Investigating Regional Seafloor Hazards Using NOAA Multibeam Data and the Relationship of These Detected Seafloor Hazards with Oil and Gas Installations in the Gulf Of Mexico. Erick Huchzermeyer
Hypothesis/Experiment Can multibeam seep studies actually be used to help predict the feasibility of seabed infrastructure installation? Hypothesis Multibeam data that includes water column, backscatter, and bathymetry can provide insight into the feasibility of subsea infrastructure. Experiment interpret seabed hazards from NOAA bathymetry/seep surveys in the Gulf of Mexico and ground truth the results with existing oilfield infrastructure.

Interpretation Methods - Hardgrounds High reflectivity Related to, seafloor faults, chaotic seafloor, seeps, or near expulsion feature chaotic appearance, or aligned in a direction not large homogenous area
Interpretation Methods Hardgrounds
Interpretation Methods Slumps Medium to high seafloor reflectance. The slump debris proceeds downhill and was homogenous in reflectance. A detachment scarp is visible in the bathymetric data.
Interpretation Methods Pockmarks Localized depression visible in bathymetry The interior has medium to low reflectance. No seeps identified with the feature
