Nonlinar Stoks Mullr Polarimtry Masood Samim, Srgui Krouglov, Virginijus Barzda Dpartmnt of Physics and Institut for Optical Scincs, Univrsity of Toronto, 60 St. Gorg Strt, Toronto, Ontario M5S1A7, Canada (Datd: August 20, 2018) arxiv: v1 [physics.optics] 8 Oct 2015 Th Stoks Mullr polarimtry is gnralizd to includ nonlinar optical procsss such as scond- and third-harmonic gnration, sum- and diffrnc-frquncy gnrations. Th ovrall algbraic form of th polarimtry is prsrvd, whr th incoming and outgoing radiations ar rprsntd by column vctors and th intrvning mdium is rprsntd by a matrix. Exprssions for th gnralizd nonlinar Stoks vctor and th Mullr matrix ar providd in trms of cohrncy and corrlation matrics, xpandd by highr-dimnsional analogus of Pauli matrics. In all cass, th outgoing radiation is rprsntd by th convntional 4 1 Stoks vctor, whil dimnsions of th incoming radiation Stoks vctor and Mullr matrix dpnd on th ordr of th procss bing xamind. In addition, rlation btwn nonlinar suscptibilitis and th masurd Mullr matrics ar xplicitly providd. Finally, th approach of combining linar and nonlinar optical lmnts is discussd within th contxt of polarimtry. PACS numbrs: k, Ky, Ja Kywords: Ellipsomtry, Polarimtry, Nonliar Optics I. INTRODUCTION Polarimtry tchniqus mploy th masurmnt of polarization stat of optical rspons from th sampl for a dfind polarization of incoming radiation. Linar optical polarimtry is a wll stablishd masurmnt tchniqu that found applications in diffrnt rsarch filds including matrial scinc and biomdical imaging [1 7]. Polarimtry can also b mployd for nonlinar optical tchniqus, such as scond-harmonic gnration (SHG), third-harmonic gnration (THG), cohrnt anti-stoks Raman scattring (CARS) [8 15]. In an optical stup th polarization-dpndnt intraction of light with mattr can b dscribd using Stoks Mullr, Poincaré or Jons formalism [16 18]. Each formalism has uniqu advantags convnintly applicabl for diffrnt circumstanc. In th linar Stoks Mullr formalism, th light is rprsntd by a four-lmnt Stoks vctor, and its intraction with mattr is rprsntd by a 4 4 Mullr matrix. Th Stoks vctor can dscrib partially- or compltly-polarizd light, and oprats with intnsitis, which ar ral numbrs, and thus, obsrvabls in an xprimnt. On th othr hand, Jons formalism is usd to dscrib purly polarizd stats rtaining th phas rlations of th lctric filds and rquirs working with complx variabls. Rcntly, attmpts hav bn mad to dal with th nonlinar polarization masurmnts in a linar fashion. For xampl SHG signal from sampls hav bn charactrizdby a4 1Stoksvctoraswll asforth incoming fundamntal bam radiation [19, 20]. Howvr, th charactrization of th sampl rmain unrsolvd, mainly bcaus of th nonlinar rlationship btwn th incoming virgis.barzda@utoronto.ca; Dpartmnt of Chmical and Physical Scincs,Univrsity of Toronto Mississauga, 3359 Mississauga Road North, Mississauga, Ontario L5L1C6, Canada and outgoing radiations. In llipsomtry, for two-photon procsss som nonlinar rlationships hav bn drivd by using a quantum-mchanical framwork and a Jons Stoks approach [21, 22]. Ths rcnt fforts dmonstrat th nd for a unifying and gnral framwork for nonlinar optical Stok Mullr polarimtry. Hr, w dvlop th thortical framwork for nonlinar optical polarimtry by using th classical dscription of lctric filds, nonlinar suscptibilitis and optical radiations polarizations. Th polarization stat of light as wll as th rspons of a matrial is dscribd with ralvalud paramtrs. In our approach to th multi-photon polarimtry, th Jons and Stoks Mullr formalism is analogous to th convntional linar polarimtry. Th Jons formalism can b usd to dscrib nonlinar lightmattr intraction using highr-ordr suscptibilitis and pur polarization stats. Howvr, oftn mdia, including biological tissu, ar a highly htrognous scattring matrials; thrfor, thr is an additional bnfit to mploy Stoks Mullr formalism for analyss of nonlinar optical rsponss. Additionally, th linar polarimtry tchniqu has xtnsiv and comprhnsiv formulations for dscribing a masurmnt systm that may b applicabl to a nonlinar polarimtry xprimnt. For xampl, th dgr of polarization of an optical radiation is a usful paramtr to quantify th xtnt of cohrnt light contribution to th radiation. In addition, various filtring mchanisms xist to sparat th polarizd componnts of a radiation from non-cohrnt contributions [23, 24]. Analogous approachs xist in th nonlinar Stoks Mullr polarimtry as w will show in this papr.
2 II. THEORY OF NONLINEAR STOKES MUELLER POLARIMETRY Th gnral nonlinar Stoks Mullr quation, dscribing th rlationship btwn th gnratd nonlinar signal radiation, th nonlinar proprtis of th mdia, and th incoming radiations can b writtn as follows: s (ω σ ) = M (n) S(ω 1,ω 2,,ω n ) (1) whr s is th Stoks vctor dscribing th gnratd radiation at ω σ frquncy and prim signifis th masurd outgoing signal, M (n) is th nonlinar Mullr matrix dscribing an n th ordr light-mattr intraction, whil S is a vctor rprsnting th incoming lctric filds that gnrat th light via nonlinar intractions. Hncforth, th s and S ar calld th polarization stat vctors for outgoing and incoming radiations, rspctivly. Th lft hand sid is th outgoing radiation, which onc gnratd is simply rprsntd with an ordinary 4 1 Stoks vctor. Th right hand sid variabls at a mor basic lvl ach rprsnt two physical quantitis: th nonlinar suscptibility, which is dirctly rlatd to th structur of th matrial, and nonlinarly intracting lctric filds from th incoming light radiation. At this lvl th two ky variabls ar: ψ, or th stat function of filds that intract to produc a particular nonlinar phnomnon; and χ (n), th nonlinar suscptibility matrix that rprsnts th matrial in th contxt of polarimtry. Th polarization dnsity for nonlinar optical intractions can b statd as follows: P (n) i = χ (n) ijk m E je k E m = χ (n) ia ψ(n) A (2) whr (Einstin) summation is assumd ovr th rpatd indics. Th first indx for χ rprsnts th orintation of th outgoing polarization and th rmaining indics rprsnt th dirction of polarization for incoming lctric filds. Th rlation btwn th indx A and j,k,...,m is spcific for a givn nonlinar procss. Essntially, for an n th ordr nonlinar optical phnomna A runs from 1 to n+1, and i rprsnts th two orthogonal vctors xpanding th plan of polarization prpndicular to th dirction of light propagation [25]. Th Stoks vctor can b masurd using th light intnsity, and th nonlinar outgoing intnsity dpnds on th suscptibility and th intracting lctric filds according to th following quation: I P i P i χ ia χ ib ψ Aψ B (3) Thus, w s that Stoks and Mullr notations ar composd of products of lctric filds vctors, and products of suscptibilitis componnts, rspctivly. At th lvl of individual lctric filds, th outgoing fild, dnotd by th stat vctor Φ, is rlatd to th products of incoming nonlinar lctric filds, dnotd by th stat vctor, which intracts with th nonlinar suscptibility that is dnotd by χ (n) : Φ (ω σ ) = χ (n) (ω 1,ω 2,,ω n ) (4) In this framwork, ach componnt of vctor Φ of th gnratd lctric fild is proportional to th polarization dnsity, and it dpnds on th suscptibility tnsor componnts as wll as on th stat of th lasr polarization that has n + 1 componnts (s Eq. 2). Th stat vctor for th nonlinar combination of lctric filds in th incoming radiation is: 1 (ω 1,ω 2,,ω n ) = 2.. n+1 (5) Each lmnt of th stat vctor A (A = 1,,n+1) is an n th ordr function of on or mor lctric filds oscillations at particular frquncis. A. Outgoing Radiation Stoks Vctor Th Stoks vctor s for th outgoing lctric fild E(ω σ ) is charactrizd by a 4 1 vctor just as in th cas for convntional Stoks vctor. Lt C (ω σ ) = Φ (ω σ ) Φ (ω σ ) b th cohrncy matrix composd from th dyad of Φ, whr Φ(ω σ ) is th stat (or simply th lctric fild) vctor of th outgoing bam. signifis a tim avrag ovr an intrval long nough to mak th tim-avraging indpndnt of th intrval and fluctuations. Thn, in trms of its cohrncy matrix and Pauli matrics th outgoing fild Stoks vctor is [18, 26]: s t = Tr(C τ t ) = C ab(τ t ) ba = Φ aφ b (τ t ) ba = Φ τ t Φ (6) whr a and b ach run from 1 to 2, rprsnting th orthogonal outgoing polarization orintations prpndicular to th propagation dirction. τ t (t = 0...3) dnots th 2 2 idntity and Pauli matrics: ( ) ( ) τ 0 = τ = ( ) ( 0 1 ) (7) i τ 2 = τ = i 0 Th so-calld dgr of polarization (dop) is dfind as [27]: dop = s 12 +s 12 +s 12 /s 0 (8)
3 B. Ral-valud Vctor for Incoming Radiation Th nonlinar lctric filds hav a (n + 1) (n + 1) cohrncy matrix which is dfind as: ρ (n) (ω 1,ω 2,,ω n ) = n+1 (9) =..... n+1 ψ(n) n+1 n+1 ψ(n) 1 For nonlinar intraction of lctric filds th cofficints of xpansion for th cohrncy matrix forms a ral-valud vctor similar to th Stoks vctor. Th nonlinar cohrncy matrix can b xpandd by basis that hav highr dimnsions than th Pauli s matrics. Laving asid th dtails of th dimnsion for now, and simply dnoting this st as η, th nonlinar vctor can b writtn as: S N = Tr ( ρη N ) = ψa ψ B ( η N )BA = ψ η N ψ (10) whr N = 1,,(n+1) 2 for ach lmnt of th nonlinar vctor rprsnting th n th ordr lctric filds. Th η matrics similar to Pauli s xpand highr dimnsion stats. A subst of proprtis of η matrics ssntial for driving an n th ordr procss is: 1. Thy ar squar matrics with dimnsion (n+1) (n+1). 2. Thy ar hrmitian: η = η. 3. Thr ar (n + 1) 2 of η matrics which form th basis. 4. Oby th orthogonality Tr(η µ η ν ) = δ µν whr is a constant and ral numbr, and δ µν is th Kronckr dlta (δ µν = 1 whn µ = ν, and 0 othrwis). Th constant can b chosn to b th sam and qual to 2 for any ordr of intraction, similar to th linar cas (for Pauli matrics Tr(τ µ τ ν ) = 2δ µν ). Th rcip for finding ths matrics is givn in th sction η Matrics for Nonlinar Polarimtry. Similar to th linar Stoks paramtrs th nonlinar vctor obys th following rlation [28]: ns 2 1 (n+1) 2 N=2 S 2 N (11) whr th quality is valid for th purly polarizd stat. Thrfor, it is hlpful to us th dgr of polarization (DOP) paramtr to charactriz th fundamntal radiation using th nonlinar vctor: DOP(ω 1,ω 2,,ω n ) = (n+1)2 SN 2 /ns2 1 (12) N=2 whr DOP rangs from 0 to 1 for unpolarizd to fully polarizd fundamntal radiation, rspctivly. C. Ral-valud Matrix for Intrvning Mdium By substituting linar and nonlinar Stoks vctor xprssions (Eq. 6 and 10, rspctivly) into th gnral nonlinar polarimtry Eq. 1 th following xprssion is obtaind: Φ τ t Φ = M (n) tn ψ η N ψ (13) In this fram, ach componnt of th vctor Φ of th gnratd lctric fild is proportional to th polarization, which dpnds on th suscptibility tnsor componnts and th polarization stat of th radiation of incoming nonlinar lctric filds. By substituting xplicit xprssions of Φ and Φ into Eq. 13 in th lmntal form: χ (n) aa ψ A(τ t ) ab χ (n) bb ψ B = M (n) tn ψ A(η N ) AB ψ B (14) whr A and B = 1,,n+1. Sinc Eq. 14 is writtn in trms of individual lmnts, th stat functions of th fundamntal radiation can b droppd and th nonlinar Mullr matrix lmnts M tn can b writtn in trms of th n th ordr suscptibilitis as: χ aa(τ t ) ab χ bb = M tn (η N ) AB (15) Not, in Eq. 15 th signal is assumd to b from a singl gnrator, and an nsmbl of scattrrs hav a similar drivation, which will b shown in Sction F. Multiplying both sids by (η N ) BC and aftr summation ovr indx B, and ltting A = C: 1 χ aa (τ t ) ab χ bb (η N ) BA = M tn (16) whr (Einstin) summation is implid ovr rpatd indics (i.. a, b, A and B). is a ral-valud constant (and can b st to qual to two as will b shown in Sction E). Finally, th xprssion of a ral-valud matrix lmnt in trms of th suscptibilitis is: M tn = 1 Tr ( τ t χη N χ ) (17) This xprssion has a gnral form and is quivalnt to th linar Mullr matrix lmnt xprssion if th matrics η ar rplacd with Pauli matrics (from Eq. 7). In contrast to linar Mullr matrix lmnts, th nonlinar M is composd of nonlinar suscptibilitis and η matrics of highr dimnsion. Not that for linar polarimtry, th transformation matrix J can also b rprsntd by th linar suscptibility χ (1), in which cas th only diffrnc btwn linar and nonlinar Mullr matrix lmnts would b to rplac on Pauli matrix with an η matrix [18, 29]. This familiar form of Mullr matrix lmnts can b invstigatd similar to th linar cas. All lmnts of nonlinar matrix ar ral, a fact that lads to a vry usful and a much dsird xprssion for dtrmining th nonlinar suscptibilitis.
4 D. Exprssion of Suscptibilitis in Nonlinar Polarimtry Stoks polarimtry masurs th Mullr matrix componnts, whil nonlinar proprtis of th matrial is oftn dscribd by χ (n) tnsor componnt valus. Thus, th nxt stp is to driv xprssions for χ (n) products in trms of M (n) tn componnt valus. To this nd, w can arriv at an quivalnt conclusion by using th trac proprty Tr(AB) = vc(a T ) T vc(b), whr vc(a) = [a 1,1,...,a s,1,a 1,2,..,a s,2,...,a 1,t,...,a s,t ] T is th vctorization of a s t matrix A (in othr words columns of a matrix ar stackd blow on anothr), and its corollary Tr(A T BCD T ) = vc(a) T (D B)vc(C) on th (ral) doubl Mullr lmnts in Eq. 17 is: ( M tn = (M tn ) 1 = Tr ( τ t χη N χ )) = 1 Tr ( τ T t χ η N χt) = 1 vc(τ t ) T (χ χ )vc(η N ) (18) whr in going from th first lin to th scond w took advantag of th hrmitian proprtis of th τ and η. By ltting: vc(τ 0 ) T T vc(τ 1 ) T vc(τ 2 ) T = , (19) vc(τ 3 ) T 0 i i 0 Th matrix T is invrtibl and obys T 1 = 1 2 T. By ltting H = [vc(η1 ),,vc(η N )], w arriv at: M = T XH 1 (20) whr X = χ χ. Thrfor, H should b invrtibl and oby H 1 = 1 H. Consquntly, th suscptibility products can b asily found as: X = T 1 MH (21) Th rlationship btwn th nonlinar suscptibilitis in trms of Mullr matrix drivd in Eq. 21 is usful whn th Mullr matrix is obtaind by th polarimtry masurmnt of a sampl and th xplicit valus for th corrsponding suscptibilitis ar dsird. In th lmntal form X ij = 1 2 T it M tnh Nj, whr i = (a 1)2 + b and j = (A 1)(n + 1) + B (a and b = 1,2; A and B = 1,...,n + 1). Sinc, χ aa χ bb = χ aa χ bb i(δaa δbb), thn th rlativ phas btwn anytwosuscptibilitylmntsχ aa andχ bb canbfound according to: δ aa δ bb = aa,bb = tan ( i 1 χ aa χ bb χ ) ( bb χ aa χ aa χ bb +χ = tan 1 i X ) kl X ij bb χ aa X kl +X ij ( ) = tan 1 i T kt M tnh Nl T it M tnh Nj T kt M tnh Nl +T it M tnh Nj (22) whr k = (b 1)2+a and l = (B 1)(n+1)+A, and summations ovr rpatd indics ar assumd. Equation 22 is important bcaus it shows that by masuring th matrial nonlinar matrix, and using matrics T in Eq. 19 and H, th rlativ phas of th suscptibility lmnts can b obtaind. In nonlinar polarimtry studis, it is customary to charactriz nonlinar optical proprtis of th matrial using suscptibility valus. Thrfor, Eqs. 21 and 19 provid a mchanism to chck and compar nonlinar polarimtry invstigations with similar prvious studis using convntional nonlinar optics. For xampl, th ratio of suscptibilitis for cylindrically symmtric matrial can b calculatd for a numbr of biological structurs. E. η Matrics for Nonlinar Polarimtry Th polarization stat of incoming radiation S (Eq.10) as wll as th matrix rprsnting th nonlinar mdium M(Eq.17) rquir th (n+1) (n+1) η matrics in ordr to b dfind from th nonlinar cohrncy and suscptibility matrics, rspctivly. Th rcip for gnrating η matrics has two stps: In Stp 1 th matrix η jk is dfind such that only th valu of lmnt jk of th matrix η jk is 1, and 0 for all othr lmnts (both j and k run from 1 to n+1). This crats a two dimnsional st of matrics, whr ach lmnt of th st is a(n+1) (n+1) matrix. Not that th η ar also indpndnt basis and can xpand th cohrncy matrix. Howvr, thy ar not hrmitian and thrfor th rsulting Stoks vctor and Mullr matrix will b complx. To obtain th dsird hrmitian matrics for an n th ordr procss th following rlation can b usd: η jk +η kj, if j < k i(η jk η kj ), if j > k [( j ) ] 2 η jk = j 2 η mm jη j+1,j+1, +j (23) m=1 if 1 k = j < (n+1) 2 n+1 I n+1, if j = k = (n+1) whr I n+1 is th (n+1) (n+1) idntity matrix. Th first cas (whn j < k) th nw matrics η jk = η jk +η kj ar ral valud; th scond cas (whn j > k), th nw matrics η jk = i(η jk η kj ) ar complx valud and hav similar nonzro lmnts as to thir ral-valu countrparts in th first cas. In th third cas, (whn 1 j = k < n+1), th nw matrics ar diagonal and ral valud. Finally, in th last cas an idntity matrix is usd. In Stp 2 th two-dimnsional η st is convrtd to a on-dimnsional st of matrics[30]: η jk η N. Ths matrics satisfy all th rquirmnts as dsird for xpanding th nonlinar cohrncy matrix for th
5 nonlinar polarimtry. In addition, th nw matrics dfind in Eq. 23 nsur that η oby: Tr(η µ η ν ) = 2δ µν. For linar polarimtry n = 2 and η corrsponds to Pauli matrics. For scond-ordr procss n = 3 and thrfor th gnratd matrics ar thos of Gll-Mann s. For th cas of thr photon-polarimtry n = 4, and thr ar sixtn 4 4 matrics, which will b shown in a sprat manuscript [31]; and so forth. A usful rlations btwn ths matrics and Stoks Mullr formalism is th following: Th ral-valud η gnrat th Stoks vctor componnts that dpnd on linar polarization, whil th complx valud ons ar rsponsibl for circular componnts. Also, th ral-valud ons ar in part rsponsibl for nonzro Mullr matrix lmnts, whil th Mullr matrix componnt constructd from a complx-valud η matrix may b zro if th involvd nonlinar suscptibilitis ar ral. F. Ensmbl Rprsntation In a highly scattring mdia such as in biological tissu, th systm may not b compltly cohrnt, and th sourc of th signal may b an nsmbl of scattrrs. Thrfor, an nsmbl avrag of individual lmnts with probability p may b mor appropriat to considr [29]. Th outgoing nonlinar radiation rsulting from an nsmbl is: p χ (n), aa ψ A(τ t ) ab χ (n), bb ψ B = M (n) tn ψ A(η N ) AB ψ B (24) Sinc th abov quation is in th lmntal form, it can b rwrittn as: (τ t ) ab (p χ (n), aa χ(n), bb ) ψ A ψ B = M(n) tn (η ) N AB ψa ψ B (25) Dropping th incoming radiation from both sids, and following th drivation shown in Eqs. 14 to 17, th nsmbl rprsntation of th matrix lmnt bcoms: M (n) tn = 1 ( ) p χ (n) aa (τ t) ab χ (n) bb (η ) N BA (26) By taking th constants (τ t ) ab and (η N ) BA out of th summation, and substituting th rlation ( ) p χ (n) = χ (n) in Eq. 26, th nonlinar Mullr lmnt for th nsmbl bcoms: M (n) tn = 1 χ (n) (τ t) ab (η N ) BA (27) whr standsforth avragovrthnsmbl. Th right-hand sid of Eq. 27 has a similar form to Eq. 17, xcpt that hr an nsmbl of χ (n) ar considrd (th ordr of variabls is a non-issu bcaus both quations ar in th lmntal form). Th corrlation matrix X forming from χ (n) contains all th information about th nsmbl, and in th cas of a prfctly homognous mdium rducs to a singl sourc. Not, sinc th gnratd light is no longr originating from a singl sourc, but rathr from an nsmbl of sourcs that may not b ncssarily cohrnt, thn th outgoing radiation may not b fully polarizd. This rsult is a dsird and provids a bttr rprsntation of xprimntal data from a htrognous mdium. G. Combining Nonlinar and Linar Optical Elmnts For a stup, containing a nonlinar optical mdium followd by a train of linar optical componnts, th Mullr Stoks formalism can b usd to rlat vctor of incoming radiation to th outgoing vctor of th nonlinar radiation: s (ω σ ) = M t M 1 M (n) S(ω 1,ω 2,,ω n ) (28) whr M 1...M t ar th 4 4 linar Mullr matrics that charactrizth linar intractions, and M (n) is th 4 9 for th scond-ordr matrix, 4 16 for th third-ordr matrix, and 4 (n+1) 2 for th n th ordr nonlinar intraction. Thrfor, linar and nonlinar Stoks Mullr formalism can b appropriatly combind. As an xampl, w point to drivation of th so-calld polarizationin polarization-out PIPO quation for SHG using th doubl Stoks Mullr polarimtry [26]. Similar rlation also xist for THG intnsity quation, which w will show in an upcoming publication. III. CONCLUSION Th gnral formalism for nonlinar Stoks Mullr polarimtry is drivd. Th drivation stms from th basic nonlinar rlationship btwn th polarization dnsity and th rsultant outgoing lctric fild from an intrvning matrial du to th incoming radiation. In nonlinar polarimtry all thr componnts of th xprssion including th incoming radiation, th matrial undr study, as wll as th outgoing radiation, ar charactrizd by ral-valud paramtrs. Th stat of th incoming radiations is charactrizd by (n+1) 2 1 vctor; th sampl is rprsntd by a 4 (n + 1) 2 matrix; and th outgoing radiation is simply dtrmind by a convntional 4 1 Stoks vctor. Stats ar dscribd in trms of lctric filds, and th convntional Stoks vctors. Th nonlinar matrix M (n) is drivd in trms of nonlinar suscptibilitis. Th thortical framwork is comprhnsiv (sinc it ncapsulats all aspcts of th polarization stat for th outgoing radiation) for a givn matrial and an incoming radiation. Prvious succssful nonlinar polarimtric studis such as polarization-in polarizationout (PIPO) quations ar shown to b a particular cas of Stoks Mullr nonlinar polarimtry, whr linar
6 polarizations ar mployd in non-birfringnt and nonabsorbing matrials. Th thory dscribs th polarimtry of important two-photon ffcts such as SHG, SFG and DFG, as wll as thr-photon ffcts including THG and CARS. For ach cas th polarization stat of incoming radiations as wll as th nonlinar optical proprtis of th intrvning matrial can b dscribd in trms of masurabl polarimtric quantitis. Th cohrncy matrix is constructd from a vctor composd of lctric filds of th incoming radiation. Th xpansion of th cohrncy matrix is facilitatd by a st of matrics with uniqu proprtis and form th basis for dvlopmnt of th polarization stat vctor as wll as th suscptibility matrix. Elswhr th η matrics ar shown to b th gnralizd matrics for group SU(n+1), whr an (n+1)-dimnsional quantum systm is dscribd by(n+1) (n+1) dnsity matrix[32]. Thrfor, ths matrics may b usd for quantum-mchanical drivation of nonlinar polarimtry. For an n th -ordr procss th ovrall formalism is th sam. For xampl, th matrial matrics for sum-frquncy gnration (SFG), diffrnc-frquncy gnration (DFG) and SHG assum similar form. Similarly, th matrix for thrphoton-polarimtry shars th sam form for THG and CARS procsss. It is concivabl that a similar approach can b takn to xprss th stat for various othr frquncy mixing tchniqus including two-photon absorption, cohrnt Stoks Raman scattring (CSRS), stimulatd Raman scattring(srs), and paramtric amplification. For ach of ths tchniqus th polarization stats nds to b xprssd in trms of th lctric filds that nonlinarly intract and rsult in th nonlinar polarization dnsity. For highr-ordr tchniqus such as fourth and fifth harmonics th corrsponding highr dimnsion η matrics may b usd. [1] W. S. Bickl, J. F. Davidson, D. R. Huffman, and R.
