2 Herbicide: Irrigation: Treatments: 0.75 oz/a and Dual 2.5 pt/a were applied preemergence with a 2-person hand-held spray boom (13- No. 2 cone nozzles, 50 mesh screens, 15 gpa final spray volume) on Jul 31. Plots were not irrigated---rainfed only Treatments 2 7 applied with a hand-held spray boom (2 nozzle boom (Conejet TSS cone nozzles, 50 mesh screens, 22 gpa final spray volume) on Sep 30 Sampling: R5 on Sep 30, Oct 1 and Oct 3, and R6 on Oct 9 and Oct 13 Insect sweeps (12 sweeps/plot) on Oct 1, Oct 3, Oct 9 and Oct 13 Discussion One day after treatment (DAT), none of the treatments significantly reduced (compared to the untreated) Lepidoptera populations composed mainly of green cloverworm (GCW) (Table 1). Also, populations of stink bugs were too low for meaningful comparisons (Table 2). However, threecornered alfalfa hoppers (TCAH) were significantly less than the untreated in Besiege SC and Karate Z plots (Table 3). Banded cucumber beetle (BCB) and spider populations were too low for meaningful comparisons. Three DAT, total Lepidoptera populations in the untreated were low, but all treatments significantly reduced these populations (Table 4). Stink bug populations were too low for meaningful comparisons (Table 5). TCAH populations were significantly less in Besiege SC and Karate Z plots (Table 6). Again, spider populations were too low for meaningful comparisons (Table 6). Nine DAT, Lepidoptera and stink bug populations were too low for meaningful evaluation (Tables 7 and 8). TCAH populations were increasing and only Besiege SC and Karate Z provided control (Table 9). Besiege SC and Karate Z also controlled BCB (Table 9). Thirteen DAT, Lepidoptera populations were again too low for meaningful evaluation (Table 10). Redbanded stink bug (RBSB) populations were increasing and only Besiege SC and Karate Z provided good control (Table 11). TCAH and BCB populations also were controlled by Besiege Sc and Karate Z (Table 12.). Plots were not harvested because of the late planting date--- July 30. Plots were not harvested due to the late planting date. In conclusion, the Besiege SC and Karate Z treatments gave the best control of a broad spectrum of pest insects. Unfortunately, Lepidoptera populations were not as high as desired. 67
