1 Name: Outcome E CER Part 1 Graphic Organizer Directions: Based on your understanding of faults, plates and stresses, along with the use of your data, what can you infer about the relationship between earthquakes and volcanoes? (PROMPT 1) Write down as many as you can as we work together as a class to complete the assignment. First hour Claim: There are many similarities between earthquakes and volcanoes. They share similar locations near each other, on our mapping activity they were all near each other they are happening on plate boundaries, a lot happen at the Ring of Fire They can happen on land and water underwater volcanoes create islands. The mapping activity showed us the locations of both, some were located on continents and some in the middle of the ocean. they are both very destructive Bring up the Kilauea volcano article. How it s non explosive but still destructive. Bring up the video about the earthquake and how destructive it was. They both occur on divergent and convergent boundaries say how they are both formed. Talk about which directions they are moving and where the magma, talk about mid ocean ridge and subduction. Remember during subduction the plates melt. They can cause each other. Volcanoes cause earthquakes. Magma chamber moving/magma rising causes the ground/plates to move and shake causing an earthquake.

Build up energy. when the plates meet the energy is released that was built up. At a divergent boundary plates move and the magma rises and the energy is released. they are both formed at similar locations. they are at the edges of tectonic plate boundaries. The mapping activity that we did in class showed the locations of these. The ring of fire. Convergent and divergent boundaries. The middle of the ocean. (These are the locations that they share) They are both caused by the movement of tectonic plates. explain how they move. they both occur at divergent and convergent boundaries. Volcanoes cause earthquakes. what specifically do volcanoes do to make an earthquake happen? Explain what stress is applied to create both.

Volcanoes and the weather helps tell when they will erupt. Can use devices to read data. Volcanoes cause earthquakes. when they about to erupt the magma rises pressure builds, starts shaking the ground and the plates move. They both form at convergent and divergent boundaries. talk about the stress at the boundaries and their affect, talk about which way the plates move, talk about subduction and how magma forms, talk about magma forming at the mid ocean ridge.

They are both located near each other. ring of fire, near the edges of tectonic plates, talk about the mapping activity and how it showed where they were all located. They are both very dangerous. describe how both earthquakes and volcanoes release their energy or erupt. EQ: slide past each other, stress builds up, eventually released and the ground shakes and causes destruction. Volcanoes= the magma rises up at the convergent boundary, when it erupts it destroys things in its path. Volcanoes cause earthquakes. explain why/how this happens. The volcano shakes the plates because the magma is rising and pressures is increasing. As it shakes the plates an earthquake could occur. They are both located at convergent and divergent boundaries. talk about the direction the plates are moving. Convergent=one plate sinks, then melts to magma then the magma slowly rises, and erupts up through the mid ocean ridge. At a divergent boundary, plates separate and magma rises up through the mid ocean ridge and erupts along the edges.

Convergent=collide, subduct/sinks into the mantle and melts, then it rises and erupts out of the volcano or mid ocean ridge. Dv=away, magma comes up through cracks/rifts and erupts along mid ocean ridge/volcanoes. Somewhat predictable. they are both formed from changes in the plates. Volcanoes cause earthquakes. when the volcano is about to erupt it shakes and the pressure increases, when it shakes it is shaking the tectonic plates, they are moving and can cause an earthquakes\ to happen. they both have different types.
