Explore and classify soils to current codes of practice. Analyse soil properties determined by geotechnical procedures. Topic: Susceptibility to weathering and weathering processes Launch Assessment 1 topics: Goldrich s weathering series, physical, chemical and biological weathering processes. Topic: Discontinuous nature of rock mass topics: rock discontinuities and the causes, formation processes, folding and faulting and the problems this causes for civil engineers and how these are overcome. Topic: Formation and uses of un-cemented sediments within civil engineering topics: denudation, erosion, deposition and sedimentation. Topic: Rock and un-cemented sediments uses within civil engineering In groups, students are to prepare a short presentation on one of the following topics: uses of different rock types, quarrying and aggregate production, uses of clay, gravel and sand within civil engineering. Topic: Field Study Trip Students to visit a geotechnical engineering site laboratory to discuss, and observe, ground and site investigation methods and techniques. Topic: Ground and site investigation, soil sampling, soil description Students to visit a geotechnical engineering site laboratory to discuss, and observe, soil sampling and soil description methods to current codes of practice. 4
