5 # Course Learning Outcomes Programme Learning Objectives (PLOs) To be able to understand the basics of engineering thermodynamics, types of systems and processes, difference between various forms of energy, energy exchange processes and thermodynamic laws. 2 Apply the first law of thermodynamics to closed systems and compute the thermodynamic properties of fluids. Understand implications of the second law of thermodynamics and limitations placed by the second law on the performance of thermodynamic systems. 4 Construct thermodynamic processes on appropriate diagrams and apply the second law of thermodynamics in view of entropy balance. Apply the second law of thermodynamics to refrigeration and heat engine cycles with a view to improve their performance. 5 To be able to apply ideal cycle analysis to simple heat engine cycles to estimate thermal efficiency and work as a function of pressures and temperatures at various points in the cycle.

The students shall be able to identify various states of working fluid and reversible and irreversible processes First law of thermodynamics To understand the law of conservation of energy and formulation of non-flow energy equation and steady flow energy equation. The students shall be able to apply the energy equations to control mass and control volume systems Phases of a pure substance and Property diagrams for phase-change processes Differentiate between the liquid, vapor and gas. The students shall be able to draw the phase diagram of pure water and identify the various state point w.r.t. change in temperature and pressure Use of vapor tables Understand the steam tables and their application in phase change processes. The students shall be able to use the steam tables to calculate various state points in saturated and superheated regions The ideal gas equation of state Differentiate between the real gases and ideal gases. The student shall be able to understand the behavior of real and ideal gases, the relationship between specifics heat capacities and the applications of ideal gas equation Reversible non-flow processes (Quiz 1) Differentiate between the constant volume, constant pressure and isothermal processes and to formulate the equations to calculate energy and work during these processes Reversible non-flow Reversible flow processes and Understand and to formulate the equations to calculate energy and work in reversible adiabatic and polytrophic control mass systems. The students shall be able to understand the mechanisms of energy transfer in control volume systems irreversible and non-steady flow processes Differentiate between free expansion, throttling and adiabatic mixing of fluids. The students shall be able to find the work and energy transfer during non-steady flow processes. 4

The students shall be differentiating between the working principle of Heat engines, refrigerators, and heat pumps and to find out the change in entropy for vapors and ideal gases Entropy and Reversible processes Calculate the change in entropy and heat for reversible processes. The students shall be able to sketch T-S diagrams for reversible isothermal, isentropic and polytropic processes Entropy and Reversible and irreversible processes Calculate the change in entropy and heat for irreversible processes. The students shall be able to sketch T-S diagrams for irreversible processes. 2, Exergy Understand the concept of exergy. The students shall be able to do the exergy analysis of steady flow and non-steady flow systems 2,, Heat Engine Cycles (Carnot Cycle) Basic consideration in the analysis of power cycle. The students shall be able to understand the ideal Carnot cycle and its application in real heat engines Air standard cycles (Otto cycle, Diesel Cycle) Differentiate between various air standards cycles. The students shall be able to understand the working principle of spark ignition engine and compression ignition engine Stirling and Ericsson Cycles for engines (Quiz 2) Understand the stirling and ericsson cycles.
