Proceedings of the Ocean Drilling Program, Scientific Results Volume DATA REPORT: STABLE ISOTOPES FROM SITES 47 AND 48 Xinrong Cheng, 2 Quanhong Zhao, 2 Jiliang Wang, 2 Zhimin Jian, 2 Peifen Xia, 2 Baoqi Huang, 2 Dianyong Fang, 2 Jian Xu, 2 Zhen Zhou, 2 and Pinxian Wang 2 T. Planktonic foraminifer oxygen and carbon isotope data, p. 8 INTRODUCTION Sites 47 (8 50. N, E; water depth = 3246 m) and 48 ( N, E; water depth = 3294 m) are located on the lowermost continental slope off southern China near the continent/ ocean crust boundary of the South China Sea Basin. Site 47 is located upslope ~0.45 nmi west of Site 48. Three advanced piston corer holes at Site 47 and two extended core barrel holes at Site 48 were cored and combined into a composite (spliced) stratigraphic section, which provided a relatively continuous profile for the lower Oligocene to Holocene (Wang, Prell, Blum, et al., 2000; Jian, et al., 200) for studying stratigraphy and paleoceanography. A total of 047 planktonic foraminifers stable isotope measurements were performed on 975 samples covering the upper meters composite depth at ~42-cm intervals (Tables T, T2), and a total of 864 benthic foraminifers measurements were performed on 650 samples in the upper 837. mcd at ~5-cm intervals (Tables T3, T4). We significantly improved the time resolution of the benthic stable isotope record in the upper mcd by reducing the average sample spacing to ~29 cm. This translates into an average sampling resolution of ~6 k.y. for the Miocene sequence and ~8 k.y. for the Pliocene Holocene interval, assuming a change in sedimentation rates from ~.8 to ~3.5 cm/k.y., as suggested by shipboard stratigraphy. These data sets provide the basis for upcoming studies to establish an oxygen isotope stratigraphy and examine the Neogene evolution of deep and surface water signatures (temperature, salinity, and nutrients) in the South China Sea. 2 DATA REPORT: SITE 47 AND 48 STABLE ISOTOPES 2 METHODS Samples were oven-dried at 60 C and washed through a 63-µm sieve. Well-preserved specimens were chosen from the coarse-fraction residues and cleaned with analytical grade ethanol ( 99.7%) in an ultrasonic bath. They were dried again in an oven at 60 C and reacted with orthophosphoric acid in an automatic carbonate device (Kiel III) at 70 C to generate CO 2. The escaping CO 2 was then transferred to a Finnigan MAT252 mass spectrometer for measurement of stable isotopes at the Laboratory of Marine Geology in Tongji University, People s Republic of China. The epibenthic species Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi was preferred for isotope analysis because various studies have demonstrated that the δ 3 C value of this species is approximately equal to bottom water δ 3 C and is therefore a good proxy for reconstructions of deepwater ventilation (McCorkle and Keigwin, 994). In intervals where C. wuellerstorfi was absent in the sediments, other benthic foraminifers were analyzed (Table T5) to obtain a complete oxygen isotope record. Globigerinoides ruber was mainly used for the upper 65 mcd, and Globigerinoides sacculifer was used for the lower part. Because of isotopic differences between species, adjustments were made to account for taxon-dependent deviations from seawater isotopic equilibrium using the adjustment factors given in Table T5, according to Shackleton et al. (995), Shackleton and Hall (983, 990), and Z. Jian et al. (2003, unpubl. data). When several measurements were made on different planktonic or benthic foraminifers from the same sample, the adjusted average value was used (Tables T, T2, T3, T4). Precision was regularly checked with the Chinese national carbonate standard GBW Conversion to the international Peedee belemnite (PDB) scale was performed using NBS9 and NBS8 standards: δ 3 C = 0.57, δ 8 O = 8.49 ); the standard deviation was 0.07 for δ 8 O and 0.04 for δ 3 C for measurements carried out during the years RESULTS The chronological framework of the upper 837.-m composite section (~32.7 Ma to present) at Sites 47 and 48 is based on biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy (Wang, Prell, Blum, et al., 2000; Z. Jian et al., unpubl. data). The isotope records below mcd (~ Ma) cannot be used as a paleoclimatic indicator because all the calcareous microfossils were heavily mineralized (Zhao et al., 200a) as a result of diagenesis. However, oxygen and carbon isotope measurements from the upper mcd (Fig. F) are considered to reflect paleoceanographic changes in the northern South China Sea since ~26.5 Ma (Fig. F2). The oxygen isotope record of benthic foraminifers can be divided into three major intervals: 0 3.2, , and Ma (Fig. F2). Its steplike variation indicates a general cooling trend for the past 26.5 m.y., which is most obvious since 3.2 Ma (Figs. F2, F3). The steplike cooling may be equivalent to major ice sheet expansions, as mentioned by Lear et al. (2000). Both benthic and planktonic δ 3 C display a generally decreasing trend (Zhao et al., 200b) with obvious increases in δ 3 C at and Ma, the latter case marking the Monterey carbon positive excursion. The planktonic foraminifer δ 8 O record significantly differs from the benthic record, possibly indicating regional changes in sea-surface temperature and/or salinity during the Neogene. T5.
