1 Lincoln Caverns, near Huntingdon, has designed specialized workshops to specifically fulfill PATCH/BADGE requirements for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Plan now to join girls from Pennsylvania and surrounding states for our eighteenth year of older Girl Scout Events! Event dates are ideal for small troops to complete the patches/badges, since no minimum number of participants or fees per troop are required. Event dates are limited to girls, leaders, and GSUSA registered parents; siblings cannot be accommodated on these dates. REGISTRATION IS ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVE BASIS, and dates fill quickly - PLEASE MAIL YOUR REGISTRATION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE or register online at today! We ll have your bags boxed and ready for your troop to sift for real gems in our sluice during your gift shop break or following your workshops. The majority of Scouts visiting us pan for gems - help them save by ordering in advance! TIE DYE MAP BANDANAS Great souvenir for the whole group! It s a map you can wear the tie-dye bandana is printed with a map of Lincoln Caverns & Whisper Rocks with a bat border! Lincoln Caverns Map Bandanas are available for $6.50 each (advance purchase, with registration ONLY) when purchasing a minimum of one for each Scout registered. (Bandanas may be purchased for adults if you wish. Bandanas are available in the gift shop for $6.99 on day of visit. SCOUT DAY T-SHIRTS: Remember your scouting adventure with a shirt designed especially for scouts. Lincoln Caverns Scout Day T-Shirts are available for $10.00 each (advance purchase, with registration ONLY) when purchasing a minimum of one for each Scout registered. (Shirts may be purchased for adults if you wish. Add $2/XXL shirt purchased) $10.99 on day of visit ($12.99for XXL). 2

3 PRIMITIVE CAMPING: Secluded group clusters in the woods atop Warrior Ridge. Each cluster features picnic tables, trash barrels, fire rings, and porta-johns. Water for putting out fires is available on site. Firewood is available for $5.00/tub. No outside firewood is permitted. (Find out more at ) Drinking water must be transported from Lincoln Caverns Visitors Center. Access is conveniently located just off Route 22 via a gravel road. Camping available as many nights as needed - no limit to length of stay. FEE PER NIGHT: Choose this option and save $2.50/person/night. How caves form, the growth of speleothems (cave formations), cave life, and cave conservation. Guided Tours of Lincoln Caverns and Whisper Rocks: Special interpretive tours with plenty of time for questions; reviewing topics discussed in the slide presentation and completing a portion of Geology Hike (Digging), Natural Area Visit (Wildlife), or Caves & Karst Earthcache (Hi Tech Hide & Seek). *Girls are required to take/draw pictures of their hike to share at a later date. Overnight programs will include a special FLASHLIGHT cavern tour. All participants are required to bring a flashlight! THE WORKSHOPS: ROCKS & MINERALS: Define GEOLOGY. 12 Stations observing characteristics of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock and performing identification tests such as color, hardness, streak & luster. Put together your own rock collection. (Each scout takes home their own rock collection.) CAVES, KARST, & CONSERVATION WORKSHOP: Discuss how caves form and learn about the importance of protecting karst landscapes from pollution. Girls will engage in a conservation themed activity, using their knowledge to plan a town in a karst terrain. SOIL & GROUNDWATER: Learn about filtering properties of soil, types of aquifers and their effect on groundwater. Explore environmental problems common in areas of 'karst terrain'. Make posters to display in your community about the protection of groundwater. FOSSILS & GEOLOGIC TIME: Learn about geological history by constructing a large wall chart with significant geological events. Learn how fossils formed and how they aid in understanding the earth's history. Make a fossil cast and search for your own fossil to take home. CAREERS IN GEOLOGY: Each Digging workshop will include information about careers related to the workshop topic. This discussion will be completed during the wrap-up session at the end of program. INTRO TO MAMMALS & BATS OF THE WORLD: Characteristics of invertebrates, vertebrates, and mammals, classification of mammals (and bats), life cycle of a bat and follow-up observation discussions. How A Bat Compares To Me interactive activity. RESEARCH MAMMALS (Bats): Each Scout (or group) will research one bat and share information with the entire group, followed by a review of species from Scouts home state. WHAT DO BATS EAT? Learn how different bat species have special adaptations according to the food they eat. Research and share a simple bat food chain. Girls should plan a follow-up service with younger girls and share their food web game. BAT HOUSES: Find out why we need to protect bats and build bat house(s) to aid in their protection. Build approx. one house per 10 girls as a service project. (Each troop will get a bat house to put up in their community.) LETTERBOXING: Put together materials for your own letterboxing adventure. Girls will use their creativity to make their own letterboxing stamp. Girls will also get the opportunity to hide & seek a letterbox. HOW & WHY OF GPS: Learn the basics of geocaching. Girls will be taught how to use GPS units. 3

4 GEOCACHE HUNT: Hunt for geocaches by following proper guidelines and etiquette. COMPASSES & MAPPING: Learn the basics of orientation; how to use a compass, read maps, and make maps. SCHEDULES ALSO INCLUDE: Two 45 minute breaks for gift shop, restrooms, and lunch (included Saturday lunch is two slices of pizza and applesauce; Sunday lunch is an Italian sub and chips from Original Italian Pizza. Both meals include choice of water or soda.) Also included is indoor slumber party style lodging - bring your sleeping bags and pillows - there is space to sleep up to 50 persons comfortably upstairs in our learning center, plus a smaller room downstairs for additional persons and/or the men in your group. Restroom facilities are located in the Visitors Center wing of our facility and refrigeration is available in our upstairs facility. No showers or indoor cooking facilities are provided, however a variety of eating establishments are located within three miles. If you are to begin your program at 6:00 PM you should plan a supper stop prior to arrival. (Overnight programs with INDOOR lodging include evening snack of popcorn and drink following evening program) * A $25.00 late arrival fee will be charged for group arrivals after 9:00 PM. Most activities are under cover and/or indoors, however participants must walk outside between workshops (& for the surface tour). RAINGEAR IS REQUIRED! Warm clothing will be needed on some dates, and a jacket is a MUST for the cavern tour on ALL dates. Rubber non-slip soled shoes with good treads are also REQUIRED. Please indicate with a note on your roster if there are Girl Scouts with special needs who must be accompanied by a specific adult for the day. Sorry, but no special requests for girls to be grouped together can be honored. Although the cavern and surface tours are not entirely wheelchair accessible, the workshop, slide program facilities, gift shop and restrooms are. We will be glad to make arrangements for special tours for a Girl Scout with special needs. THIS MUST BE REQUESTED WITH YOUR REGISTRATION, as an additional staff person will be necessary. PLEASE CALL Lincoln Caverns IN ADVANCE, when possible, if there are changes to your roster. (Adults and/or girls) This will save time during registration. Registration form, rosters and BALANCE DUE must be received TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO YOUR EVENT DATE. A confirmation of your troop's acceptance, along with a FACT SHEET containing complete details and further instructions will be sent via or USPS upon receipt of your registration. PLEASE NOTE on your roster if you have an adult FIRST-AIDER with your group. Lincoln Caverns does have firstaiders on staff that will be called upon ONLY in the event that your first-aider is not available. First aid supplies are available for your use. A first-aider is REQUIRED for all overnight events. In the meantime, please feel free to call if you have any questions! Phone , .
