The webaddress for this activity is < COLLABORATIVE LEARNING PROJECT Project Director: Stuart Scott Supporting a cooperative network of teaching professionals throughout the European Union to develop and disseminate accessible teaching materials in all subject areas and for all ages. 17, Barford Street, Islington, London N1 0QB UK Phone: 0044 (0) Fax: 0044 (0) Website: BRIEF SUMMARY OF BASIC PRINCIPLES BEHIND OUR TEACHING ACTIVITIES: The project is a teacher network, and a non-profit making educational trust. Our main aim is to develop and disseminate classroom tested examples of effective group strategies across all phases and subjects. We hope they will inspire you to use similar strategies in other topics and curriculum areas. We run teacher workshops, swapshops and conferences throughout the European Union. The project publishes a catalogue of activities plus lists in selected subject areas, and a newsletter available by post or internet: PAPERCLIPʼ. *These activities were influenced by current thinking about the role of language in learning. They are designed to help children learn through talk and active learning in small groups. They work best in mixed classes where children in need of language or learning support are integrated. They are well suited for the development of speaking and listening. They provide teachers opportunities for assessment of speaking and listening and other formative assessment. *They support differentiation by placing a high value on what children can offer to each other on a particular topic, and also give children the chance to respect each otherʼs views and formulate shared opinions which they can disseminate to peers. By helping them to take ideas and abstract concepts, discuss, paraphrase and move them about physically, they help to develop thinking skills. *They give children the opportunity to participate in their own words and language in their own time without pressure. Many activities can be tried out in mother tongue and afterwards in English. A growing number of activities are available in more than one language, not translated, but mixed, so that you may need more than one language to complete the activity. *They encourage study skills in context, and should therefore be used with a range of appropriate information books which are preferably within reach in the classroom. *They are generally adaptable over a wide age range because children can bring their own knowledge to an activity and refer to books at an appropriate level. The activities work like catalysts. *All project activities were planned and developed by teachers working together, and the main reason they are disseminated is to encourage teachers to work effectively with each other inside and outside the classroom. They have made it possible for mainstream and language and learning support teachers to share an equal role in curriculum delivery. They should be adapted to local conditions. In order to help us keep pace with curriculum changes, please send any new or revised activities back to the project, so that we can add them to our lists of materials.

2 The Tempest Notes for Teachers Character Card Activity - The three sets of cards relate to the three different groups of characters/stories in the play: the love story (Ferdinand and Miranda), the revenge story (Alonso, Antonio, Sebastian and Gonzalo) and the Masters and Servants story (Caliban, Ariel, Trinculo and Stephano). Prospero and Ariel are included in all the groups. This makes up to 15 character cards so for a class of thirty, by doubling groups, everyone would participate. You will need to print each card set in a different colour to make organising the groups easier Connect Four Activity - not completed yet

3 The Tempest - Character Cards Everyone in the class takes or is given a character card. Everyone should read the information on the card two or three times. You do not have to remember the card word for word, but have a good idea about the information on it. Put the card in your pocket or out of sight and then find one other person in the room with the same coloured card as you. Pretend to be the character and introduce yourself to your new partner: eg. "Hello! My name is Miranda and I am Prospero's daughter...". Your partner should do the same to you. Remember! if either of you get stuck, you can take out your card and look at it. But only if you are stuck. Listen carefully to each other. Now go to find all the other people with the same colour card as you. Now you are a group, you have to introduce your partner to the others and they have to introduce each other to you. eg: "Hello! Can I introduce you to my partner His name is Trinculo...

I am a portly fellow and like to dress in a way that befits my station in life. I also like a drink now and then, just to be sociable I am an old man and I live on the island with my daughter, Miranda. I have a blue cloak, embroidered with silver, a carved staff and a book as thickly and richly bound as the bible I am a monstrous, deformed creature and I live on the island. My mother was a foul witch called Sycorax My name is Trinculo I am the king of Naples' jester. My job is to make him laugh. Unfortunately I am not getting any younger and all my jokes are old too.

I fall in love easily, but I have not met my ideal woman. I live on the island with my ageing father, Prospero, whom I love and respect. I am young and beautiful, and because I have lived on the island since I was tiny I have not met another human being

I am neither beast nor human, but I endlessly change between them. I can perform many wondrous kinds of magic. I am an old man and I live on the island with my daughter, Miranda. I have a blue cloak, embroidered with silver, a carved staff and a book as thickly and richly bound as the bible I am the duke of Milan and Prospero's brother. My brother wasted his time with books while I kept my eye on important matters. I have so much ability, I would not be surprised if I became king one day. I am an old councillor to the King of Naples. There are many around me who plot and scheme, but I am honest and remain loyal to my king and those who treat me well. My name is Alonso My name is Sebastian I am the King of Naples. I love good food and expensive clothes. Some people think I am feeble, but I try to be a noble king. I am the king of Naples' brother. It makes me angry that he is the king, when he is so vain and feeble. I am a man of the real world and would do the job much better.
