3 Appendix A Exploratory Borings and Test Pits This appendix describes the methods used for the field investigations and presents the results of the investigations. The explorations described in this section were conducted in accordance with the methods presented in the Geotechnical Investigation Work Plans prepared for the project (URS, 8). A. CORE BORING LOGS Two HQ- wireline core borings (hole diameter of.8 inches and core diameter of. inches) were drilled on the ridge separating the Carmel River from San Clemente Creek as shown on Figure -. The borings were drilled between September and 9, 8 and ranged in depth from to below ground surface (bgs). Both boring CB- and CB- were drilled vertically. A summary of core borings is presented in Table - of the main text. The borings were drilled with an LF- drill rig that was transported to the site with a helicopter. The helicopter also transported all pumps, drill rods and other equipment needed for the drilling operation. Water for drilling was pumped to the site through a -inch flexible line laid on the ground surface between the drill site and the Carmel River. Core drilling was initiated at the ground surface and then a.-inch diameter HW steel casing was advanced through the overburden to prohibit any caving within the weathered zone. The surface casing was sealed in place by placing bentonite in the annular space around the top of the casing. Rock coring was performed using an HQ- diamond impregnated drill bit (.8-inch outside diameter). The core samples were recovered using a HQ- wireline triple tube core barrel. The recovered cores were photographed and logged in the field. Field descriptions included rock type and degree of weathering, discontinuity characteristics, fracture locations and frequency, and rock quality designation (RQD). After logging, the core samples were placed in wooden core boxes for transport and are presently stored in the metal shed located next to San Clemente Dam. The field logs were reviewed by a senior engineering geologist and the core boxes photographed. During the review samples were taken for laboratory testing. After the completion of downhole geophysical logging in CB- and CB-, one Geokon, Inc. Series S vibrating wire piezometer was installed at a depth of in boring CB-. The VWP was installed in a neat cement grout tremied to the surface of the boring. Boring CB- was backfilled with neat cement grout tremied to the surface. A Key to Log of Borings is presented on Figure A-. The Core Boring Logs are presented on Figures A- and A-. A. ROTARY WASH BORING LOGS Five rotary wash borings having a total footage of 9. were drilled in the alluvial channel of Carmel River to investigate soil and groundwater conditions at the diversion dike and stabilized sediment slope areas. The locations of the borings are shown in Figure -. These borings were drilled by Pitcher Drilling of East Palo Alto, CA between October, 8 and October 9, 8. A summary of core borings is presented in Table - of the main text. The borings were drilled to depths ranging from to 8. bgs using a Fraste Multi-Drill XL track-mounted drill rig. Soil samples were obtained using a modified California (MC) sampler and a Standard Penetration Test (SPT) sampler. The MC sampler had a nominal inside and X:\X_WATER\SAN CLEMENTE DAM REMOVAL - 88\GEOTECHNICAL\GDR REPORT\FIL_GDR MAY.DOC\-MAY-\\ A-

5 Appendix A Exploratory Borings and Test Pits The soils were classified as they were encountered during excavation and samples were transported to the laboratory for analysis. Test pit logs were prepared based on the field logs and laboratory test results and are presented on Figures A-9 and A-. A. GROUNDWATER LEVEL MEASUREMENTS Groundwater level information was collected during drilling of core borings, rotary wash borings and test pit excavations. If a boring was drilled over the course of two or more days, an attempt was made to measure the groundwater level each morning before drilling was resumed. These readings may not reflect a state of equilibrium due to the short interval of time allowed for recovery and the presence of drilling fluids. The groundwater level in a test pit was measured from the top of the pit during excavation if free water associated with groundwater was observed. Results of the water level readings obtained during drilling are shown on the boring logs presented in this appendix. In addition, Table - in the text of the report presents the results of readings obtained during drilling and from the vibrating wire piezometer installed in boring CB-.
