4 Introduction G day folks! And a haunting welcome to this publication on Tasmania s Ghosts and Hauntings, for such a small island you maybe surprised to see how many locations and structures have a haunted past. And even present! I have tried to uncover as many haunted possibilities as I could find, from other publications, websites, from ghost tours, meeting people interested in the subject that have even had experiences themselves or know someone who has, I have even looked through many newspaper clippings and magazines to bring a full directory of hauntings, ghostly sightings, experiences and more! I have even added a few investigations to some of the locations we (Team Strigoi) have conducted and had some unexplainable experiences in the process. I have tried to cover all the bases of haunted locations and I think you surprised in places that I have uncovered for you, there are a variety of locations that may have something unexplainable, or have had or still do a ghost lingering! The one thing I did set out to do was make a book solely of Tasmania s Ghosts and Haunted places, I have not added a lot or if any historical information only if it s related to the ghostly subject matter. As I wanted to see a book void of historical fact and just focused on the one thing most of us read ghostly publications for and that s the haunted bits. And indeed a lot of places we have investigated for ourselves and many have something intriguing about them, and yes some are very haunted. Anyway you can find out what phenomena we have captured on our web site. I have mentioned many places in this book and I now some are privately owned and will not want the interest from the public if it s about ghosts but there are plenty of places to visit and hear a good ghost story, included also are places that have long been pulled down or lost to time and elements, in which only the memory remains today! Anyway folks this is my first attempt in writing a publication, and I really didn t know what to say in my introduction, so thank you folks for putting up with my ramblings. I hope you find something of interest from this publication, maybe if you re a struggling paranormal investigator.this book may act like a guide for you, but what I really would like to see is people getting out there and visiting some of these locations for themselves, not only visiting the ghostly sites but the many beautiful and awe inspiring attractions and sights to behold any way folks enjoy the read and may some of you have spooky dreams! 5 Haunted Places that go under the Radar The below locations are places that are not well known where or still hauntings happen; these places may have created a strange curious attraction at one time but have become a distant or forgotten memory, which is very sad as these locations were once popular conversation pieces which have fallen between the cracks of Tasmanian ghost lore. There are dozens of places like these one s that need or hope come to the public s attention, but it s us investigators to find these places and to determine if there is a legitimate reason to say if ghosts to roam. Stone House (Sassafras) The place has long been torn down but the memory and reputation of the place still remains but why? Well the house was something to be feared of even during the day light hours, people and animals would shy past it and avoid it if it could be helped. The house was allways strange and eerie; some claimed it was haunted by a formed owner who didn t like visitors coming into his home? But on one dark night a local bloke and his faithful dog decided to spend the night inside the house to disperse the rumours of it being haunted, it is said that for hours nothing happened except for the groans the old house made. After becoming real bored the man decided to leave and as he did his dog flew into a aggressive protection mode and lunged after something in the dark, the man s torch went out and it was then he heard his dog make a shrieking whimpering sound and the silence the man torch turned on only to find his dogs lifeless body curled in a corner of the room, needless to say the man flew out of the house in such a panic that he never went back to reclaim his dogs body. Whitestones (Georgetown) This lovely Gregorian built home sits in one of Tasmania s oldest townships Georgetown. Tales of it s past ghosts have not surfaced in the last 20 years but that doesn t mean the place have been forgotten, I gather there are some local who still remember haunting tales of this beautiful old home. In the past ghostly happening ranged from the basic footsteps wandering around the second level of the house but upon inspection no-one was ever seen or found! The footsteps also were heard entering the front door and heading up the stairs, in 1956 an apparition of a ghost of a tall man with a beard and a top hat and dressed in colonial clothing was seen watching over the top landing at those who lived in the house, noone ever felt intimidated or frightened of this spirit maybe they welcomed it like another family member? Also there s a rumoured spirit of a man with his nose missing, he was said to have died of syphilis of the face? Weldbrough The whole area should be haunted; there is a very unnatural feeling in this small hamlet. But it s the area around it that has the most activity in The Star of Peace mine there are sightings of strange lights moving around the hill tops possibly past miners still living out their duties? In a cemetery not to far away called Moorina was once the Chinese main burial location, but due to grave robbing and bodies 5

6 being exhumed from the earth, there are incidents where folks have witnessed the eerie side to this cemetery and maybe the souls still linger? The Stone House is all gone, nothing remains of this once legendary house, and Whitestone has now become a private residence. Though if your ever in Sassafras try and find the location of the once haunted house the house maybe gone but I do believe something may still be there lingering! Where ever you go in Tasmania, make sure you have a camera with you at all times. Anywhere and everywhere could be a potential spot for a ghost Ghost can and will appear when you least expect it, so when you stop at one of these amazing locations go snapping madly as you never know what you may capture! 6
