2 Date of programme specification/revision March 2018 Programme Overview Understanding the Earth and how its interior, surface and atmosphere interact are the fundamentals of the degree course. Geologists and Geophysicists understand the Earth and other planets through observation and data collection, and make inferences based on understanding of fundamental scientific principles. The course is designed to provide students with the interdisciplinary skills in physics, maths, chemistry, engineering and the geosciences to provide an understanding of this challenge and the possible solutions. A coherent and balanced approach to learning in the first two years will enable students to have time to explore the subject, develop their self-organised study and allow for more self-directed learning as the degree progresses, with the fourth year involving a specific programme focussed towards the Petroleum sector. Classroom teaching will be enhanced by fieldwork throughout the degree as students develop their oral, written and observational skills. Learning Outcomes By the end of this programme, MSc students will be able to: Demonstrate mastery of the terminology of petroleum geology, geophysics, geochemistry and engineering. Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the principal characteristics of the interior, surface, atmosphere and biosphere of the Earth, their histories, and the physical, chemical and geological processes that explain these characteristics. Explain accurately the methods used to make observations about the surface, interior and climate of the Earth, and be able to report and explain the principal results produced by these methods. Demonstrate confidence and accuracy in identifying important rocks, minerals and structures in hand specimens, in outcrop, and under the microscope. Demonstrate the skills necessary to plan, conduct and report an independent programme of geological fieldwork, and apply geological principles to the solution of problems in the field. Describe and explain how major earth resources are generated, their global distribution and characteristics, and the methods that can be used for their discovery and exploitation. Apply the principal techniques and theories of mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and computer programming required across geoscience. Demonstrate advanced skills in petroleum geoscience technical disciplines including basin analysis, sequence stratigraphy, reservoir geology, petroleum geophysics, petrophysics and reservoir engineering. Apply modern petroleum-industry workflows and industry-standard software for seismic interpretation, basin modelling, petrophysics, structural restoration and reservoir modelling. Apply best industry work practice, working effectively both independently and as a member of an integrated multi-disciplinary team in the exploration, appraisal, development and production of oil and gas resources. Conceive, design, execute, critique, revise, document and present an original research project. Understand and synthesise original scientific literature extending into active research areas at the boundaries of the subject.

4 Assessment Strategy Assessment Methods Academic Feedback Policy Written Examinations Practical Examinations Coursework Lab & Fieldwork Reports Oral Examinations Presentations Research & project dissertations Group project Feedback is provided throughout the programme. It is provided during practical and problem classes, in workshops, in tutorials, during field work, and in response to assessed and unassessed coursework. During fieldwork, feedback is provided throughout the working day. Written feedback on coursework will normally be provided within two weeks of submission. Feedback will normally be individual on assessed coursework and project work, and will normally be generic on unassessed coursework, provided verbally or in writing, typically during the next teaching session or delivered on-line. Feedback on major projects will normally be provided within five weeks in term time. Generic feedback is provided on examinations; where appropriate, individuals can be given supervised access to their exam scripts. Re-sit Policy At the discretion of the examiners, supplementary qualifying tests (SQT) may be offered to candidates whose performance is marginally unsatisfactory, in not more than 15 ECTS in total. The performance required to pass an SQT is determined by the examiners having regard to the nature of the SQT; the required level will not be less than the original pass mark, and may be set at a higher level. Supplementary qualifying tests are normally examined by written papers, or by re-submission of relevant project reports or coursework, and may include an additional oral examination; they may be used to examine the whole of a module, or where the examiners deem it appropriate, one or more constituent assessments. SQTs may be held at any appropriate time, but are normally held in September ahead of the start of the next session. Supplementary qualifying tests do not constitute re-examination; rather, they provide a means by which a marginally unsuccessful candidate, who is otherwise qualified to proceed, may improve their preparedness and demonstrate their fitness to proceed successfully. Candidates whose performance in SQTs is found to be satisfactory by the examiners, will be deemed to have passed the appropriate module, and, subject to satisfactory performance in all other modules, will be deemed to have passed the year, and may proceed to the following year of the programme without penalty. Where a supplementary qualifying test has been applied to a candidate, final marks appearing on transcripts and used in calculating final year and degree totals, shall be those derived following the SQT, such marks shall normally be capped to the original pass mark for the module or constituent assessment that has been tested. Candidates who are invited to re-attend and repeat the year must normally be re-examined and reassessed in all modules of the year including any that were nominally previously passed; marks are not capped during a repeated year. Repeating candidates will normally be transferred onto the BSc

5 programme; they may only proceed onto the MSci programme with the special agreement of the examiners. Candidates who fail the year, and who are not invited to re-attend and repeat the year, may retake examinations and be re-assessed in those modules that they have previously failed. Such re-assessment should normally happen at the first available opportunity. Excluding any Supplementary Qualifying Tests that may be offered, re-assessment in any module is allowed once only. Year Two Candidates must achieve an aggregate mark of at least 60 for the year, and must have earned at least 60 ECTS credits for the year. Year Three Candidates must achieve an aggregate mark of at least 40 for the year, must have earned at least 60 ECTS credits for the year, and must have earned at least 60 credits at level 6 or higher throughout the programme. Year Four Candidates must achieve an aggregate mark of at least 40 for the year, must have earned at least 60 ECTS credits for the year, and must have earned at least 60 credits at level 7 throughout the

Final Degree Classifications Third a student must achieve an aggregate mark of 40 Lower Second a student must achieve an aggregate mark of 50 Upper Second a student must achieve an aggregate mark of 60 First - a student must achieve an aggregate mark of 70 Marking Scheme All examinations are anonymous, and are double marked; marks may be subject to moderation by the Board of Examiners. All marking takes place against the predetermined marking criteria. All other items, including projects and coursework items are not anonymous; those worth over 30 of the module are open-double marked; those worth less than 30 are check-marked. Independent Geology projects are blind double marked, and students have an oral defence before internal moderation by the module coordinator. Independent Earth Science and Geophysics projects are blind double marked before internal moderation by the module coordinator. MSci projects are not anonymous; marking, commended as good practice by our External Examiners and by the Faculty of Engineering Teaching Committee as follows: Both students and supervisors provide comments on the level of supervision received / provided to the independent markers. All reports will be marked by two independent markers, who will normally mark several dissertations. Experienced, and less experienced markers will work together. In addition, the dissertations will also be marked by the project supervisors. Once the dissertation marking is completed, the two independent markers hold an oral defence with the student and the final MSci Project mark are determined, based on the following weighing: - Dissertation marks of the two independent markers: 2 x 35 = 70 - Dissertation mark of the supervisor: 15 - Mark given for the viva: 15 For discrepancies of 5 or more between two markers, a discussion will be held to agree on appropriate final marks. Internal moderation takes place to ensure that the scale, range and standards of marking are appropriate. The Chair of the Board of Examiners and the Module Coordinator will ensure consistency of marking, agreeing and implementing the recommendations and investigating any anomalies identified. Where an issue has been identified during internal moderation, a further review of marks may be required. This may require further marking of the entire assessment, of a single section of the assessment, or assessment within a particular mark range. It is expected that all assessments displaying the same general issue will be remarked.
