for the c < 0 case: ( ) c (X) c (X) n c (X) c (X) H n.. c (X) H n 3c (X)H n. (n + ) c (X) c n (X) n, ( + ) c (X) c (X) H n, This, in particular, will provide a lin between the inequalities (.) and (.). We also infer that an equality will lead to uniformization. More precisely, we propose the following: Conjecture.. Let X be a compact Kähler n-fold with c (X) < 0. Then the above series of inequalities ( ) hold for any nef class H on X. Moreover, equality holds for the -th level inequality with H n effective if and only if X is a fibration whose general fiber is uniformized by the -dimensional unit ball and H comes from the base. In the next section, we will investigate the intimate relation between these inequalities and stability, and explain why such a conjecture is conceivable. For the c > 0 case, both the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics and stability become much more subtle, as mentioned above. Nevertheless, the situation becomes considerably better in the toric case. Recall that for a toric Fano manifold X, there is an associated reflexive polytope P. Recently Wang and Zhu [5] proved that a toric Fano manifold admits Kähler-Einstein metrics if and only if it is balanced, i.e. the center of mass of P is at the origin. In view of this, we consider Kähler-Einstein manifolds with c > 0 which are toric, and prove, in 3 and 4, the following Chern number inequalities: Theorem.. Let X be a Kähler-Einstein toric Fano n-fold. Then for any nef class H, we have: c (X)Hn 3c (X)H n, provided that either (i) n =, 3, 4, or (ii) each facet of P contains a lattice point in its interior. Theorem., together with the discussion at the end of, yield the following Corollary.. Let X be a product of Kähler-Einstein toric Fano manifolds of dimensions less than or equal to 3. Then the whole set of inequalities ( ) hold for any nef class H on X.
MIYAOKA-YAU-TYPE INEQUALITIES 3 We will also discuss how the proposed inequalities ( ) can give new combinatorial information on balanced reflexive polytopes. Let P be an n-dimensional balanced reflexive polytope such that the corresponding toric variety X is smooth. Denote by #(P) the number of lattice points in P. The normalized Ehrhart polynomial of P: Ẽ(P) := #(P) Vol(P) = b n n + b n n + b n n +... measures the growth of the number of lattice points. Now Yau s inequality gives the following asymptotic lower bound: Proposition.. For large, we have Ẽ(P) Ẽ(P n ), with equality holds if and only if P = P n, where P n denotes (n + ) times of the standard simplex, which is the polytope of P n. Other inequalities of ( ) can give asymptotic upper bounds on Ehrhart polynomials. These will be discussed in the final section. Acnowledgements: We than the referee for many helpful comments and pointing out an earlier mistae. Both authors were partially supported by RGC grants from the Hong Kong Government and the second author was also partially supported by CUHK Direct Grant Manifolds with c < 0 In this section, we first review how Yau s inequality (.) can be deduced from stability. Then we explain, along similar lines, how Conjecture. comes out. Let X be a compact Kähler n-fold with c (X) < 0. The direct sum E := TX O X of the holomorphic cotangent bundle and the trivial line bundle is of ran n +. Let θ Ω,0 (End(E)) be the Higgs field given by the identity map TX T X = O X TX. Then it can be shown that (E, θ) is Hermitian-Yang-Mills and hence Higgs-stable with respect to the polarization c (X) (see []). Bogomolov s inequality then gives Yau s inequality: c (X) c (X) n (n + ) c (X) c n (X) n and equality implies that X is uniformized by the unit ball. In view of this, we suggest that Miyaoa s inequality: c (X)Hn 3c (X)H n also follows from the (Higgs-)stability of some ran 3 bundle, which, analogous to the above situation, should be the direct sum of a ran bundle and a trivial bundle. A natural choice of this is described as follows. We begin with the ran n bundle TX over X. Let Gr(, T X ) be the Grassmannian bundle of -planes in TX, π : Gr(, T X ) X the projection map. Let S be the universal ran sub-bundle of π TX. It is natural to expect that Miyaoa s inequality is related to the stability of S O. More generally, for = 3,..., n, let Gr(, TX ) be the Grassmannian bundle of -planes and S the universal ran bundle. We observe the following relation between the Chern classes of S and X:
4 KWOKWAI CHAN AND NAICHUNG CONAN LEUNG Lemma.. c (X)c (X)H n = c (S )c (X)H n c n (S ), c (X)c (X)H n = c (S )c (X)H n c n (S ), where on the right hand sides, we have suppressed the pull-bac. Proof. Let Q := π TX /S be the universal quotient bundle. Then c nr (X) = c nr (Q )c (S ) c nrm (Q )c m (S ) +..., for r = 0,,..., n. Intersecting with α := c (X)H n, all except the first two Chern classes of X become zero. For r = 0, c n (Q )c (S )α = 0. For r =, c n (Q )c (S )α = c n (Q )c (S )c (S )α = 0. Recursively, we have c (Q )c n (S )α = 0, c (Q )c n (S )α = 0. Since c (Q ) = c (X) c (S ), the first equation gives c (X)cn (S )α = c (S )c n (S )α. Then by c (Q ) = c (X) c (S ) c (S )c (X) + c (S ), c (X)c n (S )α = c (S )c n (S )α. Finally, if S is the universal bundle over the ordinary Grassmannian Gr(, n), then the intersection number c n ( S ) =. This completes the proof of the lemma. Since c n ( S ) =, X := c n (S ) loos lie a section of Gr(, TX ) over X. Suppose that this is really the case and X is a genuine manifold. Restrict the bundle S to X, which we still denote by S. Also denote by π : X X the restriction of the projection map. Consider the direct sum E = S O X. Let θ Ω,0 (End(E )) be the Higgs-field given by the inclusion S T X = O X. Suppose that T X (E, θ ) is Hermitian-Yang-Mills and hence Higgs-stable with respect to the polarization π c (X). Let H be an ample class on X. We can assume that H is very ample by replacing it with a sufficiently high multiple if necessary. Then choosing n sections of π H will generically cut out a -dimensional submanifold of X. When restricted to this -dimensional submanifold, (E, θ ) remains Higgs-stable. Therefore we have c (S ) c (X) H n ( + ) c (S ) c (X) H n on X = c n (S ). By the above lemma, the following inequality holds c (X) c (X) H n ( + ) c (X) c (X) H n. Moreover, equality means that any submanifold cut out by a generic choice of n sections of π H is uniformized by the -dimensional unit ball. Hence X and X should be fibred by these ball-quotients. Remar.. Of course the above is not a proof! Our aim is to show that Conjecture. is conceivable and intimately related to stability. As a test of ( ), let s loo at X = M N, a product of manifolds with c < 0 of dimensions m and n respectively. Let H and H be ample classes on M and N respectively. Then by a direct computation, we have that, for =,..., m + n,
MIYAOKA-YAU-TYPE INEQUALITIES 5 the intersection number ( ( + ) c (X) c ) c (X) (X) (H + H ) m+n is greater than or equal to the following sum ( min(,m) A p p= ( B p min(,n) + p= ) (p + ) c (M) c p (M) c (M) p H mp c (N) p H n(p) ) (p + ) c (N) c p (N) c (N) p H np c (M) p H m(p) where A p, B p are nonnegative numbers. It follows that if both M and N satisfy the series of inequalities ( ), then the same is true for X (for classes of the form H + H ). Moreover, if, say, M is a ball-quotient, then an equality would result for classes H on N, which agrees with our conjecture. 3. Kähler-Einstein toric Fano manifolds Next we turn to Kähler-Einstein manifolds with c > 0 which are toric. In this section, we give a proof of: Theorem 3. (=nd half of Theorem.). Let X be a Kähler-Einstein toric Fano n- fold, or more generally, toric Fano manifold with reductive automorphism group. Then for any nef class H, we have the inequality: c (X)Hn 3c (X)H n, provided that each facet of P contains a lattice point in its interior. We fix our notations first. For details of toric Fano varieties and polytopes, please refer to [], [4] and [0]. Let N = Z n be a lattice and M = Hom Z (N, Z) = Z n the dual lattice with, : M N Z the natural pairing. Denote by N R = N Z R = R n and M R = M Z R = R n (resp. N Q and M Q ) the real (resp. rational) scalar extensions. For a subset S in a real vector space, we denote by conv(s) (resp. aff(s)) the convex (resp. affine) hull of S. Let P M R be a reflexive polytope and X = X P the corresponding toric Fano variety. We assume that X is smooth. Denote by F(P) = {F, F,..., F d } the facets of P, and by D, D,..., D d the corresponding torus invariant prime divisors on X. Then the first and second Chern classes are given by: c (X) = d i= We then compute the codimension cycle ( 3c (X) c d (X) = 3 D i D j i<j i= D i, c (X) = D i D j. i<j D i ) = i<j D i D j d i= By general theory of toric varieties, each u M Q determines a Q-divisor by: div(χ u ) = d i= u, v i D i. D i.
6 KWOKWAI CHAN AND NAICHUNG CONAN LEUNG We can move each D i by choosing an element u Fi aff(f i ) M Q, so that u Fi, v i =, and we have ( Di d ) Q D i D i + u Fi, v j D j = u Fi, v j D i D j, j= where Q denotes Q-rationally equivalence. Summing up all gives d Hence we have i= D i Q d i= j =i We formulate the following j =i u Fi, v j D i D j = ( u Fi, v j + u Fj, v i )D i D j. 3c (X) c (X) Q ( u Fi, v j u Fj, v i )D i D j. i<j Conjecture 3.. If the center of mass of P, denoted by center(p), is at the origin, then there exists u Fi aff(f i ) M Q for i =,,..., d such that for any adjacent facets F i and F j. i<j u Fi, v j, Since this would imply that the cycle class [3c (X) c (X)] is effective, the inequality (.) for Kähler-Einstein toric Fano manifolds: (3c (X) c (X))Hn 0, for any nef class H, would follow. The question is now in purely combinatorial terms. To prove Theorem 3., we recall that a root of a reflexive polytope P is a lattice point contained in the relative interior of some facet. We denote the set of all roots of P by R(P). P is said to be semisimple if R(P) = R(P). By results of Demazure (see [0]), the automorphism group of X = X P, i.e. Aut(X), is reductive if and only if P is semisimple. While by Matsushima s obstruction to the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics, if X has Kähler-Einstein metrics, then Aut(X) is reductive. Hence, if center(p) = 0, then P is semisimple. Recently, Nill gave a purely convex-geometrical proof of this in [9]. We will need the following powerful results on the geometry of semisimple reflexive polytopes proved by Nill (see [9]): Lemma 3. (Lemma.4. of [9]). Let P M R be a reflexive polytope. For any F F(P) and m F M, there is a Z-basis {e, e,..., e n} of M such that m = e n and F {u M R : u n = u, e n = }. Lemma 3. (Lemma 5.9. of [9]). Let P M R be a n-dimensional reflexive polytope. Let m R(P) be contained in F m which is associated to the vertex v m V(P ). Then. P F m R 0 m, P M (F M) Nm, {v P N : m, v < 0} = {v m }.. P = conv(f m, F m ) if and only if there is only one facet F m which is associated to v m V(P ) with m, v m > 0.
MIYAOKA-YAU-TYPE INEQUALITIES 7 3. m R(P) if and only if the previous condition is satisfied and m, v m =. In this case F m = F m. Furthermore F m and F m are naturally isomorphic as lattice polytopes and {v P N : m, v = 0} = {v m, v m }. Now Theorem 3. is an immediate consequence of the following lemma: Lemma 3.3. Suppose that a facet, say F F(P), contains a root m R(P) such that m R(P). Then there exists u F aff(f ) M Q such that for any facet F j adjacent to F. u F, v j, Proof. Since m R(P), by Lemma 3., there is a unique facet, say F F(P) such that m, v = and {v P N : m, v = 0} = {v, v }. Suppose that F is not adjacent to F. Then we can simply tae u F = m and we have u F, v j = 0 < for any F j adjacent to F. If F is adjacent to F, then we choose a Z-basis {e, e,..., e n} of M such that m = en and F {u M R : u n = u, e n = } by Lemma 3.. In particular, we have v = e n. Suppose F, F 3,..., F l are all the facets adjacent to F. By Lemma 3., P = conv(f, F ). We observe that v = z + e n and v j = z j for j = 3,..., l, where z, z 3,..., z l are elements in the span of {e,..., e n }. Regard F as a polytope in the affine hyperplane H = {u M R : u n = u, e n = } with respect to the lattice aff(f ) M and with origin m. Using the coordinates with respect to the basis {e,..., e n }, F is given by Also we have F = {y H : y, z, y, z j for j = 3,..., l}. F F {y H : y, z = } and F F j {y H : y, z j = }, for j = 3,..., l. Consider the polytope Q F defined by Q = {y F : y, z, y, z j for j = 3,..., l}. In fact, Q = (/)F. Q is not empty since the origin (i.e. m) is contained in it. Moreover, there is a positive constant ɛ > 0 such that the ball B ɛ = {y H : y ɛ} is contained in Q. We claim that there exists y Q such that y, z. Suppose not, then any vertex of Q, say w, will satisfy w, z >.
8 KWOKWAI CHAN AND NAICHUNG CONAN LEUNG Since Q = (/)F and F is integral, this implies that w, z 0. But Q is the convex hull of its vertices, so we have y, z 0, for all y Q. This is a contradiction since B ɛ contains points with y, z < 0. This proves our claim. It follows that there exists y Q, with rational coordinates such that y, z and y, z j for j = 3,..., l. If we set u F = y + e n, then this is equivalent to u F, v j, for j =, 3,..., l. Remar 3.. The difficulty in removing the last condition in Theorem 3. can be described as follows. For a facet not containing a root, there are examples, such as the P - bundle P(O P P O P P (, )), such that the possible values of u F i aff(f i ) M Q, though form a sub-polytope of F i, is of dimension less than that of F i, in other words, the sub-polytope has empty relative interior. It is then more difficult to locate the required u Fi. Indeed, we don t see why such a sub-polytope is always non-empty. In this section, we will prove: 4. Further evidence Theorem 4. (=st half of Theorem.). Let X be a Kähler-Einstein toric Fano surface, 3-fold or 4-fold. Then we have for any nef class H. c (X)Hn 3c (X)H n, Since Kähler-Einstein toric n-folds for n 4 are completely classified, we can and will prove Theorem 4. by directly checing the inequality for all cases along the lines of Conjecture 3.. For any complex surface, it is well nown that the Miyaoa-Yau inequality c 3c is true, so we are done. In fact there are exactly three Kähler-Einstein toric Fano surfaces, namely, P, P P, S 3 where S 3 is blow-up of P at three points, which is a del Pezzo surface of degree 6. It is easy to chec the inequality for them directly. For 3-folds and 4-folds, we need a lemma: Lemma 4.. Let X = Y Z be a product of varieties. Suppose [3c (Y) c (Y)] and [3c (Z) c (Z)] are effective (resp. positive) cycle classes on Y and Z respectively. Then [3c (X) c (X)] is also effective (resp. positive).
MIYAOKA-YAU-TYPE INEQUALITIES 9 Proof. Note that effectivity and positivity of a cycle class is preserved under pullbac via a projection. Now the lemma follows from 3c (X) c (X) = (3c (Z) c (Z)) + c (Y)c (Z) if dim(y) = and dim(z), and from 3c (X) c (X) = (3c (Y) c (Y)) + (3c (Z) c (Z)) + c (Y)c (Z) if both dim(y), dim(z). Here we have suppressed the pull-bacs. Kähler-Einstein toric Fano 3-folds are classified by Mabuchi (see [5]). There are five examples. The first four are P 3 and products of lower dimensional smooth toric Fano varieties: P P, P P P, P S 3. By the above lemma, Conjecture 3. is true for these four examples. The remaining one is the P -bundle P(O P P O P P(, )). The verification for this will be carried out in the appendix. Kähler-Einstein toric Fano 4-folds are classified by Naagawa and Batyrev- Selivanova (see [8], []). There are twelve of them. The first nine are P 4 and the following eight products of lower dimensional varieties: P P 3, P P P, P P, P P P P, P S 3, P P S 3, S 3 S 3, P P(O P P O P P(, )). Applying Lemma 4. again, Conjecture 3. holds for these examples. The remaining three are, in the notations of [], V, W and X,. We again chec the inequality for them in the appendix. This completes the proof of Theorem 4.. Remar 4.. There is a notion of symmetric toric Fano manifolds introduced by Batyrev- Selivanova in []. Namely, the toric Fano manifold X associated to a polytope P, is called symmetric if the group Aut M (P) of lattice automorphisms leaving P invariant has only the origin as a fix point. As noticed by Batyrev-Selivanova, all nown examples of Kähler-Einstein toric Fano manifolds (including all examples of dimension, 3 and 4) are symmetric. It is not nown whether the inequality (.) is true for symmetric toric Fano manifolds. 5. Applications to counting lattice points In this section, we apply our results to give new asymptotic bounds on counting lattice points of balanced reflexive polytopes. Let X = X P be a toric Fano variety associated to a reflexive polytope P R n. Let H be an ample divisor on X and P H R n be the corresponding polytope. Suppose that X is smooth, then H is very ample for every. The higher cohomology groups of the line bundle O(H) vanish and the sections precisely correspond to the lattice points in P H. Hence, by the Riemann-Roch formula, the number of lattice points of P H is given by the Ehrhart polynomial (see [4],
0 KWOKWAI CHAN AND NAICHUNG CONAN LEUNG section 5.3): E(P H ) = #(P H ) = n a ν ν ν=0 = a n n + a n n + a n n + O( n3 ), where a ν = ν! (Hν Td ν (X)) and Td ν (X) denotes the ν-th Todd class of X. The first few Todd classes are given by Td n (X) =, Td n (X) = c (X), Td n (X) = (c (X) + c (X)). Hence we have a n = Hn n! = Vol(P H ), a n = H n c (X) (n )! = Vol( P H). Since A (X) Q is spanned by the classes [V(τ)], τ P, the ν-th Todd class can be written as Td ν (X) = r τ [V(τ)], τ P (ν) for some rational numbers r τ. A famous question raised by Danilov is that given a lattice M (or N), whether we can choose the r τ s uniformly, independent of the toric variety X. Of course, by the above, we have uniformly, r τ = /, for all τ P (). There has been much wor on this question (see []). Applying the inequality (.), we can get a uniform bound on r τ for τ P (). Namely, if the inequality (.) is true for X, then we have Td n (X)H n = (c (X) + c (X))H n 3 c (X)H n, from which follows that r τ 3, for any τ P (). Also, for the coefficient a n in the above formula for the number of lattice points, we have a n = (n )! (Hn Td n (X)) 3 H n c (X). (n )! The quantity H n c (X)/(n )! is the sum of volumes of codimension faces of P H. If we denote by P H () the union of codimension faces of P H, then we get the following asymptotic upper bound for the growth of number of lattice points of P H : E(P H ) Vol(P H ) n + Vol( P H) n + 3 Vol(P H()) n + O( n3 ), provided that the inequality (.) holds for X. Hence by the results of previous sections, we have Proposition 5.. If P is balanced, then the following asymptotic upper bound holds: E(P H ) Vol(P H ) n + Vol( P H) n + 3 Vol(P H()) n + O( n3 ), provided that either (i) n =, 3, 4, or
MIYAOKA-YAU-TYPE INEQUALITIES (ii) each facet of P contains a root. On the other hand, taing H to be the anticanonical divisor K = c (X), then the normalized Ehrhart polynomial of P is given by Ẽ(P) := #(P) Vol(P) = b n n + b n n + b n n +... where in general we have b n =, b n = /n, and b n = By Yau s inequality (.), we have a n Vol(P) = (n )!Vol(P) (c (X) + c (X))c n (X). Proposition 5. (=Proposition.). If P is balanced, then for large, we have Ẽ(P) Ẽ(P n ) with equality holds if and only if P = P n where P n is the polytope of P n. Appendix A. The last four examples In this appendix, we verify Conjecture 3. for the remaining low dimension examples. In the following, {e, e,..., e n } will always denote the standard basis of the lattice N = Z n and P the corresponding polytope. Recall that we have to prove that there exists u Fi aff(f i ) M Q for i =,,..., d such that for any adjacent facets F i and F j. u Fi, v j, For P(O P P O P P (, )), The 6 vertices of P are given by which correspond to the 6 facets of P: V(P ) = {e, e, e 3, e 3, e e 3, e + e 3 } F = conv(u, u, u 3, u 4 ), F = conv(u, u, u 5, u 6 ), F 3 = conv(u, u 3, u 5, u 7 ), F 4 = conv(u, u 4, u 6, u 8 ), F 5 = conv(u 5, u 6, u 7, u 8 ), F 6 = conv(u 3, u 4, u 7, u 8 ), where u, u,..., u 8 are vertices of P given, with respect to the dual basis {e, e, e 3 } of M, by the column vectors of the following matrix respectively. We can choose u F, u F, u F3, u F4, u F5, u F6 to be the column vectors of respectively.
KWOKWAI CHAN AND NAICHUNG CONAN LEUNG V is the so-called del Pezzo variety of dimension 4, which is centrally symmetric. The 0 vertices of P are given by V(P ) = {e, e, e 3, e 4, (e + e + e 3 + e 4 ), e, e, e 3, e 4, e + e + e 3 + e 4 } which correspond to the 0 facets of P: F = conv(u, u, u 3, u 4, u 5, u 6, u 7, u 8, u 9, u 0, u, u ), F = conv(u, u, u 3, u 3, u 4, u 5, u 6, u 7, u 8, u 9, u 0, u ), F 3 = conv(u 4, u 5, u 6, u 3, u 4, u 5, u, u 3, u 4, u 5, u 6, u 7 ), F 4 = conv(u 7, u 8, u 9, u 6, u 7, u 8, u, u 3, u 4, u 8, u 9, u 30 ), F 5 = conv(u 0, u, u, u 9, u 0, u, u 5, u 6, u 7, u 8, u 9, u 30 ), F 6 = conv(u 3, u 4, u 6, u 7, u 9, u 0, u, u 3, u 5, u 6, u 8, u 9 ), F 7 = conv(u 4, u 5, u 7, u 8, u 0, u, u, u 4, u 5, u 7, u 8, u 30 ), F 8 = conv(u, u, u 7, u 9, u 0, u, u 6, u 8, u 9, u, u 9, u 30 ), F 9 = conv(u, u 3, u 4, u 6, u, u, u 3, u 5, u 0, u, u 6, u 7 ), F 0 = conv(u, u 3, u 5, u 6, u 8, u 9, u 4, u 5, u 7, u 8, u 3, u 4 ), where u, u,..., u 30 are the 30 vertices of P. The first one-third are given, with respect to the dual basis {e, e, e 3, e 4 } of M, by the column vectors of the following matrix respectively, the second one-third are given by the columns of respectively, and the last one-third are given by the columns of respectively. We can choose u Fi aff(f i ) M Q, i =,,..., 0, to be given by the column vectors of the matrix respectively.
