1 Character sheaves and modular generalized Springer correspondence Part 2: The generalized Springer correspondence Anthony Henderson (joint with Pramod Achar, Daniel Juteau, Simon Riche) University of Sydney January 2015 Simplifying the context To get a toy model of character sheaves on G: 1. Instead of G-equivariant perverse sheaves on G, consider G-equivariant perverse sheaves on the unipotent variety U G. This is simpler because there are only finitely many G-orbits, but still highly relevant e.g. for cuspidal character sheaves. 2. Assume p is large enough so that there is a G-equivariant isomorphism U G NG where N G is the nilpotent cone in the Lie algebra g; then we can use Fourier transform on g. 3. The behaviour for large p is no different from considering G over C with the usual topology rather than étale topology. This setting (first with simplification 1 only, later with 2 and 3) was studied by Lusztig in the case of Q l -sheaves: one of his main results here was the generalized Springer correspondence. Aim: to prove an analogue in the modular case where char(k) = l, as a first step towards understanding modular character sheaves.
2 The new set-up New notation: G is a connected reductive algebraic group over C, g is its Lie algebra, on which G has the adjoint action, N G = {x g x nilpotent} is the nilpotent cone, on which G has finitely many orbits, k is a sufficiently large field of characteristic l 0, D G (N G,k) is the constructible equivariant derived category. For any A D G (N G,k) and G-orbit O in N G, the restrictions H i A O are G-equivariant local systems (i.e. G-equivariant sheaves of finite-dimensional k-vector spaces) on O, so they correspond to finite-dimensional representations over k of the finite group A G (x) = G x /G x, where G x is the stabilizer in G of x O. Let N G,k denote the set of pairs (O,E) where O is a G-orbit in N G and E is an irreducible G-equivariant local system on O. Example (G = GL n ) When G = GL n, g = Mat n and N G = {x Mat n x n = 0}. By the Jordan form theorem, we have a bijection G\N G P n = {partitions λ of n}, where x O λ means that x has Jordan blocks of sizes λ 1,λ 2,. In this case A G (x) = 1 for all x, so N G,k P n for all fields k. Example (G of type G 2 ) The five nilpotent orbits, in order of decreasing dimension, are: G 2 (regular), G 2 (a 1 ) (subregular), Ã1, A 1, 0. These Bala Carter labels record the type of the smallest Levi subalgebra meeting the orbit (where Ã1 means the short-root A 1 ). We have A G (x) = 1 for all x except A G (x) = S 3 for x G 2 (a 1 ), so N G,k = 7 usually, N G,k = 6 if char(k) {2,3}.
3 There is an anti-autoequivalence D of D G (N G,k), Verdier duality. We study the abelian subcategory Perv G (N G,k) of G-equivariant perverse k-sheaves on N G, where A D G (N G,k) is perverse if H i A O = H i (DA) O = 0 whenever i > dimo. The simple objects in Perv G (N G,k) are in bijection with N G,k : IC(O,E) = intermediate extension of E[dimO] to O, extended by zero to the whole of N G. Example (G = GL 2, cf. Juteau Mautner Williamson) The two orbits are O (1,1) = {0} and O (2) = N G \{0}. We have IC(O (1,1),k) = k 0 (skyscraper sheaf), IC(O (2),k) = k NG [2] if l 2. The l = 2 case is different, because then H 1 (O (2),k) 0. Cuspidal pairs and induction series Let P be a parabolic subgroup of G and L a Levi factor of P. We have a geometric parabolic induction functor I G L P = IndG P ResL P : D L(N L,k) D G (N G,k), defined in the same way as for character sheaves: Res L P : D L(N L,k) Ind G P : D P(N P,k) D P (N L,k) ( ) D P (N P,k), D G (G P N P,k) ( )! D G (N G,k). Lemma (Lusztig when l = 0, [AHR] when l > 0) I G L P commutes with D and maps Perv L(N L,k) to Perv G (N G,k). It has left adjoint R G L P = IndL P ResG P and right adjoint RG L P where P denotes the opposite parabolic with the same Levi L.
4 We say that a pair (O,E) N G,k, or the corresponding IC(O,E), is cuspidal if the following equivalent conditions hold: 1. R G L P (IC(O,E)) = 0 for all L P G; 2. IC(O,E) is not a quotient of I G L P (A) for any L P G and any A Perv L (N L,k); 3. IC(O,E) is not a subobject of I G L P (A) for any L P G and any A Perv L (N L,k). Remark When l = 0, the Decomposition Theorem of [BBD] implies that if A Perv L (N L,k) is simple, then I G L P (A) is semisimple, so one can replace quotient / subobject with summand. Semisimplicity can fail if l > 0, and cuspidals can occur as constituents of I G L P (A). This is analogous to modular representations of G(F q ) when l p. Lemma (Lusztig same proof works for l > 0) If (O,E) is cuspidal, O is distinguished, i.e. meets no proper Levi. Let M G,k be the set of cuspidal data (L,O L,E L ) where L is a Levi subgroup of G (take only one representative of each G-conjugacy class, allowing L = G) and (O L,E L ) is a cuspidal pair for L. Proposition (Lusztig when l = 0, [AHJR] when l > 0) For any (L,O L,E L ) M G,k, I G L P (IC(O L,E L )) is independent of the parabolic P, and its head and socle are isomorphic. The induction series associated to (L,O L,E L ) M G,k is the set of simple quotients (equivalently, subobjects) of I G L P (IC(O L,E L )). Lemma (Lusztig same proof works for l > 0) Any simple object IC(O,E) in Perv G (N G,k) belongs to the induction series associated to some (L,O L,E L ) M G,k as above. (If IC(O,E) is cuspidal, then (L,O L,E L ) = (G,O,E).)
5 The (modular) generalized Springer correspondence is: Theorem (Lusztig when l = 0, [AHJR] when l > 0) 1. Induction series associated to different cuspidal data are disjoint: in other words, a given IC(O,E) belongs to the induction series associated to a unique (L,O L,E L ) M G,k. 2. The induction series associated to (L,O L,E L ) is canonically in bijection with the set of irreducible k-reps of N G (L)/L. 3. Hence we have a bijection N G,k (L,O L,E L ) M G,k Irr(N G (L)/L,k). The proof will be discussed in the next lecture. Remark The analogue of 1 holds for modular representations of G(F q ) also; for the analogue of 2 one needs a q-deformed group algebra. Background: the Springer correspondence In the mid-1970s, Springer gave a geometric construction of the irreducible Q l -reps of the Weyl group W = N G (T)/T. As reformulated by Lusztig and Borho Macpherson, this comes from an action of W on the semisimple perverse sheaf Spr = I G T B (Q l 0 ) = µ! Q l [dimn G ] Perv G (N G,Q l ), where µ : G B N B N G is the Springer resolution of N G. The Springer correspondence is the resulting bijection {simple summands of Spr} Irr(W,Q l ) IC(O,E) Hom PervG (N G,Q l ) (Spr,IC(O,E)). Lusztig then found that this was the (L,O L,E L ) = (T,0,Q l ) case of the generalized Springer correspondence, thus accounting for the IC(O,E) s that are not summands of Spr. Juteau (2007) showed that the Springer correspondence holds with k instead of Q l and quotients instead of summands.
6 Example (G = GL n, W = S n ) When l = 0, Irr(S n,k) = P n, so every IC(O λ,k) is a summand of Spr, i.e. the Springer correspondence for GL n is already generalized. In particular, GL n does not have a cuspidal pair unless n = 1. When l > 0, James constructed the irreps D λ of S n over k, labelled by λ that are l-regular (no part occurs l times). Under Juteau s correspondence, D λ maps to IC(O λ t,k) where λ t is the transpose partition; so these are the simple quotients of Spr. (All simples occur as constituents of Spr.) The only distinguished orbit in N G is O (n) ; we will see that (O (n),k) is cuspidal n is a power of l. So M G,k is essentially the set of Levis of the form i 0 GLm i l i, where m i are nonnegative integers such that i 0 m il i = n. Example (G = GL n, l > 0 continued) For L = i 0 GLm i l i such a Levi subgroup of GL n, we have N G (L)/L = i 0S mi, Irr(N G (L)/L,k) i 0{l-regular λ (i) m i }. Under our correspondence, the collection (λ (i) ) maps to IC(O λ,k) where λ = i 0 li (λ (i) ) t. Note that IC(O (n),k) occurs in the series of L = i 0 GLb i l i where i 0 b il i = n and all b i < l. Remark The above combinatorial correspondence is a simplified version of what appears in the analogous theory of induction series for modular representations of GL n (F q ) (Dipper Du).
7 Example (G = G 2, W dihedral of order 12) When l = 0, Irr(W,k) = 6 < 7 = N G,k. The non-springer pair is (G 2 (a 1 ),E sign ), which must be cuspidal because the other proper Levi subgroups are both isomorphic to GL 2. When l = 2, Irr(W,k) = 2, and only IC(0,k) and IC(Ã1,k) belong to Juteau s correspondence. The other series are: (L of type A 1,O (2),k), N G (L)/L = 2 : IC(A 1,k), (L of type Ã1,O (2),k), N G (L)/L = 2 : IC(G 2 (a 1 ),E refln ), leaving 2 cuspidal pairs, (G 2 (a 1 ),k) and (G 2,k). The above GL n and G 2 examples illustrate: Theorem ([AHJR]) When l > 0, IC(O reg,k) belongs to the induction series associated to (L,O L,reg,k) where L is minimal such that l W/W L.
