The two new species described in the present paper also belong to the Tityus usthenes group. Tityus matthieseni n. sp. (fig. 1-8) Material. Male holotype : Boca do rio Matupiri (0" 30's - 61" 10' W), rio Madeira, Amazonas, Brazil, 11.XII. 1975, Expedi~go permanente a Amazania leg., MZSP-15,174. Collected over brushes on "Terra Firme" forest at a rainy night. Deposited in the Museu de Zoologia, University of Sgo Paulo. Etymology. Patronym in honor of Dr Fabio A. Matthiesen, formerly of the Universidade Estadual Paulista, Rio Claro, for his contribution to the study of the biology of scorpions. Description. Based on male holotype. Measurements in table I. Coloration. Basically brownish. Anterior portion of carapace with a triangle darker than the remainder parts of body. Ocular tubercle blackish, surrounded by a large black stripe.vesicle paler than segment V. Pedipalps yellowish, except

Legs brownish with diffuse yellowish spots, tarsus yellowish. Morphology. Carapace strongly granular ; anterior margin with a median concavity. Anterior median superciliary keels moderate, posterior median keels strong. Medio-posterior and latero-posterior furrows very deep, other furrows moderate. Eyes separate by more than one ocular diameter. Three pairs of lateral eyes. Sternum subtriangular.

Ventral aspect of both fingers and manus with dense and long setae. Pedipalp. Femur pentacarinate ( ventrolateral kccli lestigia:): tibia with 7 keels; chela with 6 kcels. Taxonomic position. Thc new species belongs to the Tious usthrnrs group of species. It can be associated w:th Tihus tuc.urui Idourenc;o ; however. it can readily be distinguished from this last species by different morphometric values. with lesh bulky pedipalps and metasomal segment V (scc table 1) and by a diffcrent disposition of sorne trichobothria: esh and rh in fixed finger and Et in the chela being more basal than in T. rucurui. Metasoma. Segments I-IV with dorsolateral and lateral supramedian keels crenulate; lateral inframedian keels on segment I of moderate size, crenulate; on segments I-IV weakly developed ; one pair of lateral keels vestigial on segments , absent on IV-V. Intracarinal spaces feebly granular in all segments. Segment V with one ventromedian keel; ventrolateral and dorso-median weakly developed ; dorso-median space smooth. Telson

Cheliceral dentition characteristic of the family Buthidae (VACHON, 1963) ; ventral aspect of both fingers and manus with dense and long setae. Pedipalps : femur pentacarinate (ventro-lateral vestigial) ; tibia with 8 keels ; chela long and slender, with 6 keels; movable fingers with 17 oblique rows of granules. Trichobothriotaxy : orthobothriotaxy A-a (VACHON, 1973 ; 1975). Legs : tarsus ventrally with numerous short and fine setae. Female. General coloration much darker than that of male; sternite 111 with a yellowish triangle with the base narrower than high. Metasomal segments shorter than male (see table I) ; segment I11 with vestigial keels. Venter: basal middle lamellae of pectines dilated; pectines with tooth. Pedipalps shorter and more bulky than male.

Taxonomic position. The new species belongs to the Tityus asthenes group of species. It can be associated with Tityus catnbridgei Pocock, 1897 ; however, it can readily be distinguished from this last species by some differences in the morphometric values (see table I) and by a different disposition of some trichobothria, et and est in fixed finger being more proximal and Est in the chela being more basal than in 7: cambridgei.
