1 DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR.S. GEOLOGICAL SRVEY Planktic foraminifer censs data from Sites V- and RC- Marci M. Robinson S Geological Srvey, Reston, VA Open-File Report - This report is preliminary and has not been reviewed for conformity with.s. Geological Srvey editorial standards.
2 Planktic foraminifer censs data from Sites V- and RC- Marci M. Robinson S Geological Srvey, Reston, VA Introdction The S Geological Srvey is condcting a long-term stdy of paleoclimatic and paleooceanographic conditions. One of the major elements of the stdy involves the se of qantitative compostions of planktic foraminifer assemblages in conjnction with stable isotope analysis of planktic and benthic foraminifers to estimate sea-srface temperatres and identify major oceanographic bondaries and water masses. The raw censs data is available in a series of open-file reports that provide basic data for ftre work. In this report, conting categories and raw censs data for planktic foraminifer assemblages in samples from VI- and RC- are presented (Fig. ). A variety of statistical techniqes is being developed to transform censs data of foraminifers in deep-sea cores into qantitative estimates of sea-srface temperatres. Details of statistical techniqes, details of taxonomic gropings and oceanographic interpretations are presented in more formal pblications (Dowsett and Poore,,; Dowsett, ; Dowsettet al,, ). Latitde, longitde and water depth in meters for each locality are shown in Table. Conts of variables tablated in each sample are given in Tables and. These data and this report are available throgh the SGS Global Change and Climate History Program Global Change Database. se anonymos FTP to geochange.er.sgs.gov. Table. Localities discssed in text. Site Latitde Longitde Depth V- RC- V-.S.E m RC-.S.E m Methods Figre. Location of Sites VI- and RC-. The samples stdied were washed sing low temperatre (isotope) procedres. Sediment samples were dried in an oven at < C. The dried blk sample was
3 disaggregated in a beaker with warm tap water and ~ml of dilte calgon soltion' (g calgon to L water). The beaker was agitated on a shaker/hot plate withot heating. Samples were then washed throgh a Jim sieve sing a fine spray hose and dried in an oven at < C. A split of - planktic foraminifer specimens was soght from the > im size fraction sing a Carpco sample microsplitter. Specimens were identified, sorted and gled to a sqare micropaleontological slide. Conting Categories Taxa inclded in conting categories and sed for headings of Tables and are smmarized below. In general, taxonomic concepts follow Parker (, ) and Blow (). Exceptions to their practices are noted.
