Data and Information Management UK All Energy 22 nd May 2013 Presented by Leo James
Strategic Development Plans Observations at the outset Data and information management and dissemination: company or development team specific based on the individual strategic development plan for the field, farm or project From the geo perspective. Bathymetric and geophysical data are generally acquired as part of the dataset for the production of the environmental statement. Managed by the development/consenting team Geotechnical data is generally acquired by the engineering team Managed by the engineering team
A starting point... Dogger Bank a Round 3 Megasite From a foundation engineering perspective. Forewind are a consortium comprising RWE, Statoil, Statkraft and SSE Dogger Bank Round 3 zone is ~8660 km 2 currently world s largest offshore wind farm Water depths range from m ( feet) Located km ( miles) offshore The Site is sub divided into Tranches Each Tranche will contain ~3 project areas or windfarms of ~200 turbines (1.2GW) Each tranche will apply for Licence to Consent separately Estimated capacity agreed target 9GW What needs to be done to build a 4D-understanding of Dogger Bank? i.e spatial stratigraphy and mechanical properties through time ( a need to investigate the evolution of the area to understand today s Dogger Bank) in order that it can be developed.

Recycling Information Bathymetry, AGDS data, side scan sonar data For site selection Data for PhD studentships, research purposes Benthic habitat assessment Benthic and Environmental Video and Grab Sampling Information Photographs & seabed features chart to archaeologists Photographs & particle size for ground truth of seabed features chart Particle size data for seabed processes (scour analysis) Cross referenced with shallow geological interpretation for sand thickness map Particle size data for cable burial & trenching assessment Particle size data and photographs for geological model AGDS Acoustic Ground Discrimination System
Additional uses of archaeological information What relevance does archaeological information have for foundation engineering? Archaeologists are interested in: Age of soils/sediments Shallow channels Terrestrial land surfaces Palaeoenvironment Wrecks Anything interesting /unusual or old Deposition rates vs consolidation rates Geological period of deposition Depositional hiatus unconformities Aging Areal extent of channels Possible channel fill - very soft clay - organic rich - sand filled Possible source of material Depositional environment Extent of land surfaces - cementation Desiccation & Freeze/thaw action Changes in water table Depositional environment Peat Pollen types associated with climate
Tracking data The volumes of raw / processed data require careful management Deliverables include GIS projects IHS Kingdom / CODA projects detailed spreadsheets of information Scopes of work identify and define available and useable datasets deliverables lists data formats Information and data is tracked through spreadsheets / data bases GIS / meta data Kingdom database
Data and Information Management In Conclusion However, Control of data and Information often equal power Sharing is more powerful
