IGMAC 2015: Surficial Geologic Mapping STATEMAP past and future Valparaiso Moraine, Will County presented by Drew Phillips, September

SURFICIAL MAPPING Completed Aug 2015 NE Illinois Project: Sag Bridge Frankfort Manhattan S Illinois Project: Keyesport

SURFICIAL MAPPING Started Sept 2015 NE Illinois Project: Mokena Mahomet SE Illinois Project: Mount Carmel Keensburg

SURFICIAL MAPPING Proposing FY 2016 NE Illinois Project: Romeoville, Joliet Monticello SE Illinois Project: Pleasant Mound Saint Francisville

NE Illinois Project Wisconsin Episode landscape, with deposits of multiple ice phases Romeoville & Joliet will advance Will County project Monticello will build on recent mapping over Mahomet Aquifer

NE Illinois Project Proposing FY2016 Romeoville, Joliet Monticello

Frankfort, Sag Bridge: Results FY2014 O. Caron, B. Curry (PI s) Sag Bridge: History of Chicago Outlet Frankfort: Surficial glaciolacustrine deposits common Frankfort: Thick tongue of outwash consistently found between the Wadsworth Formation and the Yorkville Member. Sparse available well records indicate that it is not used as a water resource Wadsworth Formation and Yorkville Member (Lemont Formation) differentiable, but intervening Haeger Member more challenging

Key stratigraphic problem: Wadsworth Fm and Haeger Mbr differentiable in Sag Bridge In Frankfort, Yorkville identified, but variable lithology of Wadsworth Fm hard to differentiate from Haeger Mbr Upper diamicton beds there mapped as Wedron Formation, undifferentiated The discovery of new sections near Romeoville and Joliet should allow correlation and reassessment of depositional environments Note: further discussion this afternoon

Romeoville & Joliet: Justification O. Caron (PI) Answer key stratigraphic questions Rapid growth in Will County/south Chicago Near proposed Illiana Expressway and 3 rd airport Builds county project Beyond 2-5 yr plan because of discoveries, GLGMC work

NE Illinois Project Recent results, proposed quads Romeoville, Joliet Monticello

Monticello Quadrangle: Setting (A. Stumpf, PI)

Monticello Quadrangle: Setting (cont.) Complex late-glacial ice-marginal landscape Ambiguity of till composition moraines Glacial legacy important in Sangamon River history Recent regional mapping, current mapping of Mahomet quad (Grimley, Stumpf)

Monticello Quadrangle: Setting (cont.) Thick morainal deposits overlie buried Mahomet Bedrock Valley >300 ft. of Quaternary sediment above bedrock Bedrock valley substantially narrows under area A Possible interactions between surface groundwater noted by ISWS A New Pub!: Geologic cross sections across Mahomet Bedrock Valley IMAP 19

Monticello Quadrangle: Justification Buried valley glacial aquifers: water supply and protection; aquifer connectivity Decipher late-glacial landscape by landform analysis Pleistocene stratigraphy, ice dynamics, and chronology: towards updating the state-wide surficial geology map Framework for CZO research Follows 2-5 yr plan

SE ILLINOIS PROJECT Proposing FY2016 Pleasant Mound Saint Francisville

SE Illinois Project Illinois Episode landscape, with proglacial Wisconsin Episode valley and eolian deposits Pleasant Mound will continue Kaskaskia Valley after hiatus St. Francisville will connect recent Wabash Valley mapping with first cooperative project

Keyesport: Results FY2014 (Dave Grimley, PI) extensive proglacial outwash esker fan (outwash) shallow to bedrock till exposed along Carlyle Lake bedrock exposed near Carlyle Dam test hole: buried sand and gravelly sand at ft depth

SE ILLINOIS PROJECT Proposing FY2016 Pleasant Mound new discoveries of aggregate resources (limited in region) groundwater reserves earthquake hazards from New Madrid or Wabash Seismic Zone Scientific Research: deglacial history of the Kaskaskia Sublobe; origin of long, streamlined hills; Extent of Pearl outwash terrace? (undermapped on Lineback, 1979)

Esker-fan systems --- Illinois Episode deglaciation? esker fan Pleasant Mound esker fan Stolletown Keyesport

Southern Illinois Seismic Hazard Wabash Valley Seismic Zone New Madrid Seismic Zone Seismic risk classified as Annualized Earthquake Loss in dollars per million people, by county. Redrawn from FEMA (2008).

SE ILLINOIS PROJECT Proposing FY2016 Pleasant Mound St. Francisville

Wabash Valley Mapping since 2011 D. Phillips (PI) 3 +1 STATEMAP, 1 EDMAP Cooperation with IGS Slackwater lake sequences Archives of glacial meltwater, paleoclimate, deglaciation? Meandering stream framework Chronology, sedimentation stream dynamics Paleoseismic features Framework for groundwater supply

Current projects include Alluvial complex Bend dynamics and cutoff processes with Best, Rhoads, and students (coring, gpr study) Cutoff sedimentation (S. Oxley, Dept. Geog.) Terrace and cutoff chronology Compile geology into single database Geomorphic map Uplands terraces

Quad Map Status 1999? proposed current 2012 dropped (EDMAP)

St. Francisville Setting "e Vincennes LAWRENCE WABASH Saint Francisville "e Mount Carmel KNOX "e GIBSON 4 Miles

St. Francisville Setting Saint Francisville outwash terrace Levee - delta LAWRENCE WABASH alluvial terrace Bedrock upland Slackwater terrace Allendale Lower terraces, Floodplain, cutoffs 1 Miles

Saint Francisville: Justification "e Vincennes Groundwater in Wabash V. fill Paleoseismic features Aggregate resources Meander cutoffs: chronology, sedimentology, ecosystems Slackwater lake deposits Wisconsin-Holocene transition LAWRENCE WABASH Saint Mt. Carmel Francisville "e Mount Carmel KNOX "e GIBSON 4 Miles

SUMMARY -- Proposed Surficial Geologic Mapping FY2016 NE ILLINOIS PROJECT (Wisconsin Ep. glacial terrain) Romeoville & Joliet Quadrangles Societal needs: groundwater resources, smart growth issues, aggregate Scientific research: stratigraphy: the Wadsworth-Haeger Problem Monticello Quadrangle Societal needs: groundwater resources, aquifer protection, aggregate Scientific research: moraine-till correlations, late Pleistocene chronology, CZO framework SE ILLINOIS PROJECT (Illinois Ep. glacial and Wisconsin Ep. proglacial terrain) Pleasant Mound and Saint Francisville Quadrangles Societal needs: groundwater, flooding, aggregate, seismic hazard, river ecology Scientific research: Illinois Ep. deglacial dyamics, slackwater lake chronology and ecology, glacial-postglacial transition, river meandering framework
