1 ANNA PAULINE MIRANDA MICHEL 215 Bowen Hall Princeton University Princeton, NJ (617) web.mit.edu/amichel/www EDUCATION Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program Ph.D. in Mechanical and Oceanographic Engineering, August Thesis: Laboratory evaluation of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) as a new in situ chemical sensing technique for the deep ocean, Advisor: Dr. Alan Chave, WHOI. Thesis Summary: As present day expeditionary oceanography using ships and submersibles begins to shift to a long term, ocean observatory mode, a greater need for in situ sensors will exist. New chemical sensing techniques capable of analyzing deep ocean environments are needed. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) possesses many of the characteristics required for such in situ sensing and is capable of elemental detection of solids, liquids, and gases. Laboratory experimentation is used in this thesis to validate the LIBS technique for the detection of dissolved analytes in a simulated deep ocean environment Massachusetts Institute of Technology M.S. Ocean Engineering, Thesis: Experimental Flow Characterization of Anguilliform Swimming Motion, Thesis Advisor: Professor M. S. Triantafyllou, MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology B.S.
