The main body of a WV SIGMET message consists of: 1. the ICAO location indicator of the ATS unit serving the FIR to which the SIGMET refers and the name of the FIR; 2. the Name and location of the volcano and/or an indicator for VA cloud; 3. Observation or Forecast information; 4. Location; 5. Vertical level and extent; 6. Movement or Expected movement; 7. Expected change in intensity; and 8. Forecast position of VA cloud at the end of the SIGMET validity period.
1. ICAO location indicator of the ATS unit serving the FIR to which the SIGMET refers and Name of the FIR e.g. RPHI Manila FIR
2. Name and location of volcano and/or an indicator for VA cloud (1) If the erupting volcano is known and named: [VA ERUPTION] [MT] [nnnnnnnnnn] [PSN Nnn[nn] or Snn[nn] Ennn[nn] or Wnnn[nn]] VA CLD e.g. VA ERUPTION MT BULUSAN PSN N1246 E12403 VA CLD (2) If the location of the eruption is known but un named: VA ERUPTION PSN <lat, lon> VA CLD e.g. VA ERUPTION PSN N5403 E15927 VA CLD (3) If the source of the volcanic ash is uncertain: VA CLD VA : Glossary volcanic MT : mountain PSN : position CLD : cloud
3. Observation or Forecast information OBS AT GGggZ e.g. OBS AT 1850Z FCST AT GGggZ e.g. FCST AT 0530Z OBS : observed FCST : forecast The observation time is based on the source of the observation (satellite image, special air-report, report from a volcano observing station, etc.)
4. Location Notes Main Body (WV SIGMET) (1) An area of the FIR defined by a polygon. WI <N or E or S or W>nn[nn] <N or E or S or W>nn[nn] <N or E or S or W>nn[nn] e.g. WI N6030 E02030 N6500 E02300 N5900 E02600 N6030 E02030 The end point should be a repeat of the start point to explicitly close the polygon. (REGIONAL SIGMET GUIDE) The points of a polygon '... should be kept to a minimum and should not normally exceed seven'. (ICAO ANNEX 3) The points of a polygon are provided in a 'clockwise' sense. This assists automated systems in determining the 'inside' of polygons. (REGIONAL SIGMET GUIDE) WI : within 1 WI... 2 FIR Hexagon is a polygon which has maximum coordinates
4. Location (2) Covering the entire FIR (permitted only for volcanic ash): ENTIRE FIR ENTIRE FIR (3) An area describing a zone defined by a line of a specified width (rather than a polygon): see the 'Vertical level and extent' section that follows. FIR
