Padmanabhan, former Director, IIT Kanpur. In his talk, Dr. Padmanabhan took the audience through a fascinating journey of material properties and their behaviours in extreme conditions, both at macro and nano scales, and their useful applications in the modern world. Dr. Padmanabhan finally made an attempt to connect these concepts to problems in earth sciences, specifically plate boundary problems and earthquake faulting mechanism which could be considered for modeling both the seismic deformation and the aseismic creep in a plate boundary zone. The talk was followed by presentation of mementoes to staff members completing 25 years of service in CSIR and awards to winners of Quiz and essay writing competitions. Prior to the talk, Dr. Y.J. Bhaskar Rao, Acting Director addressed the gathering and briefed the success stories of NGRI during the last year. Dr. Purnachandra Rao, Scientist proposed vote of thanks. Visit of Prof. Y.T. Lee, Nobel Laureate and interaction with children July 9, 2010 was indeed a momentous day for the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI-CSIR), Hyderabad, when it had the rare opportunity of hosting Prof. Y.T. Lee, a Nobel Laureate in chemistry. Addressing a large gathering of scientists and staff of NGRI and about 60 bright school children from different schools in the twin cities, Prof. Lee delivered a fascinating lecture entitled My Personal Experiences of Being a Scientist. The talk was very inspirational with a clear message to the students and budding young researchers. At the same time, his narration was quite lively as it included interesting anecdotes punctuating his profound and thought provoking analysis of many issues pertinent to the present education system, the societal expectations of scientists and the challenge of staying focused and creative in one s scientific pursuit. After his scintillating lecture, Prof. Lee responded to a wide range of questions from school children, some very simple and innocent and some quite serious and thought provoking. The questions reflected the deep curiosity of young minds even as they were overwhelmed by their proximity to a Nobel Laureate, but charmed by his utter simplicity, warmth and the cheerful conduct. The questions ranged from a career in basic sciences, the prevailing education system, globalization of education, to many issues that are generally deemed non-scientific such as faith in God. His very inspiring lecture and answers to the questions would be fondly remembered and cherished by one and all for a long time. This program was sponsored by DST, New Delhi through INSPIRE program. 158 CSIR - NGRI

6 IMPORTANT EVENTS Golden Jubilee & New Year Lecture The first Golden Jubilee and New Year lecture on Glimpses of Materials History was delivered by Padma Vibhushan Prof. P.Rama Rao, Former Secretary, DST, New Delhi subtly underlining the ancient heritage of India in extracting and utilizing the Earth resources. Over the last 110 years, 40 Nobel Prizes have been awarded for material related experiments. Prof. Rama Rao highlighted several important areas in this field of science where there are ample and urgent needs for research, which can be done from considerations of fundamental principles, not necessarily involving huge expenditures. He encouraged Earth scientists to devote some consideration to properties of Earth materials, specially the field of energy related materials, wherein nanotechnology may have a key role to play. As population and consequently material consumption soars, development of eco-informed materials is the only way forward. His lecture once again emphasized the underlying one-ness behind all branches of science. The lecture was followed by the release of the special NGRI Golden Jubilee Calendar to commemorate the celebrations. A first day special postal cover was released by the Chief Superintendent of Post Offices in the presence of Sri. K.R. Bala Krishna, A.O., NGRI at the Jamai Osmania Post office. Golden Jubilee Inaugural Function Completion of 50 years of service to science and the society is an important milestone for any organisation. CSIR-NGRI entered its golden jubilee year on October 11, 2010.A formal golden jubilee inaugural function held on 17 th Jan, 2011 was graced by the Director General, CSIR, Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari, former Directors of NGRI as well as representatives of different industries that have been stakeholders of research at the Institute. The presence of esteemed former Directors, Dr. Hari Narain, Dr. Guptasarma, Dr. H.K. Gupta, Dr. D.C. Mishra and Dr. V.P. Dimri and their recapitulation of events during their tenures provided a glimpse into the tribulations and triumphs of the past, while an overview of the current research programs by the Acting Director, Dr. Y.J. Bhaskara Rao highlighted the current capabilities and core competence at NGRI. Dr. T.R.K. Chetty described the Institute s plans for the jubilee celebrations of NGRI. It was indeed a touching moment for the NGRI family to listen to Prof. Hari Narain, who had steered the Institute for nearly two decades during its formative years and nurtured it through its early development stage. Prof. Narain recalled his highly inspiring interactions with Smt. Indira Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India at the inauguration of the Institute s main building in its present campus in He narrated the priorities at the inception of NGRI and a wide range of scientific programs that were initiated as well as several that could not take off. Sadly, it turns out that January 17, 2011 was the last public appearance of Prof. Narain, who passed away just after ten days after this function only as if he waited to grace this occasion. 160 CSIR - NGRI

7 IMPORTANT EVENTS The proceedings of the Inaugural function provided a rare opportunity for detailed interaction with the Head of the family, the DG, CSIR, who shared with us a variety of thoughts and plans on this occasion. In his inaugural discourse, Prof. Brahmachari acknowledged that he felt privileged to be heading the CSIR at a time when many laboratories are celebrating their Golden and Diamond Jubilees. The success of these organizations is a testimony to the vision of many pioneering scientists and technologists, such as, Prof. Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar and leaders like Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the former Prime Minister of India. In spite of the poor state of the economy during the 1950s, the investments made in creating these institutions bear out the hope and trust that they bestowed on S&T as a vehicle to convert the country s intimidating challenges into aspirations. He reiterated Prof. Hari Narain s comments that while the nation was investing in atomic research and exploration of outer space there was perhaps an even greater need to study and explore the mother Earth on which we live and thus the immense importance of institutions such as NGRI and NIO. He was unequivocal in stating that NGRI had made stupendous impact in terms of basic and applied research in Earth sciences over the last fifty years and appreciated that many contributions of the scientists of this Institute have been well received across the world. He applauded the sustained efforts of the past Directors of the Institute, with a special reference to the current incumbent. In a very interesting overview, he described that over the past half a century, the R&D in science and technology in India in general and the CSIR in particular, passed through a succession of transformations: from individual-centric science (1950s) to import substitution and self-reliance (1960s), a phase of technology denial ( s) to emphasis on IP generation where CSIR formed the backbone of high S&T development in the country. He presented Vision-2022 for CSIR that is founded on a shift in emphasis such as: Manpower intensive to knowledge intensive, Research for publication to publication from research and Investing on equipment to investing on people, to name a few. Prof. Brahmachari listed several priority technology missions of the nation as articulated by the Prime Minister, Dr. Man Mohan Singh and emphasized by the CSIR during the ensuing XII Five Year Plan. The missions, such as, self sustained energy, potable water to all, natural disaster mitigation would constitute the core challenges for NGRI over the ensuing decades. In terms of an emerging R&D policy, he emphasized on global benchmarking of our research, on the need for catalyzing innovation with industry to ensure technology development and transfers in niche areas as well as on a holistic planning to achieve end-to-end solutions. He stressed the need to nurture talent in transdisciplinary areas enabling scientific entrepreneurship, leading to open and inclusive economic development. He outlined the concept and structure of the newly established Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) as a vehicle to create the necessary talent pool for the present and future, synergizing individual s aspirations with the organization s growth and the needs of the nation. He expressed the desire that the three CSIR laboratories located at Hyderabad would work together to form a coherent Hyderabad Chapter contributing to achieving the goals of AcSIR. On the occasion of the golden jubilee, Prof. Samir K. Brahmachari, DG, CSIR inaugurated the Gas Hydrate Research Centre in the campus and dedicated it to the nation. Later, during the inaugural function, he released the following three books: Annual Report

International Workshop on Deep Scientific Drilling to Study Reservoir Triggered Earthquakes in Koyna, India An International Workshop on Deep Scientific Drilling at Koyna, India was organized by the NGRI, Hyderabad during March 21-25, international experts on major fault zone drilling investigations worldwide and 55 participants from India attended the Workshop, which was inaugurated by Dr Shailesh Nayak, Secretary to Govt. of India, Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The Workshop was sponsored by the MoES, Govt. of India and International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), Germany. Koyna is a well known site of artificial water reservoir triggered seismicity, which as an isolated zone of continued seismicity at shallow depths, provides an excellent opportunity for earthquake studies. A borehole observatory in this active zone has been under consideration, which would enable direct and continuous monitoring of an intraplate seismic zone at depth, leading to a better understanding of the mechanics of faulting, physics of reservoir triggered earthquakes, and would contribute appreciably to earthquake hazard assessment and forecasting. 166 CSIR - NGRI

13 IMPORTANT EVENTS Participants to the Workshop included seismologists and experts associated with active fault zone drilling projects worldwide such as the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) in western USA, the Chi-Chi earthquake of Taiwan, the Kobe earthquake of Japan, the Gulf of Corinth in Greece and the Latur earthquake of India. On the basis of intensive discussions among the participants and important suggestions received from experts from India and abroad, a few key areas were identified for detailed preparatory studies. Foremost among those are the needs to establish the hydrological connectivity between the reservoir and host country rock and to constrain the fine structure of the seismic zone in the area including detailed mapping of the causative faults, both of which would be critical in locating the deep borehole observatory in the region.
